Hi guys,

I've been working on this build for a couple of months now. This is my 3rd Water Cooling project and my most ambitious yet. This PC is being built for gaming @ 4K resolution and to satisfy my crave for water cooling . A lot of research went into it. I was going to wait for X99 but then decided against it since DDR4 will be in its first interation and it's about a year away (more by the time bugs are worked out and water blocks are out). Wife let me go all out since we will start trying to have a baby and I will not be able to build for @ least 2 years. She is awesome like that.

Decided to start the build log even though I do not have all the parts yet (missing motherboard, GPUs and respective water blocks ).

Here is a list of components:

  -  Mountain Mods Extended U2-UFO ($600) case - picked this case for the space and the horizontal motherboard brace (this was a MUST for me!). Love the Anodized black finish and I added elements with 3M Di-Noc black Carbon Fiber.

Options:

  - Window Etching: None
  - Side 3: Acrylic Panels
  - Side 2: Acrylic Panels
  - Side 1: Acrylic Panels
  - Motherboard Tray: XL-ATX
  - Horizontal MB brace: Yes
  - Front Panel Type: Duality
  - Acrylic Color: Smoked Grey
  - Back Panel Fan Spacing: 15mm
  - Back Panel Type: 10PCI-2PSU
  - Finish: Anodize Black
  - Front Panel Fan Spacing: 15mm

  -  Asus Rampage IV Black Edition Motherboard- pre-ordered from Newegg for $500 (11/19 estimated shipping). Wife chose this one. She said it looked more complex...LOL . Have not decided on the WC block for the MOBO yet. They should start appearing in December.

  -  Corsair AX1200i Power Supply x 2 - Initially was going for the Enermax Max Revo 1500w. Decided to go with the 2 Corsairs instead  due to the individually sleeved cables, power draw for 4 GPUs and cable management. It was all on sale after all ($ 230 per PSU after $30 rebate and $80 per uni-sleeved cables kit. Time saved not individually sleeving cables- PRICELESS!).

  -  Intel i7 4960X Extreme - procured new on eBay for $850. WC blocks between XSPC Raystorm, Bitspower Summit EF Black Ice or Swiftech Apogee HD. Have all 3 in hand. Fell free to contribute to the decision process on which of the 3 should I use and why.

  -  G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 64 GB 2400 - got them with a small discount through Newegg for $ 695. The only 64GB kit on the Rampage IV Black Edition QVL so far. Worked extremely well on the RIVE. Will WC the RAM with the XSPC RAM block. Will either use the XSPC or Bitspower Acrylic top. The determining factor is purely aesthetic. (The XSPC is copper colored with clear acrylic top and the Bitspower is nickel colored with black acrylic top). I have both tops so feel free to chime in .

  -  EVGA GTX Titan Superclocked Signature Edition x 4 - Found it locally and ended up getting 4 for an average of $700 each. They look exactly like new with all accessories included. I was going to wait got the 780Ti Classified Hydro Copper but Jacob confirmed no 6GB VRAM ... so, will keep Titans until fully enabled Maxwell is out. That's the only upgrade I'll do in the far future (My wife will not be happy if I go nuts like this again. I don't like the beatings.... Just kidding, but we have full disclosure about everything and she was cool to be on board with that. She's so awesome ). Found 4 Hydro Copper blocks (i like how they look and one can never have too much EVGA! ). Modding the LEDs on the blocks from red to white to go with the EVGA PRO bridge and case theme. Got 4 back plates from direct from EVGA.

  -  ICY DOCK TOUGHARMOR 5.25 Aluminum Bay Drive ($65) - perfect solution for this case. Fit a slim Blu-ray and 2 SSDs.

  -  Panasonic UJ-267 Slot Load Blu-ray Writer ($119) - Thanks eBay!

  -  Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD x2 ($400 ea.)- eBay strikes again ! Will set them up in RAID 0 and picked up a WD My Passport Ultra for back up.

Got all at Performance PCs. They are awesome. This one set me back over 3K (got a coupon for 8% off that basically saved me the tax since I am in FL). Still cheaper than Frozen CPU... The guys at PPCs are pretty awesome. They've helped me out a lot (specially with all my wrong item orders ). I wouldn't be able to finish this project if it wasn't for them.

Now to the actual build with PICs and everything...

Re: MM Black Carbon - Extreme WC Mountain Mods U2-Extended UFO 4K Build Log 2013/11/14 00:34:40 (permalink)
Well, let's start with the case.

First I was not happy with the size of the casters that came with the case, so I decided to mod it to install some 4 inch industrial casters (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EE7DOP8/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

Since the caster bases were silver, decided to use my trusty Plasti Dip (learned to use it due to my hate for chrome, which was one of the "features" of my truck ) to make it flat black and stay with the theme:

All covered to be "dipped",next to the puny original casters, huahahahahaha:

    After the "dip":

    All done!

Drilled new holes for the new casters and covered the interior in Di-Noc:

Several case parts before and after the CF treatment:

    Assembling case:

New casters, drive bays and sleeved&soldered Power and Reset buttons installed:

Note that I made a big effort to get all black screws, cover pieces in CF and sleeve cables in black.

NZXT Hue get the CF treatment. Initially, I got 2 to cover the whole case. After modding the 2nd LED strip with some staples inside the holes at the end of the strip, I was able to connect the 2 strips and use only one of the bays (sorry, i didn't remember to take pictures of the mod):

Now it's time for the Panasonic slot Blu-ray and ICY DOCK:

EVGA Pro SLi bridges turn (I wasn't sure if I was going 3 or 4 way at the time so I did both ):

Koolance digital pump controller before and after:

    Time to mod the PSUs!

Got some goodies. Time to go to work!

Installing the blocks on all 8 of the RAM modules :

Working on the 15 fans :

Flushing the Monsta Rads with distilled water and 10% vinegar...fun times...

(I installed the different Alphacool stickers, I liked these better on he RADs).

    Airboxes installed:

Installed on the case and some cable management done. The second Rad will go on top with an identical setup:

Frontal shot with the bottom Rad installed with the grill cover. Unfortunately, two of these one did not fit properly:

Koolance dual reservoir with dual 450 pumps installed in series:

Installed the flow and temp meters before the quick disconnects:

    White LEDs installed:

Both RADs flushed and ready to be mounted on the case:

Primochill Hex Grillz for the inside of the case:

Mounted on the case with the Swiftech PWM board and cables routed in between the Monstas :

Installed baby Monsta in the back:

Installed PSUs, did some cable management and initial loop routing :

Last shot with the new grills from MNPC. Bill and his guys do awesome work. This rad grills are sick !

It's been a lot of work but I am pleased with progress so far. All components have quick disconnects and I was able to put the drain valve that you can see in the PIC above. Will take some pics of it in action after the leak test! Let me know what you guys think and I'll update as soon as I get more parts. Have a good one.

Mighty impressive bud. That will be one heck of a rig when done.

Just playing with ya but that last pic looks some what like a massive ghetto blaster from the 80's, on wheels no less.

Great job, look forward to the mobo release next week to finish that rig off, gonna be a beast for sure.

    so much radiators!!!!!!!

That's one of the reasons I didn't go with the Ascension case. Besides the look, there would've been 2 more 360 radiators.

Received the Titan back plates today.

    Thanks EVGA .

Still waiting for the HC blocks. I am guessing one would install the WC block before the back plate, yes?

That's looking great... Just finished my 4 titan 4960x build. It was a lot of fun to make. I didn't do any real case mods though. Next time!
I do like the cubes though and plan on going that route when I build my next one. I wish someone would buy mine for cost so I could build a new one. But it was about 13k
so I don't see that happening.. haha

Good luck  and keep posting pics

All right. I got the board and installed everything on air (PICS coming soon!). Ran Memtest86+ with all 64 gigs@ 1333 and 2400 and it all worked great. All 4 Titans are working even in 4 Way. Installed Windows 8.1  with all updates and then the bad news started...

Started getting random shutdown/restarts both on Windows and outside of it. Nothing was OC'ed or overheating. Turned off the fast booting on windows under power options, removed all RAM sticks but one and left only one GPU in and it was still happening. My first instinct was that one of the the PSUs was crapping out (it wouldn't be the first time that a brand new AX1200i caused problems) or the Motherboard. Checked the Event log in Windows and got nothing. The board is going back to Newegg and I'll replace the Corsair PSUs with something else. If any of you guys have any ideas on what this issue could be, please let me know.

Another question besides the above question guys, what color coolant should I use? I am between very dark blue or white. Let me know which one you would pick or another color entirely. Thanks.

Will do! Will definitely upgrade when Nvidia releases something with 6GB VRAM or more.

    Update time :

Some pics of the Rampage IV Black Edition Board:

A little MOD to the Ceton InfiniTV 6:

Routing the fan cables underneath the motherboard:

CPU, RAM and Titans ready to go for tests on air:

    Fired up :

I was able to Memtest all 8 RAM sticks @ 1333 and 2400 and made a pass with no problems. Installed/updated Windows 8.1 and Nvidia drivers. All 4 GPUs recognized individually and in 4 Way SLi. For whatever reason the Motherboard was not properly recognizing the CPU Fan and CPU Opt Fan and was running them at full speed no matter what.

Everything else was going great until I started getting random shutdown/reboots. Unchecked Fast Boot, put power button to shutdown and changed power profile to high performance in Power Button/Options. Checked Windows Event Log and got nothing. Removed 3 GPUs and all sticks of RAM but one and was still getting random shutdown/reboots.

Came to the conclusion the it was either the AX1200i PSUs or the Motherboard or a combination of both. Decided to send the Motherboard back to Newegg for a replacement and decided on giving a chance to 2 EVGA NEX1500 Classified after reading several of the mixed reviews of the latest.

The way I see it, for example, Johny Guru loves the AX1200i and does not care for the Nex1500. My personal experience with the AX1200i is that they are crap with a barrage of weird issues (I replaced the TPG-1200 with the AX1200i and after trying everything to make it work, returned the TPG=1200 to my previous rig and sent the AX1200i back to Amazon). Gave Corsair a second chance, and now I am done with it.

Initially I was between the AX1200i and the NEX1500 (My OCD would not allow me to get any of the Enermax/Lepa PSUs because of the way they setup their cabling. I could not do multi colored wires hanging out from the short sleeving and the multi connector cables) The one thing that kept me from getting the NEX1500 to begin with were the hideous handles. Since removing them was not an option (I don't want to void the warranty which is one of the best features of this PSU), I found an "acceptable" solution, cover them with 3M Carbon Fiber Di-Noc!

Well, since the Rampage IV is not back, I'll probably install the Hydro Copper blocks with the modded LEDs in the Titans next.
