Hey all,

I wasn't sure where to post this but as the title says Precision always shows my 980 SC's clock speed as 1240 when sitting idle. It moves when under load to 1376 but sitting idle shows 1240. I don't overvolt, have no profiles selected, do not have K-boost on, nor have I changed the power target.

In Nvidia's control panel I have the card set top adaptive power. I'm running Precision 5.33 but also tried 2 older versions and all show the same thing.
Lastly, I've tried several different drivers and am currently running 347.25

If you have any suggestions I'm glad to hear them.

What's the resolution of your monitor, the hz it runs at and how many do you run?

It's a 2k monitor running at 144mhz. I just have the 1 monitor.

running at 144 on the desktop?  If so, turn it down to 60 and see if that fixes it.

ROG Swift?

Could uninstall Precision X and run GPUz and see what the cards are running at so you can count out Precision X being the problem or use another monitor so see if it downclocks that way.

I uninstalled Precision X, tried MSI afterburner and same results. IDK about GPUZ, I can try it and see though.

You do know that 144Hz at desktop WILL make the GPU not downclock... I know that you said it wasn't at 60Hz either, but when you fix this it won't downclock at 144Hz either. Sounds like a program is keeping the GPU from downclocking.

No, I didn't know 144hz will make the gpu not downclock. Why is that anyway? I'm not arguing the point, just curious since I have not heard that before.
As far as a program keeping the gpu from down clocking, it wasn't doing this last week and I haven't added any programs. The only thing I've changed is doing a Win 8.1 update. What type of programs would cause this?

No, I don't have anything like that installed as far as I know just the Precision that's set to default.

It needs extra juice to run at 144 hz at 2k even at idle to push those pixels at that speed is why it won't downclock but it usually doesn't push it full throttle like yours is doing just doesn't let it go the lowest clock speed.

I would run antivirus software and malwarebytes, check to see what programs are running during idle and close those not needed for the OS to work one by one to see if it is one of them causing it, uninstall the card drivers completely and make sure Precision X and Afterburner are uninstalled entirely then reinstall GPU drivers to do pretty much everything you can to find out the problem and if none of that does anything call EVGA and they'll help or RMA your card.

Hey

I had the same issue with my swift and titan x. Using 120hz on desktop got rid of this issue. Try that and i hipe it works out for you.

So yeah, I switched to 120hz and left the system idle and it did down clock. I guess I must have had it at 120hz previously and have been gaming at 144hz the last week. Thank you everybody, I'm glad it's fixed with your suggestions and helpful ideas.

Just an update. I also noticed that when Origin is running the gpu never down clocks even when I'm not in game. I don't know if I find that interesting or disturbing but there you go.
