Not sure if anyone has looked at it this way. When the GTX 670 and 680 came out, there was a $100 price difference. GTX 680 was $499 and GTX 670 was $399. Probably was not worth going SLI 670's because of being $200 more than a 680. However, having a computer which is SLI capable; with the price difference between the 970 ($330) and the 980 ($550), it may be a very hard decision. Two vanilla 970's would come out to roughly ~$660 and vanilla GTX 980 is $550. The 980 classified is probably going to be slightly cheaper than two 970's (let's assume $630 for the classified 980) I cannot see the price of the 970 dropping much lower than it is now, even years down the line, however I could be wrong. The price is already pretty low. What does the decision ultimately boil down to? How would you choose? Person A: "I will get a 980 and be done with it". Person B: "I'll get a 980 now and when the price comes down later on, I will get another SLI them" Person C: "I will just get two 970's now" Person D: has another plan all-together. ex. I will wait for a Ti version, or something similar... Which person are you and why?

Damn why do you have to fuel the fire!! That's exactly what I'm thinking of doing. I would love to get one 980... but I just don't see how it's worth it. I'm currently running an X79 chipset with a 4930k. If the 980 was $450, It would be a harder decision. But to me it seems like a no brainer to get two 970's. On x79, I assume most boards PCI-E are 16x/16x/8x?

Person A: "I will get a 980 and be done with it". I've done SLI the last 4 years (2 pairs) and to be honest i'm just over dealing with profiles, added heat/power consumption, SOME games not supporting it, and even the minor nuisance of having to re-enable SLI after every driver update lol. (Sometimes i forget and find myself really irritated about how my computer is performing before i realise what I did.) Most of the games I've played in the last year using a pair of EVGA 670 FTW's I have only been able to get a increase of around 10 fps when enabling SLI and it's probably just the games im playing, but either way i'm just GOING BIG. Can always fall back on Person B: "I'll get a 980 now and when the price comes down later on, I will get another SLI them" Last thing i need is 3 GPU's heating my office space.

Techpower has a review at higher resolutions the gtx 970s scales even better than a r9 295 x2 but in lower resolutions the 980 makes more sense.

The 980 is better than the 970 in every benchmark on that review. I think you got your numbers mixed up in your post.

I think he meant in SLI GTX 970 are faster than single GTX 980.

Bump. These are all good questions. I've thought a lot about these same issues myself. Video cards are a big investment for some of us. I'm on the fence about it, but I personally think that I would go for the first choice. I've got an 850 watt PSU, so I probably won't SLI anything, and I only game at 1920 x 1080 resolution. But you're right; there is an unusually big difference in price between the 970 and the 980. I think I'm still going to wait a few more months before I make a decision. As I said, video cards are an investment, and I haven't bought one since May, 2010, when I bought my 480 SC. Champagne taste on a beer budget, and all that.

Before the prices were revealed, I only had my eyes set on the 980. But after seeing the prices, I am going to go 970 FTW SLI. It's just a little more than a 980 and will perform much better. Plus I will most likely do Tri-SLI after a bit and it will still be cheaper than 980 SLI. Now I'm just waiting on the 970 FTWs to be released.
