my previous card was a R9 290, at the moment the Phsyx i have offloaded to my CPU(5960x) with has great benefit to my bench scores better than running Phsyx from the 1080.

but i would rather have another option for Phsyx, the R9 is still attached to my mobo but i gain greatly in the ashes bench with it in their

Ahh. Yeah, that won't work for the R9 290. Just remember that the PhysX card will only work with games that either A) use cuda or B) use actual PhysX. Other than those 2 options, your card will basically sit in your computer just eating up power from your PSU. If you're really wanting to do this, I would try and get a 1050, or a 960 at reduced price.

will do, pwr isn't a problem it's just being able to get benefit from spending £100 on a dedicated card for Phsyx, i'm having to ask myself if its going to be really worth the time, effort and cost to do so

Also remember that getting a Physx card has more of a benefit for folks running SLI over those with just a single main GPU.

There is a benefit for using a dedicated Physx card with one GPU, it just isn't all that big when you consider the lack of titles that can use it - https://en.m.wikipedia.or...elerated_PhysX_support

i don't think i am going to benefit then, judging by that list i'm just going to have to save some more pennies for another 1080 for Sli  :(  time to clear out my piles of old GFX cards in the cupboard :(

i suppose my next question would be, can a 1080 and a 1070 be used for SLi? or is that going to be more hassle than it's worth due the diff clocks and memory type?

No, they have to be the same GPU. 1080 with a 1080, or a 1070 with a 1070.
