I currently have a 650w power supply which powers an over clocked 4690k and a gtx 970ftw. I also have an h100i cooling my CPU, 16gb ram with an sdd and hard drive. My question is would 650w be enough to add another 970ftw or would I have to buy another psu?

It will not be enough sorry. For an overclocked gtx 970 SLI setup, 800-850w is the minimum.

Thanks for reply. I thought these cards would use less power, because that's about the PSU for 770sli and thought these would be less because if Maxwell

Actually I think 650 W would be enough because one 970 FTW uses 170W and plus maybe 80w for the i5 and other components maybe 100W makes about 520 watt and there is still ca 130W headroom and if you have a bronze or better psu I'm pretty sure that it is enough and even if you dont have i think its enough. In my system i run a 3770 16 gigabyte ram and 2x GTX 560 (each 150W) with a 630W bronze psu and everything works fine.

An overlocked gtx 970 can use more watts than a gtx 980.

"Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:
    • GeForce GTX 970 or 980 in 2-way SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have an 700~800 Watt power supply unit as minimum.
If you are going to overclock your GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.
What would happen if your PSU can't cope with the load:
    • Bad 3D performance
    • Crashing games
    • Spontaneous reset or imminent shutdown of the PC
    • Freezing during gameplay
    • PSU overload can cause it to break down

Yeah may as well not risk it thanks. Any one know of a good deal on a 750w modular power supply?

I would go with 850watt, especially if you plan on overclocking

1300W is way overkill for 2x970's or even 3x970's.  He will be fine with a 750W or 850W.  He could even get away with that 650W, but without overclocking anything.  GTX 970 has only ~160W TDP.  Its not a 250W TDP card.

I know it's overkill but it's only $50 more than that 850 and it has a 42% higher capacity. It's also 80+ gold rated and has excellent ripple suppression from my experience with it.
It's just a suggestion though, up to the OP if they wan't to get it. (Smokin' deal too, I paid $185 USD for mine).

Definitely upgrade the power supply. Running one at near its maximum draw increases the likelihood of a failure.

First of all what kind of 650W unit is it? If it is a gold rated unit, brand? If it is anything hardware wise like a Seasonic X650 with 54A on the 12v you won't have any issues.

    1. Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 326 Watts

If you consider overclocking I would say 400W max for 2 970 FTWs, then again this does not translate to power usage in games instead just heavy benchmarks. 4690k uses somewhere between 100-180 watts depending on overclock or needing ~11 amps at max for the CPU, ~33 amps for the GPUs. Then again during gaming I also find it hard that a 4690k would use that much power in today's games.

If your PSU isn't like something I mentioned above you would probably be best with a 750W like this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438017&cm_re=evga_750w_psu-_-17-438-017-_-Product

Can absolutely recommend a Supernova as well. To save a bit of money you could craigslist your unit and shop around for a Supernova 750/850.

I went a wee bit overkill for my 970 FTW setup (soon SLI and then TRI-SLI) and have an eVGA 1600 G2. I think I should be good.

But yeah, I would recommend something bigger than a 650W. I had a cheap 600W back in the day with a single 280. I then upgraded to SLI 280s and my PSU handled it for a few months, but soon died. And it was only like a year old. Learned my lesson and got a Corsair 1000W after that.

Just a wee bit overkill. If I remember correctly Jayz2Cents has one in Skunkworks with tri 780s, overvolted with the 5960X on an overclock and at full load he was only pulling about 700 watts from the wall.

I kind just skipped down to the comment portion of the sight, so forgive me if i re-post what is already said. I have a wattage meter, and running 2x 670's in SLI with an overclocked 3570K@4.4Ghgz with 3 SSD's and 2 Western Digital Veloci Raptors, dvd burner, sound card, 4 sticks of DDR3 1600Mhz Ram,  and 4 120mm fans, I have NEVER seen my computer peak over 615-watts....ever! I can't imagine 2x 970's being that much different...... A 750-800watt PSU is way more then enough for a 2 card SLI setup :)

Interesting. I'm beginning to think "sli ready" huge power supplys is just a bunch of marketing to make people think they need it when in reality very few people do.

Ran two 670 FTW's on a Seasonic 750X, and currently using the same PSU for the 980s.  No issues here.

In this Video a 750W supply is enough for a 3930K with 32 Gigabyte Ram and 2 Titans. And a single Titan needs about 80W more. And as I said before in my system I run 2xGTX 560 with 16GB ram and a 3770 with a 630W bronze power supply and didn't have any issues yet. So my system is similar to your one in power usage. I would recommend you to try sli with your 650W psu (you said you spent 100$ on it so it probably is bronze certified) and if you have any issues upgrade to a better psu.

Interesting. I'm beginning to think "sli ready" huge power supplys is just a bunch of marketing to make people think they need it when in reality very few people do.

Well it really depends on the cards you buy and your system setup so it's not entirely marketing. People just want more overheard in case they upgrade but not everyone upgrades in a 1-2 year cycle for GPU's or CPUs/motherboards, and were getting more efficient as the years go by as we all have seen with the 970/980 and possibly Haswell so bigger units are only needed for certain people. Benchers, possibly scientists for some program, computing, people who want to enjoy gaming with 2-3 cards at 1.35v or so lol, etc.

The GTX 280 is nothing like this 970 as far as power goes. That card was a monster in terms of power usage and after trying SLI on a 1000W PSU I learned to avoid anything branded by Ultra lol. Back then I can understand a high wattage unit but now we see parts that are much more efficient.

I will either find a way, or make one.

I have an EVGA 750 SuperNova, and with my 2 superclocked 660s and an overclocked i5, barely drew 450w from wall. I just stepped up to twin 970s, which should only add another 50-70 watts to that.

This is a good reference page for power requirements:

A little late to this thread but it's still relevant.

I am CPU/RAM overclocked and running two GTX 470's (heavily overclocked) with a 750W PSU.  5 year old system with no power problems.

I just ordered two GTX 970's and I am going to just drop them in.  From all I have read on their power consumption I will easily free up over 150W, not to mention the hundreds of dollars a year on that reduced electric bill.

If I do not have more than enough power I will be surprised and will post back.

My Coolermaster 1000W  PSU been running for 4 years now, powered gtx 570 SLI, gtx 670 SLI  and about to power gtx 970 SC SLI. LOL I agree with some of the posts above, get a powerful good brand name one and forget about it, at least it gives me a peace of mind.

As I use a UPS by APC with digital display I can report that my overclocked 4930K with GTX 970 FTW SLI overclocked at 1530/1,275V uses about 720W in benches and during demanding games. Peripherals are 2 SSD's, 3 HDD's, Soundcard, a couple of fans, fan controller, waterpump and TV card. So I'd say around 800W is minimum, otherwise your PSU is maxed out and will get noisy and warm.
