I'm using a 23" LG monitor. The only sound that I'm using is off the motherboard which I don't have now. I'm hoping your fix will help me.

you might have to reinstall the onboard sound drivers
are your speakers powered?
did you recheck all the connections to your speakers?
and why are you using a dvi to hdmi setup?
can you go with just a dvi connection?

Hey guys...

Can this "Black Screen Issue" be described as:
- Sudden Black screen and in a few seconds PC automatically reboots at Post Sequence....no BSOD....

Very frustrating for me as I recently:
1. flashed my 759 Classy to 74 BIOS
2. swapped out my 920 for a 980X
3. swapped out my HX 1kw for a AX 1.2 kw

everything went fine...was running Driver 257.15, so clean install of 258.96...

Of course OC'ing / Bench Testing (P95)..get everything stable..then "bam"..Black screen and reboot to Post Screen (no reset required)....frustrating...

Try Driver 260.xx, select only graphics Driver and PhysX...clean install....same thing!

so I now have tried your suggestion above, disable corresponding HD audio Device and it no longer appears under "audio / sound" in Device Manager.....hope this does the trick, as if this indeed is causing the Black Screen issue, it should now be solved, if not....yikes..all kinds of troubleshooting.
Also, I had 8 nvidia HD audio devices show up in Device Manager....

btw.....never saw this Black Screen before with my HX 1 kW, 920 C1 at 3.8 Ghz and GPU Driver 257.15

^^^ Thanks..with nvhd audio disabled I'll continue to monitor....

btw...of course I read the entire Thread...it only mentions black Screen then having to "Hard / Soft Reboot" to solve....or nv display driver has stopped and now recovered....

My symptom is a little different..Black Screen and automatically reboots from the Post Screen....any tid bit of info I get helps me to eliminate potential issues after all the changes I made:
1. Is my 980X OC stable
2. Is my new AX PSU ok
3. Are my GPU's alright

etc etc etc....if indeed my Black Screen reset to Post is also a common Black Screen sequence, then I can suspect it is indeed something to do with the new GPU Drivers....

Well it fixed nothing, unfortunately. The black screen freeze at login or randomly while working on the desktop is still there. Its the same with my brand new 2nd gtx470, i tried both cards alone, both will eventually freeze at login and with both cards installed in sli its worse.

It didn't fix my black screen problems either.  I RMA'd my card a week ago and have been using my GTX 260 since then with the same drivers and have had no black screens at all.

@MilenaM and @jazzy388
did you uninstall the surround drivers and do a clean install of the new drivers? and check post 27
on this thread.. that is a better way to view the device and make sure you disabled the right one.

I did everything and more.  This may be a fix for some people but it wasn't for me.  I never had any problems with logging in or games, my black screens were always in 2d on the desktop.

tried but didn't fix:

    - drivers 197 thru 260 - uinstalled with driver sweeper
    - updated bios
    - updated motherboard, chipset, sound & monitor drivers
    - used newest versions of flash, directx
    - did complete re-install of windows 7
    - bought 2 new sticks of memory
    - used different power supply
    - used both DVI ports, black screened on both
    - tried everything on this thread i.e. disable card sound

Intel i5 750 4.0 - MSI P55-GD65 - Corsair 4GB XMS2000 - EVGA GTX 580 - Creative SB X-fi - Corsair HX620W - OCZ Solid 32G x 4 Raid0 - WD 300G black - Samsung 2233RZ - Win7 32

Please don't give me any more tips.  I know your trying to help but some problems are hardware and can't be fixed.  Besides that, I already said that I RMA'd my card a week ago.

Re:PROCEEDURE to PERMANENTLY DISABLE THE NVIDIA HD sound device(BLACK SCREEN & LOGIN FIX) 2010/09/27 18:52:10 (permalink)
Well I bought the 470 GTX and had to RMA b/c of the lockup on login.  Now I have the new card, and it seems to lock up randomly exactly as described: random black screen while doing normal stuff ex. browsing web, listening to music etc.  Works fine in games and I've even stress tested it.  Dissabled the the nvidia audio drivers like you said, we'll see how that goes.  I have to say I'm REALLY disappointed in Nvidia.  This was an upgrade computer build, in the old one I had a geforce 9600gt and never had a single problem.  The 470 has been nothing by trouble...

Question though: there a a lot of devices on the IRQ 16 including the USB hub controller and this reminded me that ocasionally, not once a week max, my wired logictech mouse will lockup and not work when coming out of sleep mode.  Unplugging it and replugging it in fixes the problem: could this be related?
Also, is there a way to change the IRQ?
Thanks!

I can disable the nv HD Audio Drivers, but even after a clean install of the latet Beta 260 Drivers I still have 8 friggin nv Audio Devices listed in my Device Manager....although they're now disabled....but..really..I like a "clean" system!

How the heck do I permanently trash these out of my Device Manager? Is their a link somewhere to Driver Cleaner that is mentioned...I do have Driver Sweeper....

@rjbarker please read post 28 and 29 it will explain it further.. you have to disable the one of the hd sound devices under the "system devices" section of device manager if you are running 2 way SLI ther will be three instance one for each card and one for the onboard audio fin the ones the are on the same pci bus as your video cards and disable them

Re:PROCEEDURE to PERMANENTLY DISABLE THE NVIDIA HD sound device(BLACK SCREEN & LOGIN FIX) 2010/09/29 10:05:32 (permalink)
^^^ Yes under Device Manager I already disabled the 2 (under System Devices) that correspond to my 2 x 480's....therefor under Sound I now only have my Realtek HD Audio showing up.....did all that fine.after installing the WHQL 258.xx. BUT...I'll repeat the question...
When I did a clean install of the new Beta 260 Driver, selected NO Audio HD or 3D Drivers "clean install"....Driver Sweeper F8 yada yada yada yada.....I still have the 8 nv HD Audio Drivers appearing in my Device Manager under Sound....then have to go back to System Devices and disable again.......am I always now going to have these 8 copiesof nv HD Audio devices showing up under Sound and ha to go through thiis procedure everytime I install a new Driver package..?
I thought the clean install of Beta 260.xx would get rid of this garbage from my system?

Looks like a clean install of Windows is going to be the only way to get rid of these 8 devices permanently?

Was also looking for a link to what you refer to as Driver Cleaner...cannot seem to find a "free download" anywhere...

thanks

a clean install will not fix that issue.. you will probably have to do it every time you change drivers cause it rerecognizes the hardware when you install new drivers cause it wll see it as a new device

Re:PROCEEDURE to PERMANENTLY DISABLE THE NVIDIA HD sound device(BLACK SCREEN & LOGIN FIX) 2010/09/29 12:01:27 (permalink)
What card is this specifically for? I got a lil confused here.. is this for gtx 450 owners? I have a gtx 460 and i never have any problems recently only freezes in 1 game and that's battlefield bad company 2 but my pc was dusty that day and i didn't clean it for two weeks but it's clean now and it's fine. I'm just skeptic that's all.
This is mine..

PCI bus 3, device 0, function 0

I don't know where to look for the sound cuz it's a little confusing to the topic here. I don't have problems though but i do get FLICKERS from time to time playing Star Trek Online. The Flickers went away when playing the beta drivers but they are unstable drivers.. i had crashes from those. I'm sticking to the current ones. Hopefully Nvidia gets all this info and integreted it in the next fix and we'll be all better.

This worked for me thanks! I was getting random black screens at idle and while I had already tried driver sweeper and not installing the Nvidia HD audio device drivers, it would not would work. Disabling it and following your instructions to the T has worked and I haven't had a black screen in 3 days so far which is the longest yet since I got my gtx 470 3 weeks ago.

I followed your instruction in disabling the NVIDIA HD audio device.  However, whenever I use any 3D apps that utilize SLI such as Furmark (multi-GPU) or Bad Company 2, the screen would go black and system crashes as soon as the app starts using SLI.  I tried Furmark (single GPU) with SLI enabled and no problem.  Tried both latest beta and official driver.  Individual card ran flawlessly by itself.  I honestly think this is an issue with the driver in SLI configuration.  Currently using 480GTXs in 2-way SLI.  I also had similar black screen crashes when using 460 GTXs in SLI although it's more random.

@vucanes

if you are running 2 cards you must make sure that you have disabled both audio devices (one on each card).. and if your not running 2 monitors uninstall the nvidia surround drivers

Yup I disabled both audio device.  As soon as I ran Furmark (multi-GPU), black screen crash happens.  Any other trick?
