I am having trouble installing XP on my 790i.

I put in the CD rom, and i hit the "any"key and it loads the files.  After it loads, it says Starting windows, and then I get the BSOD.

I entered bios defaults, still get it.  I put the ram to stock manufacture specs and still nothing.  Any suggestions?

Do you have the SATA drivers and other chipset drivers slipstreamed into the Windows install?

It sounds like you are missing your chipset drivers from the XP CD and causing it to crash.

Is this a Microsoft XP install disk (system builders or retail), or an OEM install disk?

what does that mean slipstreamed??   It is a retail version of XP disk.

it is a very old copy, prior to Service pack 2.  I want to say from 2004

"Prior to SP2 Windows XP does not support PCI-Express Video cards during the install, at least not the more recent ones, which is what your Inspiron has. You have to use a Windows XP disk that includes SP2 to install."

is this so??

Possibly.  Sounds like a good explaination.

Slipstream:
A technique of extracting the contents of the disk into a folder, adding new content to the install files, and then burning the contents back onto a disk

Basically, you can make your own XP install disk using the original disk but make this new disk have more items than the original.  You can add your chipset drivers to it including your SATA drivers -- which I am sure you will need in order for the install to work (you will find this out further in the install).  You could also add the SP2 to the slipstream disk.

I have never done a slipstream, so someone else will have to give you guidance.  Or you could do a search on the subject.  I read a guide once which seemed pretty complete and included all the instructions and links to software you need in order to do the process.  But I don't know where it is now.
