Hey i have a  970 part number 04G-P4-2974-KR
Asus sabertooth 990fx with amd fx 8320 16gb corsair vengeance with a older antec 1000watt psu.

I've been having lately random shutdowns with asus sensor monitor reporting that the PCI-E was at 100 plus centigrade. Which im assuming is what caused the PC to shutdown. I have everything set to stock settings. RAM CPU GPU. Still having issues. I thought it was the ACX fan so i turned that up and it would run fine but then shutdown and recover from same PCI-E temperature.  I have my old 770 and running since the morning today with no shutdowns so far. Any suggestions on what else to troubleshoot to determine if its the 970?

I had that problem but it was some other program messing with the ASUS software causing an incorrect reading.  I think it was the Corsair H100 Cooler software causing the problem for me.

Most folks would tell you to dump that ASUS monitoring software. There is basically no need for it. It's more than adequate to check your temps weekly in the BIOS. If you keep your system clean and are not running some ridiculous over clocks, there is no reason for running those programs all the time.

I use the asus for the fan control so i chose to uninstall the Corsair software after I set the lights on the H100 like I wanted them.

Well the issue isnt really the temps its reporting, its the shutting down part.  What could be causing it to shut down at random, i have everything at stock. And the only new hardware thats been added is the 970 SC

I had this issue when i first got my z77... Random shutdowns, usually when I wasnt even on the computer.. And i would have to flip the switch on my psu to off then back to on before it would boot up again. I thought it was a bigger issue as I never had this problem with previous builds. I went so far as to RMA the board (though there was another reason anyway, I couldnt get my sound card in because the PCI slot was slightly off center)... just to find the new one still did it. I also bought a new PSU thinking my old psu was possibly the cause, still happened..

It turned out that if you have more then one monitoring app running, they conflict with the way ai suite accesses the sensor readings. And the sensors start reporting wrong values and freeze up. Idk if your computer ends up thinking cpu temps are insane and auto shuts down or what. For me, the other app i was running was aida64 (but i was able to have the same thing happen running other monitoring programs instead).. So at first I uninstalled the ai suite but couldnt find any other program to control my fans that worked for me.

I originally had ai suite 2 ..and I dont remember what the install options are called in it but I ended up just not installing the parts that had anything to do with monitoring stuff (except the fan xpert.. or maybe I just installed the fan xpert?) ..again, i dont remember the options.. maybe there wasnt even install options and it might have been options in ai suite to disable parts of it. Its wierd because the fan part uses the temps, so idk why that didnt still cause it, but it worked for me.

    Anyway...

Eventually I found a thread on the asus rog forums for getting ai suite 3 to make to work on my z77, figured Id try that out since I didnt like ai suite 2 at all anyway (not that the version of 3 I have running is really any better). So I ended up doing that little thing and installing it with just the dual intelligent processors 4 (which is a bundle of crap, like OC stuff.. TPU, EPU, DIGI+, and fanxpert.. all I wanted was the fan stuff but its not its own option sadly, but I just ignore all the other tabs and only use the fan one) and also the usb 3.0 boost and it has been a very very long time since Ive had those random shutdowns

...but as for it only happening with the 970, idk lol

You can go into the bios and tell it to ignore warnings I think. Try uninstalling the asus stuff or just the corsair stuff and see if it solves the problem.  I have the z77 sabertooth mobo.

What temperature is the 970 reaching under load? Have you tried using GPU-z or PrecisionX?

The issue IS the temps it is reporting. It is reporting the wrong temps due to a software conflict. The wrong (high!) temp is triggering a system shutdown.

That may prove to be the problem, but the OP still hasn't posted what the GPU temps are.  It's best to quickly rule that out as a possible cause.
