Ok, I've just bought this new rig from newegg and I'm trying set up this new PC with the proper memory timings so that I'm running the 4 chips at 1600mhz. I'm using GSKILL Rippers (F3-12800CL9D) - 4- 4GB modules (16GB total). Now, if I install the P-55 with the bios at default settings - everything runs fine, but I'm concerned that my memory is running at 1300mhz. When I adjust the memory speed setting the bios to the one setting (only have 2 settings -default and whatever the other one) the chips run at 1600mhz, but the system starts throwing memory errors and it unstable. Example- on that setting I ran the X86 mem test and she lit up with errors and failures. However, on the default settings it passes the mem test perfectly. Can someone please recommend settings in the bios for me to get this to work correctly. I would appreciate your help immensely.

G.SKILL doesn't make a 16GB kit for the Ripjaws series. I assume then, that you're using a PC with (2) kits of 8GB Ripjaws pairs? Please confirm with a link to your PC's specs or to the RAM model itself. Also, what processor are you running? You can't run DDR3-1600 natively with an i3 or i5 CPU, but you can with an i7. More on that later once we get the specific PC and memory kit from you. Once we do that, we can manually put in the RAM timings, voltages, and even give you a slight overclock if necessary in order to get your RAM up to 1600 mhz. But like I said, please link to the PC itself link to the specific memory kit. If you don't know which memory you're running specifically, we can get that figured out.

Thanks for the prompt response. I'm running 2 gskill 8gb kits(part number listed in OP). My processor is the i5. You say you can't run 1600mhz w/i5?? Why is that? Thanks for your help!

This kit, correct? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314 You can't run 1600mhz native because the i5 is limited by its RAM multipliers. Your BCLK interchanges data over to your RAM controller via a set ratio - your RAM multiplier. On the i3/i5, you have the following: 2:6 2:8 2:10 On i7s however, you have the following: 2:6 2:8 2:10 2:12 *Notice that the i7 has the extra 2:12 multiplier. I'm not too sure on what the 2 really is for, but the second number is much more important and is easier to comprehend. Multiplying your base clock by the second number gives you the speed at which your RAM will run at when you leave BIOS. It's important to keep your RAM speed at or below its recommended frequency (unless you're advanced and are overclocking your RAM). As an example, consider the following. At stock clocks, you'll be running with a 133 BCLK (regardless of 1156 CPU), and the default memory multiplier is 2:10. So, with some simple multiplication, you'll see that your RAM will run at 1333 mhz (133 BCLK * 10 multiplier). In order to run DDR3-1600 at 1600 mhz at stock processor clocks, you'll need the 2:12 multiplier (133 * 12), only available to i7 processors for one reason or the other. If you refer to the above chart, then you'll see that the i5, regardless of model, does not have a 2:12 multiplier. The only solution to this would be to do a slight overclock to 160 BCLK, and run the 2:10 RAM multiplier (160 * 10 = 1600). But trust me, overclocking to that is much easier than it sounds.

Thanks for the detailed response. That makes total sense, so I'll stay put at the default settings for now.

Kewl Sleepee. I have similar issue but with the i3-550,EVGA P55 LE with these G.Skill Ripjaws: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231303 So If what your saying is I just need to bump up my BLCK to 160 and run the 2:10 RAM multi @ 160* 10 = 1600. Will that default the timings to the specs of my RAM?Or do I need to adjust those too? Currently it is running at likr 1333mhz 9-9-9- Haven't messed with the RAM in BIOS since the initial build and when I did...guess I didn't know what I was doing and had to restart clearing CMOS each time I tried to set it up.Yes...1st newbie builder here.Got to build mine maybe this weekend.MB arrives tomorrow! Sure wish I could see this RAM in all it's glory. Have a great nite man.

Sure wish I could see this RAM in all it's glory. Have a great nite man. Exactly. The very minimum that you need to run 1600 mhz would be a BCLK of 160, and the 2:10 RAM multiplier. Your timings, if set manually, will remain the same - make sure that you do that. Timings will not change unless you change them yourself. Your sticks are rated to run at that maximum frequency with the timings specified, 7-8-7-24. Good luck with your build this weekend, and have an awesome night yourself!

Ok...just went into bios and it doesn't allow me to change BCLK to 160.Weird thing is I do have the option to select 2:12 RAM multi @1600. Back where I started with this yet again originally. Glad this is just the gf's rig but wish I could get it set at optimal speed for her cityville stuff. So still at the original point I was at when 1st built this rig. Guess there's more to it than a simpleton can figure out. Any clue as to what I can do? Also didn't ya say ya had to OC an i3-550 inorder to config RAM properly? I'd like to give it a simple OC and get the full potential outta this RAM. This machine has been awesome so far and trouble free, and loving the EVGA 560 Ti SC in it too! Regard's, EviL One

You'll need to enable Manual BCLK Control (I think that that's what that label is called). Look for it under the same screen as Frequency/Voltage Control.
