Hi Guys,

So I've tried overclocking my GTX 970 with pretty abysmal results.

This is literally the highest I can get it to go before it crashes on all 3 benchmarking software I use (Fur/Valley/Heaven)
Im pretty new to this overclocking business but I havent even started touching voltages.

Surely this card can OC better than I'm getting?

Many thanks

Anyone?
I just want to know whether I'm missing a fundamental part to this overclocking process or I simply cannot overclock my card all that much.
Which, is slightly annoying considering I've seen some of the people on here get their clock speeds alot higher with the same card.

Overclocking these chips are different from one another. One may do better or less than the other. I was like you trying to use what others got to what I was getting. The settings in precision look good, but what are you clocks at full load with boost. From my tinkering and learning a boost of 1500 is very good. I'm at 1504 boost clock right now. Hope it helps.

Thanks for replying mate.

How do I enable boost?
I'm running Valley at full load and I'm hitting 1316mhz, but that is with DEFAULT settings in Precision

Boost is auto as far as I know. In my case, I got a better overclock using MSI afterburner. Precision wouldn't load up my overclock settings at start up. Once you hit that wall where the card fails at a overclock try bumping up the voltage a bit. I would say no more than 60.

Ah right okay. My voltage meter doesn't seem to go above 37 anyway.
I've pretty much hit the wall at +110 gpu offset.
I can't even get the memory offset to +10 without it failing.
It seems very strange that there is such a huge difference especially from the memory perspective on these cards. People getting +500/+600

I know the OP pain as ( or so i thought at the time ) my 780 was a terrible OCer, i could not even get 80+ on Core without a driver crash but this is where it gets interesting for me anyway. I was tinkering with my CPU OC and remembered i had a TPU switch on MB for OCing so i turned switch on and noticed my CPU OC was way more stable and could even go higher. So for fun i cranked up OC on gpu up to 80 again and ran Heaven and no crash this time....was like hmm..played crysis 2 for little which always pretty much showed me weather my OC was stable or not in mins. So then i went 100+ on core, tested again and same results, no crash. So then im like yolo! Cranked it up to 150 on the core and still no crash, was like what the....added 60 to memory and still stable.

Now as far as i knew the TPU switch only effected the CPU for Ocing unless it somehow effects the power output on my MB and allows more juice or something idk...ill be honest..i have not googled as i did not want to know lol, it worked so wasnt complaining at time but the total boost clock of that 780 went to 1203 total with 160+ so def was not bad.

I found this out after i had my 980 ACX that i sold and the acx i had seemed like a bad OCer also, barely 1400 but wish i had tried the TPU with it to see if it mattered or not, who knows maybe it dont but the 980 classy i got now OCs way better, 1542 total with 100+ on core and mem and no voltage or power target increases yet and while gaming the card aint even at max usage at 1542 which makes me think i can go even higher but staying at 1542 for now.

Interesting mate!
All my CPU stuff is locked at stock, I might unlock the turbo switch on that and see if it makes any difference.
I won't bother touching any CPU OC as I've been down that painful road before! :D

Thanks for the suggestion/advice/tip/story :D

Ya i did ramble quite a bit :p but depending how fast ur CPU is u may not even have to overclock and from what ive seen myself, alot of Motherboards have that TPU switch for OCing so if urs does u might wanna try just for fun and see what happens with ur gpu overclock and bumping up the voltage a tad. Honestly not sure what the safest voltage is to go to for a OC but hope u get it straightened out. Worse case is u could just sell ur card and rebuy. Lame i know but i did but not soley because my OCs werent that great, it was mainly because did not realize the classifieds were coming out that soon when i bought my acx version but ya.

With some MB, its as simple as going into the bios and find the auto overclock feature. On my sabertooth, I had 2 choices for OCing. This feature auto overclocked everything from the cpu to the ram with one click. Just remember to keep an eye on your temps.

What benchmark software do you use?
I'm finding Valley is probably the one that I get the least crashes from so I'm sticking with that, but once I find a stable clock (if I can get higher than before) then I'll put it through the others and some FarCry4 game play.

Well, you say that, I've got a slightly annoying and getting worse coil whine on my GPU at the moment so I'm considering sending it back anyway, but I'm not really one to moan about things like that.

Yeah, same as mine dude, most of them have user friendly OC features these days, but the problem I have is that my Motherboard doesn't allow my specific CPU to OC - I'm literally just about to check for a firmware update for it - If nothing then i'll just hope turning on the turbo switch helps!

Back to reinstalling Valley/MSI Afterburner - I'll let you know how I get on shortly

Probably has nothing to do with it, but just in case make sure in your Nvidia driver settings, you have " prefer maximum performance" selected, rather than " adaptive", in the power setting.

I have "adaptive" set....
When I try and change it, it just reverts back when I close and reopen the problem (after clicking Apply)

Any ideas?

Hmm, now that is strange, it should save this setting. You are setting it globally correct?

Ya only problem with that is if u use that feature it is a absolute must u have CPUZ installed as some motherboards like to over use the voltage, way more than is needed. I used that feature and it put my intel at 1.5 volts...so it is a good idea just make sure u check volts and temps afterwards.

I use Heaven and uh, ( just reinstalled windows so not sure of settings ) i use extreme, ultra, 8xaa, pretty much everything max except tesselation and use ur resolution ur monitor is.

And depending where u got the card from say like newegg, u can might even send it back in and exchange it, specially if it has coil whine u have ur reason right there and specially if its that bad of a OCer. Some ppl say its lottery and just deal with it but the money ppl put on out these cards, they expect good OC results so i would have 0 issues RMAing the card and saying hey i want a exchange where ever u bought it from.

Ugh should of quoted all in one reply lol, forgot >.> but uh what card did u have prior to the one u got now? Did u uninstall all drivers prior to installing new card then install drivers? Could be why getting error, never had that issue so not rly sure what would cause it but thats my 2 cents.

Yeah man, I did exactly that, I used that software that uninstalls all the little extras as well, cant remember the name - something like display driver uninstaller - its completely gone.

I've read a few people online suggesting the same thing, but i've also read a few people with the same issue.

Ive tried setting the application as admin, but that does nothing either... By doing that, I'm not even able to launch the control panel
Im gonna try a fresh install again!  hmph!

This setting seems logical to me which is why I'm going through the effort again!

Thanks for all your comments guys, appreciate it.

Yeah you should not have to set it to admin, you should be able to set it, hit apply, and have it take. Something a little strange there.
Best of luck, let us know if you get it.

I would run one of the good driver uninstaller programs again, set it to search for any remaining AMD driver remnants.

SORTED!
The mistake I made last time was not to go into Safe Mode to uninstall the drivers.
Uninstalled both AMD and NVIDIA drivers and then reinstalled NVIDIA alone.

Time to start the OC process!

Wish me luck!

Re: Overclocking EVGA GTX 970 SC 2.0 - Advice needed :( 2014/11/22 13:33:09 (permalink)
Fail..
Exactly the same issue.  Well, it was even worse when I tried with AA:8x (I had disabled before).
Max I can get is now 105% GPU offset.
Tried increasing the volts, but that just fails instantly.

*sigh*

Thanks for all your help guys, really really appreciate your time.  Looks like I'll be sending it back for the coil whine anyway, hopefully get a better OC'er this time

Sorry, was hoping that might do it for you.
Btw, do you know what your ASIC quality rating is?
