I understand this is basically a reference card with EVGA's custom cooler on it, but can it also be over clocked, since it's not SC or SC+ ?

I am talking about with applications like EVGA Precision X or MSI Afterburner, not messing with BIOS.

does this just depend on the ASIC quality?

Yes, you can overclock this card using one of the programs listed. Lots of people will say ASIC quality will define how well you can overclock yet I had a 74% card overclock way less compared to a 68% card when I was running the 970 SSC. Like almost 200 mhz different. As far as I know all ASIC quality is calculated on is what voltages are required to be at the bios default speeds of the card. I could be wrong on this. If you read the disclaimer on the new binned versions of the 980ti evga states that an overclock still is not guaranteed on a high asic quality.

Things that are an issue to slow an overclock:

-Voltage the gpu needs to run at the given clock without stability or errors (artifacts / crashing / tdr)
-Temperature of the gpu / temp target
-Power of the gpu under load / power target

Alright cool. My current 970 can over clock pretty well and it's 68%. I am hoping I can just over clock the stock 980 Ti with the ACX 2.0 cooler to be as powerful as the SC or the SC+.

Now one final hurdle, getting a 980 Ti with either Hynix or Samsung Memory modules. When I open that box up, if I see Elpida, I'm gonna scream XD

You'd have to remove the cooler and memory plate to see whether it's samsung or hynix, right?

GPU-Z will tell you what memory the card has.

Thanks, didn't know that. Now I know I have Hynix yay. Is it really completely random whether a 980ti has Hynix, Elpida or Samsung?

Pretty much yeah. I expect going forward well only be seeing hynix since they are the only ones producing HBM. Elpida went out of business afiak so we won't be seeing them any more on newer cards.

I got a 970 with elpida on it and it was awful. I'm sure some elpida cards are good but they seem like they have low QC standards.

I'd love to know approximately which cards have which memory modules.
