Operating System: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit
NVIDIA Driver Version: 331.38
Graphics Cards: 2x GTX 580
X Screens: Screen 0 (SLI)
X Server Version Number: 1.11.3
NV-Control Version Number: 1.29

NVIDIA X Server Settings -> OpenGL Settings -> Enable SLI Visual Indicator

With SLI Visual Indicator enabled, a game intro screen is stuck displaying the first frame.  Audio continues in the background for 5-10 seconds and then the game crashes to desktop.  With SLI Visual Indicator disabled, the animation works properly and the game does not crash to desktop.

Has anyone else experienced this?  If so, any tips other than to disable SLI visual indicator?

Thanks!

It sure was nice when there was a Linux section to this forum.  Not that there was very much action there.  But it gave people a separate place to hang out and gave topics a chance to sit in the spotlight for a while until the answer became apparent.  Now, it's just a big mash-up of unrelated topics in the same section with no specialized regular viewers of the forum section and your topic hurdles down to the bottom of the topic list if it is anything other than regular and generic.

I searched online but found no results. I filed a bug report with NVIDIA but don't expect a response.

Currently, from what I am gathering, the SLI support is very lacking in Linux. Nvidia is just getting things together for SLI under Linux and even most of the supported 'fixes' aren't stable right now. I would doubt that even the latest driver really gets it correct. You may be experiencing a bug in the code for the SLI under your distro that they haven't squashed yet. Personally I wouldn't trust or use the visual indication as it may not truly give an apt measure of your SLI being utilized. Most games that I know of in Linux right now (at least the ones I play) don't support SLI and barely support any type of PhysX under X.org. Not to say the neaveau drivers are any better, at least Nvidia is pushing out drivers for distributions currently.

As with anything Linux based it'll get better but I don't think it's truly where it needs to be right now. I'm sure they're looking at your report and investigating. Well hopefully they are.

You could always take a look at the x.org crash log to see where the problem is and if any indication as to an incompatibility exists. It may be in the /var/log/Xorg.*.log that you may want to investigate to see if any crash indicators are available. Also you may want to take a look at the application in question itself to see if any crash logs are generated.

[edit]
By the way, the revision of the driver you are using is fairly old (in relation to releases) and might need to be refreshed to the current code to possibly eliminate any lagging problems and get you to at least their current 'approved' standard. It is located here ----> http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/76278/en-us

I have finally had a chance to do a little gaming and testing.  331.79 seems to have less problems with SLI visual indicators than 331.38, but problems still exist and seems to be affect some games more than others.  With 331.79, I haven't gotten any games to crash yet with SLI visual indicators, but some games have random graphical glitches such as blank screens in certain areas or strange textures around some objects overlayed over other objects when SLI visual indicators enabled.

Glad that you got at least a bit of it resolved. I'm sure they will improve the newer released drivers over the course of time.

Re: OpenGL SLI Visual Indicator crashes Game 2014/12/21 13:51:37 (permalink)
Update:
Ubuntu's desktop environment appears to have gotten worse in regards to support of multiple NVIDIA cards.  A couple months ago, I upgraded to 14.04.  That was a big mistake.  14.04 is horribly broken with SLI enabled and causes random flickering textures in the desktop environment and eventually crashes or freezes.

Even with SLI disabled, 14.04 seems to have an issue with flickering objects some times.  Sometimes, buttons or images in a program/window flicker on and off which causes text to constantly change position as the window refreshes each time a button or image flickers on or off.  This makes reading and navigating very difficult.  Also, folders in the file manager sometimes don't appear (invisible) until the mouse is passed over where the folder should be.  Stuff like that.  Horribly broken.  I tried all sorts of different NVIDIA drivers and also tried Ubuntu's open-source Nouveau drivers.

I started using OpenBox instead of Ubuntu's default desktop environment because OpenBox loads faster and doesn't have the above NVIDIA compatibility issues.  But due to all the hassle and inability to use both of my video cards, I finally caved in and re-installed Windows 8.1 a few days ago.  I am sad that I had to go back to Windows.  I hope Ubuntu improves.

Regarding SLI in Linux operating systems and flickering textures, I found this very helpful:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/775250/linux/enabling-sli-makes-all-the-windows-start-flashing-on-ubuntu-14-04/post/4310915/#4310915

Others may find it helpful as well.

TL;DR: like James_L stated earlier in this thread, don't try using multiple NVIDIA cards in Linux.
