Alicorn is what the horn is called on a unicorn... I still wanna know when it became a saying for winged unicorns... In fact the show itself calls them Unicorn Pegasus, In fact Alicorn only exist in parts of the MLP fandom and not MLP itself. It is a fan term that came from somewhere but is not really what they are called...

Alicorn is the mixture of the latin word of Wing (Ala) and the latin word of Horn (corn).
Alicorn = Winged Horn

Alicorns have more innate magical talent than normal unicorns the unicorns knowing this gave up their right to control the seasons and offered servitude towards Celestia.
The only thing that differentiates Alicorns and Unicorns is innate magical talent implying that all Unicorns can become Alicorns.
 
Unicorns with large magic reservoirs -became-> Alicorns (The Alicorns have also been noted in Dragon lore as well... Alicorns have the blood of the first dragon so the dragon lineage does show Dragons can transform into Alicorns as well)
Unicorns without magic affinity - became-> Earth ponies (lost their horns since they didn't need it anymore)
Unicorns with magic affinity but no horn to channel it through -became-> Pegasus ponies (lost the horn but kept the wings)
