WOW Q nice ..  your still going.... he..he yes very baby steps......but every step is better than the last

hombredelassrtas

spec friggn tacular setup sniper. i may look into that heat exchanger ... hmmm. you can just put it inline with the current radiator setup right? so i just disconnect the 2nd loop when not needed and wont need to drain the system or anything each time right?

Thanks Mate.........yeah thats how I had mine setup, but BE CAREFULwith the temps, depending on were your radiator is, it could go very bad.

Mine was at the top of the system, and at the end of a couple of hour benching, I looked in and saw water sitting on top of the video card PCB,.....ahhhhh...... I shut everything down and was VERY LUCKY no damage. ...... It turned out that cold water running through a radiator...can get a little (or a lot) of Condensation in the radiator fins, and with the fans on, it blows it down were you DON'T want it......

After that i made sure to turn my fans off (And found that it got colder, the ambient temp through the Radiator was actually warming the water up.)
Plus a bit of paper towel siting on top of the GPU PCB worked a treat......And finally bypassing the radiator was the best way because it was still warming up the temps.......Quick disconnects work well, for all these alternatives

Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I actually have all of my stuff (except res but it can't drip on anything) on the base of the case and my res is actually under a separate shroud on the base of the case so with the exception of the gpu block condensation (is that a big issue?) i should be solid even if it floods condensation :D

Sniper, that's amazing!  Great job...looks like the 480 scales really well in SLI.  Better than any other card I've seen.

So would it be fair to say that my 960 is a bum chip if it requires 1.525vcore to run 4.2GHz?  The jump from 4.0GHz to 4.2 is a little over .14v... yikes.

I have been putting off building a new dev machine so this 960 will go into that new build (assuming it survives the night).  I have a little friend with a couple of extra cores on the way.  Hopefully I have better OC luck with it.

nope...not necessarily....chips are a funny thing...
i thought my 920 was a poj (piece of junk), but once it went under dice and came back...the chip was far more cooperative then...i didn't think that was the case at first...till i talked to a few over at xs who said the cold seems to loosen hard to clock chips up.

and the 980x is far easier to over clock than the 960...you can over clock it in windows and go.

That's interesting about the dice.  Never heard that.  Can't I just stick the proc in my freezer instead of building a dice rig?

Anyway, the increased clock barely got me above where I was before, an unposted 42k.  I just had to compromise on too many things to get the chip to run at 4.2ghz so it just wasn't worth it to go any further.

Looking for at least 4.4ghz on the new chip.

ummmm, if you can turn the cpu on and bench it in your fridge, other wise..no.

over clocking is a bit more than just raising and dropping clocks..and it takes far more work than someone on dice or ln2 and even more work if you on air.
and it's not an over night thing either...

Have you tried skipping 4.2 on your 960 and go straight to a higher blk?  With my 960, I use 25x192 @ 1.66v on water cooling.

Interesting Q56..  I tried going right up to 4.4 @ 1.54 with no luck and was just concerned to push it further.  I didn't know people really pushed these CPUs above 1.6v unless they were on LN2/DICE, but this is my first i7 so I am by no means a great overclocker.

I'll give the higher clock & voltage a try later tonight if I have the time.  Thanks!

Don't worry you can't do anything to it, it'll shut off by itself if it gets too hot, or doesn't like your settings.  BSOD's are good..they tell you what is going on to tweak.  So don't stress and have fun....

Thanks for the input Q56 and johnksss...  I went as far as 1.63v and ran out of time tonight.  Problem is, I had to give up my overclocked QPI and drop my uncore down pretty far to run 4.3 (4.4 was a no-go -- maybe tomorrow when I get more balls).  So ultimately my Vantage runs were a little slower due to the other changes.

Tomorrow I should get some nice gains, really looking forward to posting something here with some meat to it!

Take care guys and chat with you tomorrow.

Oh, almost forgot... made some good use of those nifty VL4 connectors from Koolance on my last run attempt.  Plugged in another Feser quad into my main loop, laid it down across two deep dish bowls, and laid down a layer of ice chips right on the fins before the run started.

Haha.  The air coming out of my main rad was ambient (~27C) and the ice dropped my peak CPU temps about 20C, GPU temps about 10C.  No condensation I could see, and I looked VERY carefully.

My attempt at a poor man's water chiller.   And FWIW two large cups of ice only last about 1 run.

Take care guys and chat with you tomorrow.

your just about there...one or two slight changes should have you right back on track.

not to bad for a first run...looks like you had to dial back a bit though

I didn't have everything setup for doing hard benching. Not only that, but either parallel cooling 2 cards in SLi is a bad move or this video card I just received has an issue. The card I just got ran about 26°C hotter then my other card during the Vantage run.
