Quick question, I'm about to buy either a ACX GTX 780 or the classified version this week. Is the Classified version worth the extra over the standard ACX version or is it mainly just for overclocking? Thanks in advance.

Yes. No one should ever buy anything other than the classy unless it doesn't fut in their case. That $40 gets you a binned chip and amazing overclocking potential. Just bump up the sliders in PrecisionX and bam 10% more performance. Those cards will go to at least 1300MHz on air.

I wouldn't go that far at all, at least not as a blanket statement for those who don't feel comfortable running high voltages on air 24/7. I do agree though that when you're already talking spending $650 it just makes sense to pay what is basically $50 insurance against getting a dud chip that won't clock well at all.

1400 is really pushing it on those cards but IMO 1250-1300 is OK as long as you don't need too many volts.

Fair enough.  1200MHz if you're "Lucky" on a reference, should be said where as a classified you're pretty much going to and then some.

From what I have seen and read, classifieds boost to 1137-1170ish right out of the box and considering these cards are custom made to be overclocked with the dual bios, custom pcb, etc., one would think that classified cards could be overclocked further. I think an oc of another 25mhz or 50hmz over stock boost would not be worth it. It would have to be at least around 10% to be significant, and I have my doubts the cards can do that with any stability. I hope these are just driver issues, and even though classifieds offer at lot of performance at stock clocks, the advertisements, buzz, and specifics features of the card, I was lead to believe that the card could achieve more.

Is anyone else running the Classifieds in SLI and having temp issues?  The cards are overclocked, and the top card reaches the upper 70s after 15-20 mins of Crysis 3, and that's with the TDP only staying in the 85%-90% range (separate issue), and the fans running at 100% past 70C.  I have a HAF X case with the side 200mm fan and have tried both intake and exhaust with similar results.

I'm guessing the issue is my mobo (ASRock Extreme4 Z77), and the fact that the cards are only 1-1.5 inches away from each other.  But I've looked around and it seems people aren't having temp issues with the regular 780 ACX in SLI.  Has anyone else had heat issues with Classifieds in SLI?

Re:Official EVGA GTX 780 Classified Thread 2013/08/04 20:12:56 (permalink)
That is pretty normal. You have to have like 2000 CFM in your case for the top card to not hit those temps with a non vapor chambered heatsink.  Even if you put a house fan on the case with the side off, temps only go down a few C on the top card.

I have mine OC to 1250Mhz right now and with fans maxed out, bottom card is hitting around 52-55C and top card hits 75C often and i have an open air case with much air being directed at it.

These cards were designed to put out quite a bit of power, so in SLI if you really want to go to town on these, waterblocks are a minimum.

The side fan isn't the only factor with airflow.  Unless you have positive inward pressure in the case, proper directional airflow, and good area to breathe in, your case might not cool effectively.  Just depends on what you have going on.

Here's a good page to read to determine if you are:
http://www.demcifilter.com/c48/Performance.aspx

Once you rule out the case, then you can eliminate it as an overheating variable.

Yes!  I have the exact same problem with the exact same setup, the side on exhaust or intake makes no difference, as well as opening the side with a house fan directly on the card.  My peak, regardless of voltage, seems to be 1267MHz, and the only thing holding me back from higher clocks seems to be the temps.  I need waterblocks bad (hint, hint)!  I didn't have temp issues with the SC ACXs but I wasn't satisfied with the OC-ability.  Just depends what you're looking for.

EDIT: I had the same TDP issues as well and changing the global settings to max performance seems to have fixed that.

Only way to get around this is water cooling. With 680's I had in tri-sli all three were always at the same temp, idled at 23-24c and when gaming they never went over 40-45c. In the same case on air the idle was 40c-42c and gaming 75-80c. I don't plan on running the classified's without it, Im thinking the 780's will run cooler then the 680's.

Edit: I'll post the temps on water Tuesday when I get the cards.

Your better off, it's better to have an air cooler and then buy a water block EK blocks usually go for $100 bucks, Hydro Copper is probably closer to $200. Anyhow an air cooler comes in handy for computers that aren't setup for water like my daughters computer, lol they are also easier to sell.

I would be happy, but my country is your option is problematic  (a long delivery and the choice is limited), or ACX (now the air , is temporarily, but not GTX 780) or Hydro at once (pc water cooling system allows)

So far GPU temps have been pretty good for me.  With ambient room temps about 27c my GPU temp has always been under 80c when benchmarking.

Edit:  Corrected room temperatures.

Tell me about it!  But we also have whole house fan that sucks air in from all windows and expels into attic so it's not so bad with the breeze.  As long as humidity is low it's not terrible, but combination of high temps/humidity I turn on air conditioner.

My mistake ... got my conversions mixed up.  Ambient room temps are approx. 27c.
Thanks Jimrun ... will correct my previous posting.

USFORCES

killuchen

My cards will be here today! You guys think I will have heat issues with my coolermaster had x case?

Lucky, mine have been an hour away since yesterday and they don't get delivered until tomorrow evening.. No telling on your temps guess you'll find out today.
I've replaced all the thermal tape on the heatsinks and ready to go.

Mine was less than 40 minutes away since Friday, but freaking UPS wouldn't let me go pick it up from Will call. :( So now I'll get it tonight and hardly have any time to mess with it this week.

Thanks for the input guys, looking at the front fan it seems it's not really pushing much air towards the GPUs, and unfortunately, there's no way to mount fans on the bottom of the HAF X.

The VGA duct that comes with the HAF X would push air out the back, but unforunately the Classifieds are too tall to fit.  Looks like water is the way to go.

Does anyone know why the TDPs (even when running a single card) never seem to exceed 80-90%?  I tried enabling the max performance setting in the nvidia control panel and doesn't seem to help.  Been through the proper uninstall/reinstall (uninstall programs one at a time, reboot, Drive Sweeper, clean install of just Graphics/PhysX drivers) process numerous times to no avail.
