tank1023

I haven't done anything but fold for the last few years, never stopped or paused a work unit for any contest. This isn't the CC it's a contest within EVGA. Who care s if someone timed out the start of the contest.

The vast majority of people are in the same boat as you tank.  There are two things issues here.

  1. Stopping folding to time a drop is contrary to one of our major goals in putting on a contest.
  2. Most of us putting this together have busy lives and cannot commit to sitting at a computer at a specific time on a specific night a month in advance (when the contest was announced).
I don't believe there is any "ideal" solution to this issue.  Regardless of what you do, some people will be upset.  Some will luck out others will not.

People need to focus on the fact that the contest is NOT a 1 day contest, or even a 1 week contest.  We're going for 2-3 weeks and in the long run everything will average out.

If you have a better system in mind, please do suggest it.  We always welcome feedback and look for ways to improve things around here.

Is it too late to get in on this contest?  Been out of folding for a bit, but temps are down and I can put some time into this.

Let me know .. I'm an EST guy.

Seeing some people have over 1000% increase in reported production just makes me not even want to be a part of any contest. We report what we think we will make for balancing and what not. A slight increase is fine but their is someone who has a reported PPD of 17,500 PPD and already had produced 48,973 points in very short time before the end of the first half of the day.

Are their any restrictions or penalty for this like say being excluded from prizes or anything? Just curious as it would maybe keep some of the delinquents inline.

Of course this could average out and what not but just didn't see anything mentioned about this like last year did about false reporting or low reporting of PPD then just blowing up in points.

relax the stats are not finalized yet, it takes a few updates for everything to look normal.

The % are out of wack right now because we have only been at it for a couple of hours and some have dropped big units already. Over the next couple of days you will see things even out, don't worry.

give the stats a day or two if, they are incorrect it will be fixed
I didn't work on the formula...drougnor and troy worked on it

everybody is jumping to conclusions...

those numbers are already dropping off their highs (about 1/2)

in the past when there were stats problems both troy and drougnor fixed it

as for the contest yes it's still open. however you are ineligable for the prizes (unless you get an exception from troy8d... PM him for that)

There any way you can change my PPD to 55k instead of the 200k I said (Gosh I would love to make that much in a  day!)? I messed up when reading it due to my sleeplessness. Feel lame for saying I could do that much when I barely produce 75k from a 6900 WU fter a day and a half.

I will either find a way, or make one.

Half of the day was skipped completely. Please pull my name from the contest as I won't be participating any further in it.

Don't leave, kram, we need every point we can get to defend our title!
I agree it's been frustrating waiting for the contest to start, but that's the risk of a random start time.

+1 kram. I can understand your frustration man,but CST needs ya. I for one hope you change your mind.

Gotta have hope lol. I just switched my -bigadv from all cores to 11 and started the 580s up, let you know after a few % the total PPD. Hoping going from 12->11 cores doesn't effect the bigadv too much.  And no don't know anyone really also folding with PST.

*With the 2 gpus getting ~18k each, and with my -bigadv unit in the yellow still total is ~90k PPD.

Re:Official 2011 Time Zone Challenge Announcements 2011/10/24 21:34:45 (permalink)
If you run -smp 10 -bigadv, you should be able to get 35+k PPD from it and about 17k PPD from each 580. That would net you around 69k PPD or so. The reason I say 10 is because there are units out there that will automatically fail when you have it set to 11. Depending on OCs, you can probably do better than the numbers I quoted.

EDIT:
90K? Wow, much higher than I expected.

So, maybe you will keep 70k or so on it. It will need to be green before it is accurate.

I'll let you know in 2-3 more % when it turns green, I've used -11 before and if my memory serves correct it was right around ~40k PPD (hoping for more). Glad I got my 4.4 overclock stable the other day I'm sure it will help, I noticed a 11-15 second decrease using all cores on a 6900 compared to my 4.2 OC. I kinda was expecting more for ~ 200 MHz increase but I have to remember that's over every individual %.

I will either find a way, or make one.

Total PPD looks to be around 75k. 40k from -11 core bigadv, ~36k for the 2 580s @ 850 core.

I will either find a way, or make one.

So what happened to EST?  Last time I looked their total PPD estimate was around 3.3 million, which wasn't that much higher than any of the other teams.  Now it's around 4 million.  If that's true, the only real race will be for second place.

During the first 24 hours of the compatition there will be problems with big advantages hitting, because the start was random to prevent timing of drops, it will take time for the averages to equal out, some people wer lucky enough to have units finish after the contest started, some were not as fortunate. in the end it should all equal out. this is also why some people are still showing 0% and others over 200%. in a day or two we will be able to tell if anyone made a mistake in their estamate. the winner will also be decided by how lucky people are at the end of the contest, and when those Big advantages hit, some will turn off big advantage as the contest draws near the end, to push more smp, and single CPU units if they do not feel like time will alow a compleation, others will not.

I'm not talking about actuals, I'm talking about estimates ("reported PPD" in the spreadsheets now).  EST's estimate jumped suddenly from 3.3M to nearly 4M at the last minute.  I think I know why and I think it's really poor form to jump in at the last minute and skew things.

I figured that there will be some surprises to PPD estimates (up and down) and that people may find something to add that wasn't there when they did their calcs.  Is there any "sand bagging" that happens?  Possibly, but I'd rather think that the majority of the people in the contest gave their PPDs a good try for the estimate.  I'm not discounting that we have a contest and that it has rules, just that these variables are kinda hard to keep from happening (or maybe even deciphering).  IMO, it's all good no matter which Team wins the Challenge.  The over-all extra production that we collectively achieve is the real win in this thing anyway.

People need to focus on the fact that the contest is NOT a 1 day contest, or even a 1 week contest.  We're going for 2-3 weeks and in the long run everything will average out.

If you have a better system in mind, please do suggest it.  We always welcome feedback and look for ways to improve things around here.

Letting people know the start time might not be a bad thing actually.  Currently i'd imagine someone planned to drop a bigadv at the end of the day.  Being a random time, it's the best thing to aim for in order to get a bigadv in out of the gate.  If everyone knows the start time, then more people can plan on when to drop bigadv's on all teams to limit complaints.

Also, maybe doing a contest to see who knows what there system can do the best?  ie, whoever comes closest to there points estimate after 7-14 days?

Re:Official 2011 Time Zone Challenge Announcements 2011/10/25 08:34:42 (permalink)
I've been there. I wasn't interested
I was the closest in last contest to projected PPD

some systems are easier to project...that's not fair either
and I definitely don't want a prize for my system being consistent
(it also discourages people from producing more)

the problem with detailing/releasing start time...
people forget, don't read,
and by giving out the start time people can stop the wu at 99%..hold it and drop when contest starts
by delaying it. (the points considerably drop) and you are forced to either drop the WU for the points or lose them (it would make less sense to even do bigadv at the start...if you plan doing this)

this discourages cheating

PS: tanner2 should also be thanked for his second unlocked prize (for 230 people signed)

I should have made the announcement last night, but it was late and troy8d still has to change it on the contest page yet
