Truth be told, one of the primary design goals of RepRap and countless other 3D printer designs is the ability to reproduce as much of their design as possible on their own 3D printer. That way, the tech could spread out within the maker/tinkerer community. Patent law has weasled it's way into the 3D printer community though so, those doing parts sales have to worry about patent litigation now.
 
On a related note, we all know the profit formula for printers though. Practically give away the printer and charge insane amounts for the ink. With 3D printers it's patent the printer head and charge for the filament. Don't think it's quite gotten to that point yet, but it will in the next year with people begin enforcing IP and patents and force out the makers in favor of the commercial patent holders churning out cheap 3D printers for consumer desktops.
