Updated 3/20/12

I am extremely happy to report that Nvidia driver 296.10 has completely solved my issue with cold boot driver failure.

It was NOT a system, config or OS problem... it was a driver bug, that has now been patched.

Updated: Videocard BIOS's flashed (at EVGA's suggestion) Official signed 295.73 Nvidia driver -failure-
http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1469247

Status: No Nvidia driversets maintain correct function for longer than 24hrs, later than 285.79

__________________________________________________________________________
After what happened to me yesterday after installing the new 295.51 driver...
http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1438000

I sat down lastnight and wrote a very long and angry post to EVGA about my Nvidia driver issues.
While going over it before posting, I realised that my frustration had consumed the entire post and turned it into nothing more than a angry rant.
While sitting there, I was reminded of how EVGA has been so good to its customers on these fourms, time and time again. Of the repeated kindness and real concern shown on these fourms by EVGA staff...

I deleted my angry rant and went to bed

This morning, I am instead asking for EVGA's help to determine "why" the last three released driversets will not function properly and what direction I should take in restoring my abilty to use the currently released drivers.

Clearly there is nothing wrong with my config. I appear to be suffering from a "bug" in the latest driversets that is preventing me from using them properly.

So I am asking EVGA to stepup and help me determine what the problems are (if need be with Nvidia's help) so the issue can be addressed.

Angry ranting may make me feel better, but its not going to make these Nvidia driversets work...

Luckly, I have extensive experience in such matters and all the time and resources needed to make troubleshooting this issue a realistic effort. I feel confident that between EVGA staff, Nvidia and some of the highly experienced users of these fourms, an answer to this Nvidia driver issue can be found.

My current SLI GTX 580 setup does not work with the last three Nvidia driver releases and I need help.

It will be easier for someone to help you if you describe the problem. Just saying there is an issue is not enough for anyone to fix it.

I am guessing from your last that it is an SLI issue, but it's not clear.

    Well a couple of things...

What driver are you running now?
What problems do the new one cause exactly?
What steps have you already taken to troubleshoot the issues you've found?

I know I'm not a EVGA employee, but I am a concerned party.

My computer finds cures for diseases and searches for aliens when I'm not gaming...what does yours do?

Here is a in-depth technical description of the exact failure noted

Nvidia driver 295.51 downloaded to my desktop
Afterburner settings changed to "not start at windows boot" (to prevent wrapper failure on reboot) and shutdown.
*cards 100% at stock settings, only custom a fan profile used.

    Fresh reboot to desktop

    Start/Control panel/Programs and features
Nvidia entires showing:  Graphics Driver 285.79 and its PhysX version
    PhysX uninstalled normally
    Graphics Driver uninstalled normally
    Restart selected normally

    Reboot into windows
Normal (no driver installed) reboot into windows
Normal "Standard VGA adaptor" installed on GPU 1 and "Failure to install Standard VGA adaptor" on GPU 2
Normal "restart requested" by windows, ignored and closed.
    Nvidia 295.51 installer launched
Unpacked to default location, installed with "Custom Option" only Graphics driver, PhysX and Clean install checked.
    Normal install noted, restart selected

    Normal boot to desktop noted
Nvidia control panel in right click desktop flyout shown
Nvidia control panel used to enable SLI
    SLI enabled normally
Nvidia control panel used to set my standard NVCP settings (3D settings)
Changed: Frames to render ahead from default of (3) to a value of (2) and set to "single display performance mode)
    No other NVCP settings cahnged
Display properties used to confirm screen res and default refresh rate (no changes made)

Afterburner re-enabled and re-set to start with windows

    Computer restarted (rebooted normally)

Appox 2hr of browser use, posting/reading viewing videos (normal, no issues seen thru maybe 15 websites)

Knowing I wanted to do testing later that night with benchmarks and BF3, and that there was a patch for BF3 pending..
I again restarted my computer (normal boot, no issues seen)
Opened Origin/Battlelog (left at idle for 10mins in case of backdoor updates to punkbuster or game), then got link for new browser plugin, shut down Battlelog then Origin and installed the new plugin.
Went back to browsing and posting for appox 1hr.
Then a Full system shutdown (for dinner)

Upon startup, normal booting behavior seen until the windows Logo screen
*Noticed right away the "green pixel" in the top lefthand section of the Logo screen that occurs when a driver is not loaded.
System appeared to "hang" on the windows logo, and the "login chime" was heard while still on the logo screen.
Typing in the Admin password had no effect and a power button full shutdown was needed.

Upon reboot, Windows booted normally but without a driver and I got a single Standard VGA adaptor install notice of failure, but no reboot was requested...
Afterburner gave normal notice that no driver was detected
    Start/Control panel/Programs and features
    Afterburner was uninstalled
Nvidia entires showing:  Graphics Driver 295.51 and its PhysX version seen
    PhysX uninstalled normally
    Graphics Driver uninstalled normally
    Restart selected normally

Normal boot to the desktop without a driver was seen
I used my normal process and re-installed my previous 285.79
All normal steps with the driver and Afterburner were taken
Tested lastnight with 2 passes Heaven and one of 3Dmark11 -and- 4hrs of solid BF3 play.

Attempted another 295.51 install this morning using the exact same steps
Driver installed, SLI enabled and NVCP setup and Afterburner same as before.
    Hot restarts showed no problems
A full shutdown and cold restart showed the same hang at the Windows logo screen as before.

All the same steps taken as before to re-install 285.79

Everything is currently working correctly (with 285.79) and is what I am using now

Well, at the risk of angering a few. This doesn't seem to be widespread. I did my usual simple clean install over the previous BETA. Runs fine. No glitches. Ran Batman AC for while. Seemed normal enough. I'm running SLI 580's with a dedicated 470 for PhysX. In a nut shell what you're saying is after a few reboots, SLI disables itself right? Edit...cold boot the... Is this just on one system? What is in your system or what have you changed that is non-standard? When is the last time you did a clean OS install? You may have a corrupted driver store/registry or a service that isn't running correctly.

Thank you bro for your input (which I value highly)

If you remember, when I had problems with 290.36?
I did a full OS reinstall after that and still had the no SLI option available.

The issue has now progressed in this latest release, to full Nvidia driver failure to install on a cold boot.
*it is unknown if the previous drivers also had this cold boot issue, as I never bothered to do full testing once I saw I could not enable SLI

Those 7950's are talking to me! I know AMD has their share of crap drivers, but they're looking better than Nvidia, since Nvidia split into two teams..

Strange issue. Have you swapped the cards around? I had one 470 (out of 3) which would not run in SLI properly if it was in the first PCIe slot. I had to mark it to make sure it wasn't in the first slot or SLI wouldn't work. Slot 2 or 3 it was fine. The other question is, I know you disable some services on your installs. Have you considered re-enbling them for testing? And lastly by 'clean OS install' are you doing this from a backup or actually doing a virgin install from a Win 7 disk?

So far the info I have gathered from your post is that there might be a program that is conflicting with your drivers.
I would suggest uninstalling Afterburner/precision, let the drivers install first, reboot, install Afterburner/Precision.
    what is your OS, btw?

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags!
The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. When you abuse it, it reverses on you and it hurts you.The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Virgin OS reinstall, and 290.36 install was done before I made my normal changes to my processes and services list.

No, I have not switched my cards....
Dont see how that would have any effect, as both cards have the exact same default VID and have functioned normally with the last 10 diversets leading up to the first problems starting with 290.36

At this point I am ready to do whatever it takes, and I run a dual boot system so its no big deal to reinstall and do serious work on this problem. I am really open to anything and have the time and desire to do whatever it takes

Dang this sucks for sure. Nvidia needs to step  up their game and provide us with some good drivers. And they need to release some WHQL Drivers and stop feeding us these buggy beta drivers. =/

Maniacvvv, why don't you try the nVidia recommended method and just run the installer and overwrite existing drivers? That's what I always do (couldn't be bothered with "ultimate driver install guides") and never had any problems...

I had to update my network lan driver for SLI option to become available (Realtek, or whatever you have).  Don't ask me why, but it was suggested to me and did the trick when switching from a single 570 to sli.  This driver update gave me no problems though.

Have you tried removing Afterburner and leaving it off while testing?

Also, I know this may seem unrelated, but have you ran a chkdsk /r on your windows drive? I bring this up as there could be something corrupting the drivers, and a failing HDD can do just that.

I am very OCD about my config, all my drives are tested monthly (except my SDD, only after installing and when my speed begins to drop its Secure Erased and the OS on it is reinstalled)
I run a dual boot setup, all my Nvidia drivers go on my platter drive for testing before they ever go on my SSD install.

Yes, for Afterburner I did test on the cold restart without it being installed.

Maniacvvv, why don't you try the nVidia recommended method and just run the installer and overwrite existing drivers? That's what I always do (couldn't be bothered with "ultimate driver install guides") and never had any problems...

Thats what HeavyHemi suggested.... I will be trying that today, along with about 10 other things as well

I dont have the log file tool yet from EVGA

But a review of the Windows event logs, clearly points to a PnP device Init issue based on "something" about the way the driver is interacting with Windows and my MB bios (thats my guess) as this does not occur with driver 285.79 and previous versions...
I completely fail to understand this, as the PnP and VGA adaptor Init should occur -before- the driver is queued to load... very odd behavior, and not something that has ever happened on previous drivers.

"tested monthly" and no offence, but since I don't know what/how you test them, I'm inclined to take that comment w/ a grain or two of salt..
Have you ran chkdsk /r on the drives since your current run at the problem?

i didnt have a problem with any of the newer beta drivers running quad sli. they just did not perform as well. i stuck with the 285.62 drivers as these work best.

No chkdsk, I use HD Tune for health checks and performance monitoring on my platters, as well as Perfect disk for defragging

I do alot of Video production stuff on my rig, and HD health is critical... I learned that lesson the hard way years ago... all my drives are checked regularly, if one is starting to show any errors, I dump it and get another one.

ok, the version of HD Tune i have doesn't look for file system errors, granted mines pretty old, so based off that, run the chkdsk /r on the drive, it will find the things that HD tune doesnt look for (as in NTFS file system errors)
running it from your SSD on your platter drive might be the easiest. you do that by running the following from a command prompt "chkdsk #: /r" where # is the drive letter of your platter drive with windows on it.

Can you try adjusting the memory low gap.

Since the new installer i was advised to turn off Afterburner/Precision then install, ive never been told to restart after install by the installer .Ive had no problems even when doing SLI 480's . Sorry this is happening but i guess i have to ask is either program running on install ?
