i had the same issue.
untill i had the motherboard drivers and the rest installed from the CD, the only 2 USB ports that would work on the back were the top 2.
now with the drivers installed, no more issues except for one:
when i plug in my external usb soundcard (3d G4Me, goes together with the Sennheiser PC333D), on the back USB ports, i get no sound at all, and that witht he cause that when i try to open the recording or playback device properties, i get a message saying the shared dll shell32 has crashed.
when i plug in at the front i don't get that message. and i have sound, but... it's anoying to have to waste 1 of my 2 functional front usb's (2/4 are USB 3.0 and unable to connect them on the SLI edition).

Well Matt, they did, but now all of a sudden they seem to work fine. It was the top two USB 2.0 ports that did it, where the 3.0 ports seemed fine. Very odd.

Can you disconnect the USB headers and try again? Do other devices work on these ports?

ok: update.
so i went and connected the external USB soundcard to the back side, and for a second it seemed like it was going to work this time, since windows recognized it as a HID device without any errors.
then i had to reboot. however whenever the headset is connected to the backpane: the computer just hangs on "shutting down"
the circle keeps spinning and everything but it doesn't move from there (i waited 15 mins, before doing reset).
then upon logging in i had sound, and as soon as i touched the speaker icon in the systraybar to try and configure my sound settings (my microphone instead of the build in webcam mic (aka disable the webcam mic, and set mine as standard), it hung (the sound window)
when trying to close it i got the message: "windows shell common DLL stopped working" after that:
- no more sound
- youtube not working either
- nothing that uses shockwave flash
the first time i get messages with: the following plug-in is unresponsive: shockwave flash , do you want to stop it.
after that i get "unknown" instead of "shockwave flash"
swapping the soundcard back to the front panel and rebooting.

Well it's in my city, and according to UPS tracking it is ready for dispatch, which from prior experience that usually means I get it the next day. Fingers crossed! [EDIT] BIOS chip arrived, installing Windows now! Huzzah!  [EDIT 2] Pretty much all up and running. Gotta get the essentials installed now, like AV/Chrome/PS3mediaserver/etc. Load some games and get the RAM running up to 2133. Got that SAS Controller thing that some others were talking about, but I'm not so fussed.

As an update, my system seems to be running fine now, done some super pi, played some games, no crashes or freezes yet, and all USB ports seem to work now... This mobo does win my nomination for problematic build of the month though, considering the OOTB issues. But as always, EVGA does win on customer support, i doubt i could have gotten this much help from Asus or any of the other manufacturers. Thansk again to NickB ,MatthewH and Rjohnson for helping me figure stuff out

Got most things up and running now. Except I can't get Windows to "see" my HDD's, it's only reading my OS Drive (SSD) and my DVD drive.
I can see the drive in BIOS.
Any suggestions?

Hello Macros, You do not mention how you are looking for the drive, or whether or not it is partitioned and formatted? Have you tried looking for it via diskmgmt.msc? If it is partitioned and formatted, maybe you need to assign a drive letter for it, all of which can be done in that application. I hope this helps.

I just received my X79 SLI today, and behold I have the bios issue also, and I'm sure I'll need a replacement. I sent an e-mail to Matt? And registered it. I'm so bummed. I even read up as much as I could before I bought it. Geez. I'm slippin these days.

Yeah, I was saying somewhere else (I think on their Facebook page) that I hope they start shipping out boards with the 34 BIOS and have like Revision 2 or something like that on the box so people know they are going to get a board that works straight away.

How do you turn off the splash screen so I can see the full boot? Tried disable the three options the one guy said (launch pxe oprom, etc) but that didn't work either. I am assuming that people have only gotten past this by getting the new chip...

Hello!
I had the problem with the bad BIOS - Chip on my X79 FTW too. After installing the new one EVGA-Europe sent me I was able to install Win7 without any problems. But now Windows freezes every time I start the Computer. Sometimes after 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Sometimes I have to push the reset button but now and then the computer makes a restart by itself. I also tried to use only 3, 2 and one memory stick but nothing seems to change. I already checked my RAM with memtest but no errors occurred. I have 4x4GB Mushkin Essential Series RAM installed. When running Windows in Save Mode there seems to be no problem. Did anyone experience the same problem?
My system:
Core I7 3930K
Corsair H80 Cooler
EVGA X79 FTW
4x4 GB Mushkin Essential Series
EVGA GTX 280 SC
Corsair HX1000
WD160 GB HDD 2x in RAID0

Try turning off all C-states (C1E,C3,C6,C7) in CPU Power Management section. This is a problem I havent been able to overcome. Post back if it helps or not.

Did you install all of the chipset drivers from the CD provided with the motherboard? Reinstall them again and see if this issue continues. I'd like the part number of your memory please. Christus

Your memory does not appear to have an XMS profile so you will need to set all of your memory timings manually. Do not exceed 1333MHZ. Christus
