I just bought 4 gb (2x2gb) of ddr3 2000 pc16000 memory and I need to overclock it on my nforce 790i ultra sli board. Right now its set to 1333 from some previous ram I had installed and I have no idea what I'm doing here. I want it to overclock to 2000 as thats the maximum the board supports for overclocking so what do I need to do exactly? I don't want to break anything or cause overheating issues. My case has 2 very large 250mm fans on the side which hit the graphics card, processor, ram basically everything. So should I be ok with overclocking it to 2000? The ram has some nice heat spreader on it. Here is my case: http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16811103019 You can see 2 large fans, it also has a rear 120m exhaust fan and a 200mm top intake fan. Here is my ram: http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820226132 My full system specs: evga nvidia gtx 480 4 gb ddr3 2000 pc16000 intel core 2 duo wolfdale dualcore 3.0 ghz evga nforce 790i ultra sli 950 watt coolmax Soon I will also need help overclocking the qx9650 core 2 extreme that I purchased.

The very first thing that you need to be aware of is....DO NOT run your RAM MHz faster than your CPU MHz. If you run your RAM at 2000MHz then, you will need to run your CPU also at 2000MHz. You want to run them matched at the same speed...called "Linked and Synced." If you run them mis-matched...whichever one is slowest is going to create a bottle-neck in their communication of data which, could cause corruption. It is not so bad if the RAM is slower than the CPU but, if the RAM has to wait on the CPU, that's were big problems can arise. Also, it is not wise to just immediately throw a high OC on your system. You should start low and slowly work your OC up...performing proper tests and monitoring temps. all along the way to see how your chip and board are reacting to the higher voltages required to achieve the OC.

Ok so I got my qx9650 cpu to 4.0 ghz. Set to linked and synced FSB at 1333 and the multiplier at 12x But I'd really like to get my ram faster than that since its actually 2000mhz ram and the board supports up to 2000 but you have to overclock to achieve those settings. I keep getting system automatic resets as soon as windows is loaded or a blue screen. Could it be my voltage settings? Any suggestions here?

Did you change voltages at all? Can you be more specific on the voltages you're using?

I'm sorry, I'm posting this in 2 different forums. (egg expert and evga) kinda slow on replys. The above settings seemed to be stable in windows only and when i attempted to play games for more than a few mins (city of heroes) the game or system would lock up or blue screen. I reset everything to default after 4 crashes and am now on auto voltages. but I did have the core set to 1.40 volt fsb 1.20 volt memory 1.65volt and I can't remember the others right now.

2000MHz RAM running at 2000MHz is not OC'd...it would be running at rated spex. The main problem is (and I apologize for not noticing and informing you in my first post) that RAM is probably not going to function properly on the 790i MoBo. Go to that page you linked for it above and read what it says in the Features section. Sorry, but you bought the wrong RAM. It pays to read ALL provided info. before making a purchase.

According to the EVGA tech I could buy 2000mhz ram and use it but I would not be able to get those speeds without overclocking that ram as it would detect and run it at a slower speed. It was to my understanding that I had purchased the correct ram in that retrospect. Its 240 pin, ddr3 it meets or exceeds the 1333/1600OC/2000OC. I thought that was all there was to it? So can I atleast do some form of overclocking with this ram or just the cpu? For my limited time of stablity that 4.0 ghz seemed pretty amazing. Could you point me to some ram on newegg that I should look into instead? Perhaps they will allow me to RMA this ram due to compatability issues.

What he means is that it was designed to run on the 1156 platform, not the 790i. That's not to say that we can't get it working though. I personally have no experience with this platform, so I'll leave the explaining to others. I just thought I'd clarify. It's best to read every little detail about everything and make sure it matches up perfectly. Too many times have I already (I'm 16) bought something overpriced without looking at other specs and noticing I can't run it correctly. And again (sorry this is a major pet peeve of mine), you are not overclocking your RAM. Running it at 2000 MHz is it's rated speed. Underclocked<rated<overclocked. That specific RAM's rated timings are also really weird. I would start with it underclocked and try and balance out the timings. Usually the first three are the same...

I definately do not want to get into an argument over what someone else has told you....I must repeat what I said in the previous post. You bought 2000MHz RAM...that is what it's rated to run at. If you had 1333MHz RAM and were running it at say, 1600MHz then, you are OC'ing it. In my case, I have 1600MHz RAM running at 1828MHz so, I am OC'ing it. Your 2000MHz RAM running slower than 2000MHz is under-clocking it. I would definately return that RAM you bought and get your money back if, you can. You could play with it but, you'd just be wasting your time. That RAM was DESIGNED to be run on the new socket 1156 MoBo's and not a socket 775 board. It's rated voltage is 1.65v and the 790i requires 1.7v-2.0v rated RAM. You cannot crank the voltage up that high on that RAM without killing it. When you were running your CPU at 4GHz...what was your FSB, 1800MHz??? I'll bet your RAM was either at 1333MHz or 1066MHz?? On the 790i MoBo, you want to run them both at the same speed for best performance....it's called "Linked & Synced"...I am currently running at CPU FSB 1828MHz RAM 1828MHz. This is an OC for both. Yes, I can most certainly recommend the proper RAM to you. This is what I am running: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220285 or these also work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220407 If you are able to get either of those models I linked above...I'll be very happy to help you OC your system and get it running stable.

Thanks for the assistance, I'm going to look into getting a refund for now and purchasing one of those you mentioned in your two posts.

You are very welcome...I sure hope they help you out with a refund or at least an exchange. EDIT: And don't go and buy 8GB's (2 pairs) unless you REALLY NEED to run 8GB's....4GB's is alot easier on the system and to tune up. Also, if you do get the RAM....please post for assistance in the 7 series Forum....there are several of us on there regularly that can get you squared away.
