Hello all,

I just finished my first computer build in seven years today.  I'm a bit rusty at building computers and I want to make sure that I'm not over cooking something.  I was wondering if these temperatures I'm getting for both cards are normal.  I'm running two cards in SLI configuration with 2560 x 1440 resolution and the refresh rate set to 144hz.  I'm using the Acer XB270HU monitor which supports 4K resolution.  Both graphics cards are EVGA Geforce GTX 980ti ACX 2.0+ SC+ Superclocked.

My idle temps/surfing the web temps (in Celsius)  are as follows:

GPU1 63 degrees
GPU2 40 degrees
CPU 32 degrees.

The GPU1 idle temp seems a bit high to me...

The only game I have that seems to push the system and that is Grand Theft Auto 5.  After playing the game for an hour, here are my temps:

GPU1 79 degrees (1889 rpms on fans)
GPU2 79 degrees (1800 rpms on fans)
Cpu  53 degrees

Do these temps look normal?

I downloaded the EVGA PrecisionX program and set both fan speed on the cards to auto.  Since I've done that, the fans on both cards turn off when I exit out of the PrecisionX software to the desktop.  When I load up the PrecisionX program again, the fans on the cards turn on.  Is this normal?

I have not over clocked anything (I have no clue and have never overclocked anything before.....).

Here is my system specs.  Let me know if these temps are normal...

i7-5930K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.5ghz
EVGA X99 FTX mobo
Two EVGA Geforce GTX 980ti in SLI
G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 2400  32gb
NZXT Kraken x61 cpu water cooler
EVGA 120-G2-1300-XR 1300wartt power supply.
Acer XB270HU monitor
Win 8.1

looks okay are you using a custom fan profile in precision or afterburner

I just have both cards set to auto in the Precision software.  The cpu cooler is set to silent.  Is a CPU temp around 53-59 degrees too hot while gaming?

Nope...nice temps (the 53-59 degrees while gaming ones).  Make the fan profile to aggressive and it'll probably cut 5 or more degrees off of that...but add more noise of course.

Do you have the refresh rate set to 144 hz on the desktop in idle?  if so that's why the high idle temps I bet.  Turn it down to at least 120.

Yes if you close out of Precision X the fan profile will shut down...minimize it so it stays open and click the "Start Up" on the lower left of Precision X so it starts up when booting up if you like too.

The idle temp of card 1 seems high, but it's not really idle if you are using a 4k monitor.

79c max is great. 980 ti Vanilla cards get up to 84.... That is not in sli.

idle temp for card one is a little high set a more aggressive fan speed on it
it should be somewhat near the bottom when idle as for load on cpu how are you cooling it

It's because his resolution and refresh rate prevent the card from fully downclocking. You can either set higher idle fan speeds, or set the refresh rate to 120 at desktop.

Set an aggressive fan profile and you'll get your temps down by a few C's.  For idle, have you checked your clock speeds?  I just installed Windows 10 and if I have "Prefer Maximum Performance" set in the NVCP under Power Management Mode, my 980Ti's boost up to 1139MHz when I have MS Edge, Chrome, or Steam open (probably other apps too).  I'm about to post a thread on here to find a fix.

63C is hot at idle. Mine idles at 35C.

Again, it is because the card is not downclocking due to the 2560x1440 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. Set 120Hz at the desktop and the problem will be gone.

Set a fan profile with 30% fan speed and both cards should idle at 32-35 c. Load temps seem fine for default fan profile.

I am on a 1080p 144 hz monitor and my system idles at above temperatue with fans on. With fans off I get 45 c and cards do down clock to 135/450.

You are on 1920x1080, your cards should downclock... His should not downclock.

This may sound like a dumb question, but if I set my desktop screen refresh rate to 120hz, will GTA5 automatically go to 144hz with G-sync?

It should. If you set the refresh rate in GTAV to 144Hz, if I remember correctly you can. That is what I am doing. I set the desktop resolution to 120Hz. Nvidia control panel gives you the option to set games to play at the max refresh rate. Just set it up in the Nvidia control panel to run max refresh rate and you should be fine.

GPU1 is just sucking in extra heat from 2. Pretty standard.

Yeah, Nvidia has responded to this over the years. The main GPU is not downclocking all the way because Nvidia states that it cannot handle the high resolution and refresh rate while being fully downclocked. This issue used to be present for 120Hz monitors when they first came out.
