Howdy everyone!

Been five years since I built my X58 board, and the wife gave the green light for an upgrade!  So, here is what I am waiting to get int:

GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-Gaming G1
CORSAIR Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory X2
Intel Core i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150
CORSAIR AXi series AX1200i 1200W Digital ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM
WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM
Western Digital WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
ASUS DVD-Writer
Corsair Hydro Series H110i GT High Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 280mm
Corsair Air Series AF140 CO-9050017-RLED 140mm X2

What has come in:
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD
Corsair Vengeance Series C70 Gunmetal Black

Also ordered a Corsair H100i GTX cause i wasn't sure if I wanted the H100i or the H110i, but the H100i is still in the box waiting for me to decide.

Now, pics time!

So, the case is in along with the SSD.  The H110i with the corsair 140mm fans should be in Today.  Unfortunately, most of my build is coming from Newegg and UPS shows that it was never picked up by them (bought it three days ago).  Still working that one out.

whoop whoop, Congrats Nate. Hope you get the rest soon!

Forgot to mention earlier, when / if you mount fans on the bottom. I was only able to use 1 140 and 1 120 due to the power supply cables on my sons build

Ah, whoops:

Three of these:
EVGA GTX 970 SSC
04G-P4-3979-KB

I know I got them from Best Buy so they are missing the dual BIOS, but I got them for $200 a pop (with tax).  I couldn't say no to that.

That C70 case is very nice. Real CORSAIR case.
You will not use graphic cards for that build?

I have few suggestions and you can read something about that and than to decide.
First CORSAIR sad H110i GTX is their best performing CPU Cooler, I don't know why... Asetek made that model, and that's last model.
For me is nicer H110i GT by CoollT because nicer radiator and somehow connection between tubes and pump look better.
But I suppose people had little problems with installation and bending because of that connection and later H110i GTX go directly in pump.
You will see on their site and you can decide. I would ask CORSAIR what they think. Usually Asetek models were better and CoollT more problematic.
Both of them have CORSAIR Link build in and that's not problem.
For memory you can check GSkill Trident X 2400 2x 8GB F3-2400C10D-16GTX is about 110-115$.
4x4GB same model and speed is 125$.
That's memory in class with Dominator Platinum.
And 1200 P2 or 1000 P2 power supplies give you much better option for sleeve later and quality is same with AX1200i.
For 1-2 months later I would say 1000 T2 Titanium definitely, except if you need really 1200W.

That's my recommendation and you can read in that direction maybe you notice something better.
Check memory compatibility with board, experience of people, etc... GSkill Trident X is one of 2-3 best DDR3 kits.

Oh yea, I know the sheet says that.  I also am looking at them right now and the Dual BIOS switch it noticeably absent from all three of them, lol.

the classys have a different led for each bios / green for normal, amber for for OC and red for LN2
when I change the bios switch the leds change color to let me know the position of the switch

Scotty Mac bought two EVGA video boards with the dual BIOS perk and when he opened the boxes he noticed that the switch was missing on one of the boards. AWOL. He had to RMA to get another board. That is a nice looking case, BTW.

Thank ya!  Guess what, more stuff came in!

Side fans now installed:

Should mention that I also replaced the stock fans with my own Cougar fans (used three of the 4 that I have):

The third one:

But now decision time!

Which one to use and which one to return?  As much as I like having a 280mm over a 240mm, I love the fact that the tubes connect directly to the pump instead of joints like on the H110i.  For those that don't know, I had an H70 break on me five years ago and the pivot point where the pump connects to the pivot and lost two video cards (to Corsair's credit, they actually sent me a new unit and even paid for replacement cards).  Which leads me to my next question.  Why not just use air?  Between yall and me, I never even OCd the i7-950 that I am using right now and I have been running a H100 for 5 years!  Plus, although Corsair was amazing and how they handled my situation, I am still a little weary after that time (yes, I am aware of the irony where I have been running a H100 for 5 years with no issues).  So, I need to decide soon.  Which ever one I pick I am going to open, stick in a tub, power it up, and let the pump run all night to see if it will break.  The rest of my parts should be in tomorrow so I need to decide.

I would appreciate any input that yall have (no I will never do a custom water loop, so please don't suggest it, lol).  Know that your thoughts will help me greatly in deciding what to do.

Re: New Z97 Build! 2015/07/02 17:33:32 (permalink)
Well, I think I decided.  Although the H110i GT is larger than the H100i GTX, the combination of the tubs being directly connected to the pump versus being on pivots, the overall look of the heatsink/pump, and the better position of the Corsair link connection, I am going to go with the H110i GTX.  That is, unless anyone has any convincing ideas why I shouldn't.  As I mentioned before, my previous experience with leaking at the junction point makes the one without those pivot elbows the choice for me.  Hopefully the rest of my parts come in tomorrow so I can add more pics!

Yep, going to take an old BFG power supply I got at a garage sale with a Power supply tester to keep the PSU going, hook up the GTX and let it run tonight.  Hopefully, if there are any manufacturing defects, they will be apparent tonight.

Re: New Z97 Build! 2015/07/02 19:39:21 (permalink)
Ok, so got the H100i up and running:

So, pump is pumping.  Has a little hum coming from the pump, but that is the same as my H100, so not alarmed.  I'm not the biggest fan of how the directions say to set up the fans (prefer to put them between the radiator and the case instead of just on the inside).

Might only run it for an hour or so, then put it away till tomorrow.  That should be enough testing.  That power supply is REAL old and one of the settings on the PSU tester is beeping at me, lol.

On a really positive note, looks like UPS finally updated the tracking and the rest of my parts will be in tomorrow!

Update: Hmmmm...moved it to a molex right off my main rig's power supply since the noise from the pump became quite audible.  Now, It doesn't even seem like it is pumping.  Will continue testing.

Update 2: Hooked up Corsair Link to my main ring and plugged it into the H100i (it's not on a CPU, it's just chillin in a tupperware container in case it leaks).  The fans work just fine from the H100i connector and Corsair Link shows them working just fine.  However, corsair link shows the pump doing 0 atm.  Maybe because the H100i GTX cooler temp is 28C?  But, it was pumping just fine earlier before I disconnected it and moved it to a molex in my current system.  Not sure what else to do here.

So, the pump appears to be not working.  Not sure what happened, but this is why I test items like this Corsair H100i GTX not seated on a CPU to see if there will be any failures.  I'll give it another shot in the morning, but I really don't want to put this into my new computer if the pump won't even work.  I mean, I could set it in there and maybe the heat from the CPU will get it going, but I don't want to risk it.  Looks like I just might have to use the H110i GT after all.

UPDATE:  Well, there is a Plan B.  Best Buy just started selling the H100i GTX.  I get get them to price match, eat the tax, and get a replacement quick.  Thoughts there as well?

Re: New Z97 Build! 2015/07/03 04:45:15 (permalink)
Ok, woke up this morning and plugged the H100i GTX back in and also attached the fans to the radiator......fans run, but don't idle and there is still no sound or flow coming out of the pump (I have an old H100 in my current rig so I know how the pump is supposed to sound/feel and I am getting nothing).  PSU tester shows a solid 12V going to the molex.  The H100i GTX is currently not in a case or on a mobo; it is just sitting outside the case on an ant-static mat.

I don't get it, it was working when I first started testing it, then I turned the PSU off then back on and the pump appears to have stopped working.  I have done this on several different generations of Corsair AIO coolers, and this is a first.  Even if I can get it working, I don't think I can trust it to run long-term.

My H80i fails on a regular basis. I don't think it's ever gone more than two months without needing to be RMA'd. That's why I went with Swiftech's H220 for my main rig and that failed after 3 months but has been going strong for about 6 months now after the RMA. If your H100i is going to fail then this is the time to do it before you have it installed on a fresh CPU.

Yea, that is why I test it the way I do.  So, either I can go get one from Best Buy now and price match it with Newegg, or throw the stock cooler on there until I get a new H100i GTX from Newegg (they won't ship it till Monday).

I'd wait for NewEgg unless you want a spare AIO laying around for inventory. What I don't understand is that others have been using their H80i for years and never had a problem. I'm just lucky I guess.

Oh, either way I'm returning the H100i GTX to Amazon, so I won't have an extra AIO laying around.  But right now, Newegg has it cheaper than Amazon.  So, when I return it, I will be ordering instead from Newegg or Best Buy.  With Best Buy, I can get it now and just eat the tax, or I can wait for Newegg.

BTW, UPS finally updated the tracking and everything else will be in Today.  So, time to decide what to do next.  Either go stock and order a new one for cheaper on Newegg versus Amazon, or just go to Best Buy and get it installed today.

OR, I still have the H110i GT that I was planning on returning since I was going with the H100i GTX.  However, I don't like the joints on the H110i GT.

Corsair warranty used to guarantee against leaks and they would pay for any damaged parts. Unless things have changed, this is a very good warranty. My Swiftech warranty expressly excludes any damage from a coolant leak but at least their pumps work.

install the 110, return the 100
also was gonna to mention earlier, the front panel of that case pops right off and you can install those 140's in front of the HD cage, better air flow (intake)

also was gonna to mention earlier, the front panel of that case pops right off and you can install those 140's in front of the HD cage, better air flow (intake)

Yea, tried putting in front fans but the front wouldn't fit on there.  I will need thinner fans.  Also, I wish the tubes made a direct connection like on the H100i GTX.....

I'm also considering just putting the stock fan on till I want to OC and just wait for the H110i HTX to come out......or get an awesome air cooler later, lol. The stock fan should work for now till I decide, right?

Ok, everything came in, will post pictures soon.  About to seat the CPU, but not sure if I will install the H110i GT or throw the stock fan on.  I don't plan on doing any OC for a while, so I could wait for the H110i GTX to come out instead.

Picture Time!

New PSU on my tester:

Results look good:

Installed that sucker!

Now, for the other goodies!

So pretty....

Got that sucker installed with the hard drives/SSD/Memory:

Processor Installed!  Stock fan for now, looking at my options later.

Wait, are those three EVGA GTX 970s?

Woop!  Now I'm cooking.  Last thing to do is decide what to do about the CPU (debating my cooling choices since I had to return my defective H100i GTX and I don't like the H110i GT.

Looks good.

Thanks!  So, the H100i GTX is sent back to Amazon, and I finally caved:

I'll let it run for a bit tonight, then make sure it comes back on tomorrow.  Then install the H110i GT.  I will say, the silent mode on this thing is AWESOME!  Although the H100i GTX did die on me, the pump noise it made was way louder than this one is.  Now, I need to see what it takes to take the old thermal paste off from the stock Intel heatsink.  I'm gonna leave the factory TIM on the H110i GT (although it will get on parts of the processor bracket, as well).
