By late Summer I should be ordering components for my Mini-ITX build.

To this point, these are the parts I'm getting:
*Phanteks Mini-ITX Evolv case
*Asus Z170I Pro Gaming MB
*i7-6700k cpu
*Corsair or GSkill Trident memory (2x8GB, DDR4000)
*EVGA nVidia 1080 (not sure which one yet)
*EVGA 650GS P2 PS
*Samsung or Crucial 1TB SSD
*Corsair or Swiftech AIO CPU water cooler w/rad exiting air out the top of the case

I think I should get a blower-style 1080 for this case. Will the upcoming 'Classified' 1080 be that style of card?

New rig being assembled:
Asus Hero XI | 9900K | EK custom CPU loop | 2080ti FTW3 (Finally...) | Phanteks Evolv X case | Seasonic Titanium 850 | CableMods (red/black)

No, only founders edition and base model will have blower style coolers. The base model is not out yet either. You could wait for hybrid though.

Stay the hell away from the Phanteks Evolve ITX. Terrible case with terrible temps for both CPU if you use a AiO closed loop and GPU temps are terrible as well.
The 250D is one of the best and I can recommend it.

I just finished my build using the evolv itx, h100i v2, and 6700k. Im still waiting on my 1070, i got the blower fan founders edition because initial testing with prime 95 was not very reassuring. My motherboard heated up to the point that the system was crashing and this was without a gpu. I could only imagine what temps would be like with a card spewing hot air inside.

Although i have to point out that this initial testing was done without any case fan running. I have 3 corsair af140s, 2 in front and 1 at rear but i did not have the necessary power connectors for them.

My experience with the case was with a non-blower style gpu, and load temps on the CPU were consistently 10-15c higher than my 250D.
A reference blower card will probably be better but I believe the roof design keeps hot air from escaping.

If it will fit, look into an EK Predator with quick connects. You can cool the cpu and gpu with it.

There have been at least 2 that I know of 'favorable' YouTube reviews of this case, , one by Dimitry of the 'Hardware Canucks' tech site, and another by I believe 'Linus'(?) (guy w/ the aggravating voice), and another one by Ari Altman at the 'TechBuyerGuru' website...  Sorry that your experience w/ that case has not been good, but it seems that the general consensus is that it is an excellent Mini-ITX case.

If you prefer air cooling on a gpu EVGA has a blower style card coming. It's a reference PCB with a proprietary shroud and is $90 less than the FE card.

Cool story. Terrible closed loop CPU temps and that's a fact.

so what's the best small case that will take a non blower card? I'd like to build something small but I don't want temp problems. Right now I have a 650D and it is so empty. I only run one SSD and a video card. I don't need or want so much room.

At first I wanted a non-blower 1080 for my mini-ITX NCASE M1 as well, but I ended up being satisfied with a 1070 Founder's Edition. It seems that the 92c temperature limit pretty much prevents any overheating, because it downclocks way before that.

Down clocking isnt a cool bonus, it's something to avoid.
Raise the temp limit so it never happens happens and use a custom fan profile to keep it around 80c or lower.
