At Embedded World 2024 the Taiwanese company IBASE has showcased an upcoming Intel LGA-1851 motherboard. This motherboard will be used with Intel Meteor Lake processor for embedded systems, but its CPU socket will also be used with Intel’s next-generation motherboards.

Computerbase.de has gotten a close look at this new motherboard, and they have confirmed that LGA-1851 is the same size as Intel’s existing LGA-1700 socket. That said, this socket has 151 additional pins and an adjusted CPU locking system. As such, this socket is incompatible with LGA-1700 CPUs, both physically and functionally.

With Intel’s new socket being the same size as its predecessor, all LGA-1700 compatible CPU coolers are likely to support Intel’s new socket. In fact, Arctic Cooling confirmed last year that all of their LGA-1700 CPU coolers are LGA-1851 compatible. This may be true for all LGA-1700 CPU coolers.

Intel will be using LGA-1851 on their upcoming 800-series desktop motherboards. These motherboards will arrive alongside Intel’s Arrow Lake desktop processors later this year. These CPUs will likely arrive as Intel Ultra 200 series processors.

This is what I don't like about Intel processors. Every couple of years you have to change the motherboard as well as the processor.

Look at it this way RJ.  For those that feel this compulsion to buy a new CPU that often probably want a new motherboard with all the latest tech on it anyway.

Hard to tell if the locking system retaining cover goes all the way around the CPU rather than just having the tabs at the sides. I hope it does - that bowing effect on the CPU IHS was a problem in some cases. Good news that most heatsinks will still be compatible.

And yes, frustrating having to upgrade motherboards so often because of socket changes, but with more pins there will presumably be improved performance - so I assume it was necessary.

Usually the extra pins are power related

OK but AMD is making a new chipset motherboard for next gen CPUs (probably announcing these at Computex 2024) without having to change the CPU.
