I've got my replacement card from EVGA today and there is coil whine again. Not as loud as my old one, but still hearable. Now i think about to run the Heavens Benchmark a few nights and maybe the coil whine gets better. Or should i do a RMA again? I don't know... >_<

If you pinpoint that it's your 970 I would definitely run Heaven for at least a couple days or do some gaming and see if it gets better with time before I did another RMA.

Yes, it's definitely the GTX 970. But i have forgotten to write, that the coil whine is even under Windows. The noise comes every ~30 seconds for about a secound while my PC is in idle....:(
I dont't know if a "burn in" would help in this case...

Yeah, i will do it, i start this night with the "burn in". I have also contacted the EVGA support and told them, my new card has also coil whine and i will try it with Heavens Benchmark for a few nights. But at the moment it seems to me, that the noise is getting stronger ._.

I have run the Heavens Benchmark for 12h without a pause, but nothing changed with the noise yet.

My card also makes a buzzing noise (970 acx 2.0).  I returned an MSI card that did the same thing - not sure if I should return this one and try for another evga or just wait for other brands to get abck in stock.

You could have this coil whine problem with every brand (with bad luck). Asus, EVGA, MSI, Palit, Gigabyte, etc.; they all have problems with coil whine.

I'm on my second 970 FTW and both have had this issue.  The noises tend to be loud enough that I can hear them over the games I'm playing!

Not sure if I should just get use to it as I've heard this is an issue with 970s in general, or if to try a different brand.

I have called with the EVGA germany support on friday and they told me, that i will get a new card again and now they check it before they send it to me. The EVGA employee told me this extreme coil whine is not normal and they have many RMAs at the moment. They even changed the manufacturer of the coils and cards with the new coils have very very less problems with coil whine. But i don't know, if i got cards with the new coils.

I think my card came in with a bigger shipment at my local micro center - has me worried that, if mine is bad, the rest will be too. I'm heading home today to see if running valley all weekend helped , but I doubt it will.

My card is making that exact same sound on benchmarks. I have a 970 ACX 2.0 FTW revision A1. I don't want to get rid of it, because i very much like it. The fans are supper quiet and it destroys every game I run and the G-sync is a modern marvel. If the coil whine wasn't there, this would be one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I hear and with other manufacturers owners complain more on GTX970 coil whine than GTX980.

I'm gonna try a third 970 FTW, seems logical as I've got a backplate order in process.
Should the third produce any annoying noises I think I'll be contacting EVGA directly.

Re: New Gtx 970 FTW Electrical Buzzing Noise, plz help! 2014/11/09 11:04:13 (permalink)
I fitted my FTW today and noticed the same buzzing but is very faint, I have to put ear to back of case to hear it, I will quote my full post from another forum here.

"ok I done tests.

gtx 760 temp - fan speed

desktop 27 43%
heaven extreme 70 62%
valley custom 70 60%

gtx 970 temp - fan speed
desktop 31 0%
heaven extreme 73 29%
valley custom 73 29%

notes - the 970 may not drop back to 31 after its been put under load due to idle cpu, temp is still dropping a few mins after I killed bench, and is current 45C, fans start quite and stop early, the threshold for fans seems over 60C.

on noise there is no doubt the gtx 970 is quieter, the fan speed under load is pretty low and less than the 760 is at idle. Overall very happy, if I mute sound and stay in my chair, I still cannot hear anything, but if I put ear to back of case I can hear what seems like a very faint buzzing sound, coil whine? I do not hear it when sat in my chair at front of pc.

Thumbs up from me. I think I will set a 20-30% fan speed tho even when idle.

As I finished writing this up temps is down to 41C."

Coil whine can be produce sometimes under one system but in some other to work completely without noise.
Not always, but in some cases yes.
If you don't hear near case that's probably nothing disturbing than.
But sometimes very loud, weird and funny buzz noise came from hardware.

Mine does make a noise as I said, but it doesnt bother me, I have to go to the back of the case to hear it.

Also now I set my fans to 20% on idle and its still effectively silent as is less than other fans, brilliant card.

Pleasantly surprised - I ran Unigine Valley for 48 hours and I have to say, the buzzing is significantly quieter.  It is still there, but I don't think it's as jarring anymore.  I'll test games tonight, but even my most quiet (and notorious) offender, Ethan Carter, is much better in the problem areas I had.

Please post your results after some games!

Mine seem to not whine when I start a game but the whine starts after a couple of minutes after gaming.  Seem to get quieter with time so "good news" hahah

Interesting - I played through the rest of Ethan Carter last night (~3 hours) and have played some Borderlands 2 today - all seems to be fine.  I didn't do any measurement before I ran Valley - before I could hear the buzzing from my couch while playing games, but now I can't hear it over the fans.  The buzzing kicks on immediately for me when I start a game, it's just gotten much more mild.

I noticed it's almost always the loudest when I am looking into/standing in a light source.  I can just turn the camera from a patch of light to a shaded area and the buzzing will completely stop.

guys do you also get buzzing sound through your headphones?

Could you help me test a problem of my own with my gtx970 please?
When u have coil whine, lower your windows volume level to minimum and try to hear through good quality headphones if there's any interference/noise in you headphone that is similiar to the physical sound of the coil whine please.

Cheers for the help!
And I hope your issues will be solved.

Well, I found a solution. My card producing the exact same noise as OP's card, and I would only notice it in certain games or applications. (The Witcher was by far the worst I found, even in the intro video it was unbearable)

Anyways, after some Googling, I heard that some people were having that problem whenever their FPS went above 160~, and that limiting it would fix the problem with other cards.

So, out of curiosity I went into the NVIDIA control panel and enabled V-Sync globally.

Sure enough, the whine was gone instantly, and the card is now running quieter than ever.

---
tldr: vsync fixes it for me.

Solved
The buzzing I had after installing my 980 would vary like I could hear the inner workings of the computer.
"eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzrrrrrrrrrrrrrrzzzzzzeeeeeeeeee" etc. I solved the problem by removing the X-Fi Titanium sound card and switching to the Realtek on board sound. Buzz gone!

I'm not even sure if this is coil whine. It sounds more deep and buzzing, and the sound doesnt change when moving in games, like typical whine does.

Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/w...0&feature=youtu.be

Did yours sound similar GomJabbar, or higher pitched? How fast does it go away?

Exact same but louder on mine.  I bought the card early october (around the 8th) and as of today the 31st I can't hear it.
But YMMV cause I heard it can take months before it goes away.

Are you sure it goes away after a while? I have been burning my second GTX 970 for 48 hours nonstop with [link=mailto:folding@home]folding@home[/link] and heaven benchmark. The coil whine only got worse.

Does your 980 also have coil whine or just the 970?

I returned my 980 to Newegg but they didn't have any eVGA 980 in stock so they refunded me. I don't feel like paying 629 for a reference 980 so I picked up a MSI 970. I went though 3 cards (one 980 and two 970s) and they all had coil whine. The 980 had the loudest whine but none of them will whine if I limit the FPS to 120 but they all whined at FPS above 200. I have been using nvidia card since 07 and this is the first time EVER I experience coil whine. I tested my old eVGA 680 FTW and it is silent. I am really disappointing with nVidia. As far as I know, all brands 970/980 suffer from coil whine so it is not eVGA's fault. I am sticking with my onboard video for now since I sold my 680 for the 9xx series and if coil whine doesn't improve with the future model, I am buying a xbox and leaving gaming pc forever.

I've been through 2 MSI Gaming 970's and 2 EVGA 980 FTWs and all 4 of the cards had coil wine at some point.  Both 980's start to wine around 200fps during benchmarks and the 970's around 150fps.  I use my 980 FTW now and have my FPS limited to 144fps in rivia tuner for everything but benching and I have never hear it once unless i uncapped the fps and run benchmarks.  BTW It's just the power humming thru the circuits and it causes no problems what so ever.  The older series GPUs used different architecture which is why you hardly heard of the issue.  I guess some are getting the noise in the 60-120 fps range and i'm sure that's not acceptable and a manufacturing defect.  Well at least you will never have to worry about coil wine on your xbox as you will be playing games at 30fps which requires no power at all lol.
