I have a gtx 980 SC that I bought a month ago.  Borrowed a friend's other brand 980 to do SLI benchmarks but cannot get them to SLI.
A message keeps coming up saying to install an SLI bridge.  Both cards are working fine according to device manager.
Here is what I've tried.
1. Remove 980 SLI and reinstall 780 Ti SLI.  780 Ti SLI works flawless.
2. Update to very latest Asus bios and reset cmos by removing battery for 15 mins and jumping pins.
3. Reinstalled windows 8.1 fresh.
4. Tried 3 different SLI bridges all of which work fine with my 780 Ti SLI.
5. Both 980 cards work flawless on their own.  The evga one is a better overclocker though.
6. Tried and retried every driver available for the gtx 980.

I contacted evga support for more help.  They asked me to test in another system.  So I tore down my rig.  Installed a Maximum V gene board with a 2500k and used a Crucial m4 and did a clean install of Windows 7.  Problem still exists.
Report back my finding to evga support.  Now they are suggesting my motherboard is still the problem even though I just duplicated the issue on another board.  I also cannot find a single person having the same issue I am between Geforce forums, here and overclock.net.  Techpowerup even did their 980 SLI review on a Maximus Hero Vi, exact same board as me and had no problems.

I'm down to the only thing left to try may be buying another card to see if one card has dead SLI fingers.  I'm far more inclined to just return the 980 and eat the restocking fee after the hours and hours I've wasted.

Anybody have anything else to try here that I've missed?

Based upon your troubleshooting methodology, I would say that's the next logical action.

I've heard stories of some cards not willing to SLI with another manufacturers card because of Bios incompatibilities but I've never tried it. I decided if I was ever going to try and SLI two cards of differing tech or manufacturer, I would flash the superior card with the inferior cards bios. I don't recommend doing this unless you own both cards though.

It's too bad your friend can't pick up another card, because there's just as great a chance that the issue actually lies with his 980.
Look closely for any signs of physical damage on both cards.
If nothing else as the last troubleshooting measure, I'd say send back the 980 SC and pick up the 980 of his brand.

Decided to buy a 980 acx sc to go with the 980 sc reference.  Asked evga first if they will work in SLI together and was told yes.
If that doesn't work then I'll replace the motherboard.

Thank you so very much Sajin.
I haven't gotten much testing done but it appears your solution was the right one.
Differing device ID was causing the issue.
