Hey everyone , I've been researching quite alot about audio and cant seem to find a sound card that suits me.
I Have a Logitech Z5500 and just ordered the Senneheiser PC360 Headset and I basically want 3d positioning for
the headset and either 5.1 via analog or if better the Optical cable for the Logitech Z5500 Speaker System.
Now I heard that some games cant support the Optical cable to full 5.1 and it just upconverts it using dobly
prologic II technology. So what is a really kick ass sound card that will have DTS encoding for my Logitech Z5500
Speaker system (5.1) and 3D Audio Positioning for my recently purchased Senneheiser PC360 Headset? Also note
that I have the X58 Classified E760 and am planning on adding a second Evga 480 so the only available slot I will
have is the very lowest of the motherboard.

Re:Need help with buying a new sound card 2011/03/26 23:04:46 (permalink)
So the necessary requirements I would need on the sound card would be as follows.
1)3D Positioning or Dolby Headphone technology for the headset.
2)Dolby DTS Encoding and Dolby Digital Live.
3)Atleast 5.1 Support Via analog cables and optical would be nice to have to test and see which works better.
Also if there is any new sound cards coming out that are worth the wait please let me know as all i could find this
year at ces 2011 is the sound blaster recon 3d external thing that you plug your headset into but then my speakers
dont get a sound card :( . That or the Astrogaming Mixamp would basically serve as the same function except the
Recon does 3D positioning and the Mix amp upconverts stereo to 5.1 via Prologic II technology which fakes 5.1 so
    its not all that...

This was the only sound card that I chose as a candidate as I hear all the sound blaster products are glitchier now a days.

I also should have mentioned that I am a hardcore gamer and that is what I mainly use my pc for so definently need a sound card that is compatible with most games and is more of a gamer oriented sound card.

I had the Auzen Forte and wasn't all that impressed with it...
Go for the Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Titanium Pro (not Champion) but wait for it to have a sale down to below $100. Happens once a month or so these days.

Not sure why you said "not Champion", but I have that card and it works great. When on sale the Champion can be had for around $120-$130.

It's just my recommendation to save some money and get the Pro, whilst not having extra cable clutter going toward the front drive bays

You’re gonna need a card with a built in amp to get the best out of those head phones. I'd recommend getting a ASUS Xonar Essence ST or STX, depending if you wanna go PCI or PCI-E. It has a digital SpDif out thing so you can do 5.1 to the z5500s but you're probably gonna be using those 360's mostly for gaming i would assume. It'll be a few extra bucks over an x-fi chip but it'll be worth it for audio quality goodness in your ears. I've been rocking the Xonar Xense, which is a slightly lesser version w/ the PC350 headphones and my gaming experience and enjoyment has really improved. Also the whole x-fi being better for gaming isn't really true anymore. No new games really use the EAX 5.0 and the Asus Xonar chips have a good emulation mode. Never had any issues with games and I've even played my old PC copy of FF8 with no issues. Just my 3 cents...

I have the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme (got it on sale for $30) and it sounds way better than the onboard. I dont really see what the difference is between the cards if they all use the same chip.

You guys are awesome! Thanks for the input.

I was going to buy the Creative sound blaster xifi which was marked from 200 to 150 and the 130 card down to 100 but I've been hearing from alot of people that they have been having driver issues with windows 7. I dont want to get a sound card that is gonna cause me more problems then its worth thats why i was kinda waiting for the new sound cards to come out. These came out in 07-08 so I was thinking that maybe just maybe they will have a new lineup but the only thing announced at CES was the sound blaster recon which is an external xifi chip just for headsets... Keep the good suggestions coming guys thanks again!

Lies.  No problems here since Day 1 with my driver installation.  I really don't believe that (figure of speech).  How difficult can it really be?

It was more a problem with the Audigy 2 ZS and Vista/7 drivers as Vista/7 would disable some features that normally worked in XP.  But, with the X-Fi and Windows 7 (and I assume with Vista), it was a breeze.  Also, no problems using the Auto Update feature in the drivers either.

Note: Since Day 1, I have also disabled onboard sound and after new motherboard BIOS' have been installed.

I've used the Asus Xonar Essense ST and the HT Omega Claro+, both really good cards.  I upgraded to the Asus card for the built in amp.

Both are rather expensive.  But definitely an improvement over onboard.  They make low end speakers and midrange headphones sound much better.

I went with pci cards because I didn't want to take bandwidth away from my gpus.  If you ever plan on going sli that's definitely something to think about.  Especially if you already a 1xPCI-E add on card.

    Good luck.

I never had a problem using Creative with Windows 7. Just make sure the software from the disc is installed first, then do your updates at Creatives website.

You might want to look at HT Omega Claro HALO edition.
The built-in HI-FI Headphone Amplifier should make the PC 360 headset sound better.

Does anyone know of any new sound cards coming out? All these cards came out around the 2007 mark and one would think they would have a newer model after 4 years... Like creative's titanium HD that came out a few months ago. I would buy that but it is lacking the connections for my Z5500 but accomadates my headset perfectly.

The Halo XT has SPIF in/out and an accessory card for 5.1 analog jacks all for the cool price of $250.

It may be cheaper to go with an Auzentech X-Fi Forte 7.1 ($150) or one of the Creative X-Fi Titanium models.

Im really leaning towards the Champion series. I would put the extra bay under my cdrom even though my HAF X has extra audio inputs above the cdrom so it would probably look a bit goofy. Although im not too happy about adding more wires I would hopefully try to drag em thru the harddrive bays so they dont disrupt airflow too much. Let me ask this what if Im gaming an fps through my Senneheiser PC360 and then want to switch over to Starcraft 2 which ill most likley play thru my speakers listening to friends in vent thru speakers as well. Do I have to unplug the mic everytime from the back of the pc or can I just enable and disable the headset or speakers? Thanks!

Plugging in the Mic disconnects your speakers until you unhook them again. With my Champion Series, I have the sound card control in the front bay of my case. I can just plug and unplug it in the front of the case.

What about the wires connecting the actual sound card to the bay at the front of the computer? What wires are required from sound card to the bay and also a power?

With the Asus and HT Omega cards you can switch between analog outputs in the audio control center, no need to plug and unplug.

In the following link, click the pic farthest right, and it's those 2 wires on the bottom left and right:>  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102021

Each time you click on the pic, it zooms closer. So you can see the wires better.

I would definently appreciate that but the only thing that I've read that the Halo Claro plus was lacking is the full 3D support for headphones for gaming. It also seems to be a bit more marketed towards pro audio and not so much gaming. Otherwise I was really leaning towards the Claro Plus earlier.

So both of those wires get hooked up from the soundcard to the drive bay right? 2 Wires both output from soundcard and input to drivebay?
