Hi was not aimed at him personally - however I have seen threads where people start by saying they have $30000 dollars to spend on the very best and never leads to know where. Of course lets give Andrew the benefit of doubt as there are some serious buyers out there.

I personally enjoy following this thread because even though I could never afford the top of the line computers, it is very informative as to what is out there/what compares to what, etc.

I am doing a build similair to the OP, but I am using a DD tower 29. I already have my SR-2 and I was going to buy two 5680's this week. What is to say that the 5690 is going to come out anytime soon or even at all. I would love to see someone with some valid proof and I would gladly wait.

I could swear I've read a thread or two from someone around here that has the 5690 (maybe ES's) and was going to run them on their SR-2.

[Edit]  found the thread, it was Cocore that has a set...read on down into this thread because people thought he was mis-typing and meant 5680's but he wasn't.

It would be a shame to house this caliber of a rig in a MM case.  Especially if its going to be air cooled.

+1...as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to this beholder MM looks very good to me.  Beyond the beauty/ugly aspect, I have never seen a case that can house as much as a MM Extended Ascension.  If you have a lot of gear, want to run dual PSU's, Rads, etc and need lots of cooling capability, a MM case can deliver.  Of course I'm just a little prejudiced...

Is this ram good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231359&cm_re=gskill_24gb-_-20-231-359-_-Product? I want to take advantage of newegg's 15% off ram today, so suggestions would be appreciated ASAP. Thanks!

lowfat

Even if there isn't a dual socket board available by the fall the 8-core Sandy Bridge CPU's should be available. And if they perform and clock like the LGA1155 versions they should be pretty comparable to a 12-core machine on an SR-2.

yes.. maybe and a year later there will be next cpu that will outperform this one.. and a year later,....
one thing i learned in the past 20 years of buying PCs for my work:
There is never the perfect time to buy. the moment you get your rig set up it is outdated. so, my advice - if you need a new machine NOW, check what´s within your budget and dont spent one minute what might be in a couple months. it´s not worth it :)

That is the problem with his thread though. He is trying to decide what to buy in 6-8 months from now.

I assume the developers are watching to the chess game between the cool CPU in socket 0 and the hotter CPU in socket 1.

What is the benefit of the ecp, if any?

The benefits of the ECP are different for various groups of computer users. For mainstream users, the ECP might only offer external switches to turn on or reset the computer. But for the computer tinker, the ECP also provides the convenience of diagnostic benefits. The CPU and PCIe jumpers and other resources can be made available externally on the computer case. So the function of each CPU, for example, can be tested individually or the post error codes can be easily viewed without opening the case.

In my opinion, the ECP is a desired item for the typical discerning EVGA buyer.

Switchable single-dual CPU rig
Mobo: EVGA SR-2 w/ BIOS A46 or A49 & Windows 7 (64-bit edition). CPU: Xeon 5620 @2.40-2.66 GHz (single mode) & @3.3-3.5 GHz (dual mode), air cooled by Intel BXSTS100C heat sink. Memory: 12x1 GB Kingston Triple Channel 1.5-V DDR3 @ 1066 MHz with 7-7-7-20 timing. Video card: MSI GTX 460. PSU: 950-Watt ABS Majesty 80 Plus Certified Gold. Disks: OCZ Vertex2 & WD Black 1 TB. Case: Home-made from wood & aluminum mesh with mobo mounted on MountainMod tray. Comment: Every watt saved reduces the electricity bill & need for additional cooling solutions

Cool! I would definitely want that!
I read in a thread that EVGA will send you the ECP if you ask, even though you bought the sr-2 a-2. Is that the case?

Hey, are we going to talk about cooling for this rig or did I miss that?

I wish my SR-2 A2 had the ECP. It's regrettable. If there is a way to get 1, I'd love to know how to.

We will be talking about cooling...
Cpu: Closed loop liquid. Corsair, CoolIT, or Koolance, whichever provides best performance  (where do I mount the radiator?)
Cooling for mountain mods extended ascension: 12 on top, horizon 10 back, trinity front, push pull config. Scythe 3000rpm fans (unless there is something with better performance and less noise.)
This fan controller: http://www.mountainmods.com/lamptron-fct-touch-fan-controller-black-p-622.html?osCsid=cg58c397pfi5og1tof2uu3kv57
I ordered so far:
RAM
MoBo
Case
Toolkit
Electrostatic wrist straps, foot straps, and mat.

I'm a strong believer in keeping radiators external. We can't buy Coolit stuff anymore, Corsair has the retail rights to all their stuff. Koolance has the best motherboard cooler for the SR-2 IMO. EK has the best CPU water blocks, but we are boycotting them till we hear they reconciled with Falcon. Graphics cooling and loop configuration is the real discussion. Lots of folks seem to prefer series loops to save money, but that is just passing on heat IMO.

Series has nothing to do w/ saving money.  It just doesn't offer any additional performance over parallel loops.

What do you mean external??????
Can I have a link to the best closed loop Koolance?
I do not need graphics cooling, especially with a $3000 gc.
