One 6-pin and one 8-pin.  So the TDP is between 250W and 300W.  The GTX 480's is 250W but when pushed in Furmark it can consume about 300W of power.

TDP isn't how much voltages it uses. It how much heat it generates... A lot of people forget that.
This card max draw is 300w 75+75+150, PCI-e slot. 6 pin and 8 pin connectors. My guess is that the card will be a consuming max of 275w. You have around 25watts for Overclocking, Meaning your overclock probably be cut in half.

The GTX470 TDP is 215w, Each heatpipe (8mm) can handle around 42.3 watts.
As you can see in this picture

The 470 heatsink has 5 heatpipes at 8mm each The cooler on the card is barely can handle the beast.

This card has the simaliar cooling setup meaning that this will output more heat then it can dissipate. The fin density and the upped fan size will probably help. But you won't see low, cool temps like the 460 or 470.

I'm guessing Clock for clock you see 10-20fps gain depending on game with this card

Who said anything about voltage?  TDP is in fact a measurement of the heat generated in watts.  Maximum power consumption is not equal to the TDP but close.  The GTX 580 can exceed 300W of power consumption.  A PCI-E 2.0 slot is rated for 75W but can deliver more.  20 FPS gain is unlikely except in games that already run at hundreds of FPS with a single GTX 480.

Regarding the other comments talking about size of the card...

GTX 470 = 9.5 inches long, uses its own backplate
GTX 480 = 10.5 inches long
GTX 580 = 10.5 inches long

i think your confused here...
there is no formal conversion of watts to a heat measurement
watts is joules per second (a rate of energy consumption or generation)
heat is measured in degrees celsuis or kelvin
when u generate or consume energy heat is not always a by product

Actually it can be anywhere between 225 and 375w, remembering that the PCI-E2 slot provides 150w as well

You mean PCI-E 2.0 and 2.1?  Didn't know that.  I hope the 244W number is correct.

Yup

Q6: What other new features are introduced in the PCIe 2.0 specification?
A6: The most predominant new feature in PCIe 2.0 is 5GT/s speed, which includes new mechanisms for software control of link speed, reporting of speed and width changes, and control of loopback. Other new features include:
  • PCI compatibility using the established PCI software programming models, thus facilitating a smooth transition to new hardware while allowing software to evolve to take advantage of PCI Express features
  • Enhanced Completion Timeout Control, which includes required and optional aspects, reduces false timeouts and increases the ability to ‘tune’ the timeouts
  • Function Level Reset and Access Control Services, giving enhanced robustness and support of certain IOV features (optional)
  • Slot Power Limit Changes to allow for higher powered slots, which support the newer, high-performance graphics cards. This new feature works in tandem with the 300W Card Electro-mechanical specification
This could explain some users getting unstable Furmark or OCCT results when using PCIE 1.x slots.

Perhaps the movement is away from dual GPU cards. The parallel processing occurs at the core level, look at the number of shaders!

Well the GTX 580 should be close to the 5970 in performance.  I'm guessing a NVIDIA dual GPU will show up around the same time as the 5970 replacement.  I avoid dual GPUs myself.

One would only hope.  Dual chips never seem to get the support they need and are often prone to problems.  AMD and Nvidia should agree to drop them.  Get SLI or Crossfire if you want true multi GPU performance.

Good, time to lower the price on the 480 so I can SLI without paying a premium.

I don't, for someone with already a set of 400-series cards, this is no real upgrade. Not enough to bother with and definitely not worth calling a 500-series card.

Well, I've been happy with my pair of 260's for a couple years now, so I think going to a single 580 would be a nice upgrade for me.

My only concern now is noise/heat.  It looks like the same PCB and fan as the 480, and similar heatsink setup as the 470.

i agree. i have over $1000 in my 2 480's.  if i sell them i will get $750 for them, and then have to buy 2 580's for $1000.  that means it will cost me $600 ($300 in depreciation + $300 for 580's) to upgrade 10-20%.  i am better off waiting for the 680 getting $200 for the cards and spending $1000 on the new cards.  by that time i should be getting 60-80% performance increase.

Well both of your GTX 260s cough up more heat than a GTX 580.  But those are pretty quiet cards, never needed high fan speeds with them.  I went from GTX 260 CORE 216 55nm SLI to a GTX 480 and it was great, especially seeing those minimum frame rates and AA performance go up.  PhysX is much faster too.  No more micro stutter in Crysis games.

Why shouldn't they have the same problem? They still have to bin for the 580... There is a reason why nether NVIDIA nor AMD have moved on to 28nm right now. If anything I think we'll eventually see fused off GF110 GTX480's as a GTX485 and GTX470's as GTX475 once they exhaust the GF100 supply. Or worst case, this'll be the entheusiast chip for 2011 and instead of a retread as GTX485 and GTX475 these fused off chips will be the full entheusiast lineup for the 500-series in 2011. God I hope not. Either way it goes, there'll be fused off variants of the GF110 floating around with some Geforce name in the next few months. NVIDIA has historicly proven that there will be.

No 512 bit bus width.  Same resources as GF100.  We now get all shader clusters (512 CUDA cores/64 TMUs/48 ROPs vs 480 CUDA cores/60 TMUs/48 ROPs) but less transistors (2.9 billion vs 3.2 billion).

Well then these cards are not for you then. It's you choice to sit on what you have or move up. No reason to bash the cards. I sold off my GTX 480's about a months ago. I didn't take much of a hit on them and for what I did lose it was well worth the enjoyment time I got out of them.

I also can't believe the whining over the 580 naming, it's just a number.

Because the node has matured, and nvidia has adjusted what needed to be to ensure fully enabled Dies are producible.

The 285 cost less than the 280 upon release going by memory.

Because the 285 cost less to create for one, and the other being that there was higher yields thanks to the improved and matured node.

I also can't believe the whining over the 580 naming, it's just a number.

The difference is not enough to make me want to lose money on the change. There is significance to the 500-series label. NVIDIA designates series changes as major changes in the archetecture. They made the determination to call it the 500-series, instead of the GTX485 or the GTX680. My insight on the matter is quite easy to follow for those who know the history of NVIDIA releases. It's obvious NVIDIA didn't think it was enough for a archeticture change either, or they would have kept to the 2-series naming jump and it would have been the GTX680.

I think you are a bit confused, I'm not whining at all. Ultimately, this is all just PR marketing noise you've been spoon fed. Labeling someone as a whiner is a reaction by people that don't like the writing on the wall when it's spelled out to them. I don't fit into your notion of reality, therefore I'm a whiner. Besides, you should know better than to label other forum members in an insulting way around here. It will get you a warning.

Well then these cards are not for you then.

I also can't believe the whining over the 580 naming, it's just a number.

Nah your just seem to be nit picking at stuff. The numbering isn't a big deal. There are tons of people who will drop their current card to get this one and tons other waiting to purchase it. Sorry nVidia didn't need Brad Hawthorne in their development and AMD allowed you inside for setup, but to nit pick like this is really unbecoming of you.
