Right, but by the looks of this you seem to be the lady here.

is that a fw900 i see there to the right?

No it's a TV I bought about 9 years ago. Since I just watch the news and football on it, no need to go LED TV quite yet.
I'm looking forward to possibly more efficient power consumption with the 580.
I'll give the 480 a good run-through for comparison purposes if and when this revision card comes into my possession

Turning down HPC...would that also decrease performance in any GPGPU application?   Folding, Adobe Premiere CS5, etc?

Now a days?  It's always been impossible.  The next best thing is always just months away it seems.......futile but exciting.

if evga learned anything from last time hi-flow bracket and backplate need to be standard equipment on the gtx580

Looks like until a backplate is released, the 480 one will fit right?

assuming the PCB is the same and the screws lineup
dimensionally it's the same size as the 470/480, however doesn't the backplate say 480 on it?

I really want to see what the power consumption on these things are when pushed to similar OC levels that the GTX480 is capable of.  I'm wondering just what kind of optimizations we will be seeing in terms of performance/watt.

One 6-pin and one 8-pin.  So the TDP is between 250W and 300W.  The GTX 480's is 250W but when pushed in Furmark it can consume about 300W of power.

TDP isn't how much voltages it uses. It how much heat it generates... A lot of people forget that.
This card max draw is 300w 75+75+150, PCI-e slot. 6 pin and 8 pin connectors. My guess is that the card will be a consuming max of 275w. You have around 25watts for Overclocking, Meaning your overclock probably be cut in half.

The GTX470 TDP is 215w, Each heatpipe (8mm) can handle around 42.3 watts.
As you can see in this picture

The 470 heatsink has 5 heatpipes at 8mm each The cooler on the card is barely can handle the beast.

This card has the simaliar cooling setup meaning that this will output more heat then it can dissipate. The fin density and the upped fan size will probably help. But you won't see low, cool temps like the 460 or 470.

I'm guessing Clock for clock you see 10-20fps gain depending on game with this card

gutcheck

The only reason I'd consider these is if they use less power then my 480's.  I don't want to buy new waterblocks already.... maybe the 480 blocks will fit?  I doubt it....

If the PCBs really are the same then they should fit.  But then again, I don't think GTX 280 blocks fit GTX 285s.  Since the GTX 580 has a 6-pin and 8-pin PCI-E connector just like the GTX 480, power consumption is in the same ball park as the GTX 480.  So to those of us with GTX 480s, no need to upgrade to the GTX 580.  A decent overclock on the GTX 480 will bring us above a stock GTX 580.  Overclocking potential on the GTX 580 will be interesting but since it's an enthusiast card with a TDP of at least 250W, heat will be in the way for many folks.

You haven't read my reply on page 3, have you?

use something that has a higher heat capacity to dissipate heat
copper and aluminium are fine for lower heat applications and economically cheaper (aluminium more so than copper)
passive cooling needs to step up their game and offer some premium metal alloy
no idea what the gains to cost would be but u can only get away with so much using the same kind of metal for so long
all these fancy heatsink and heatpipe designs cannot evade science

its nice to wish, but did we not learn anything from the 4xx series cards.  Nothing is true untill we see it on evga's website.  i am very interested to find out more info on this card, but it really isnt a 580, sounds more like a 485.  we will still need to see when it is released the performance numbers.  i have no intentions of selling my 480's for a 580........yet.  it was a good read, but nothing is true in the computer world

Its like how the 260 was. IMO nothing too big.

I can see this capable of SLI'ing with 480s. But with the name change. This probably isn't going to happen. New name and a 20-30% claim is enough to for people to 'upgrade' or step up.

[HazMatt

My only questions now are noise and heat.

Hopefully more info in the weeks to come.

From my guessing. Noise would be quieter due to the bigger fan. Same sizes as the 285/260s, heat probably be a little lower if not the same.

The only thing bigger about the 580 fan is the hole around it. The fan itself is as big as the 480 one.

You might be right... Then scrap that. It will be as hot as the 480 if not hotter :)

Ill wait till like may to get a 500 series.I want to read all the posts complaining about heat and fan noise first.Especially since it looks like there using the same cooler.

The fan seems to be bigger than what the 480/470/465 had and more similar to the one used on the 200 series cards, so in theory the fan noise should be lower.

The fan is the same size as the one on the GTX 480. The hole around the fan is bigger.

Actually the fan does look larger on the GTX 580, even looks to be a different fan. The holes in the center part are closer to the edge and the blades look to be further away from the center on the GTX 580 picture.

Could be an optical illusion though.

This card max draw is 300w 75+75+150, PCI-e slot. 6 pin and 8 pin connectors. My guess is that the card will be a consuming max of 275w. You have around 25watts for Overclocking, Meaning your overclock probably be cut in half.

Who said anything about voltage?  TDP is in fact a measurement of the heat generated in watts.  Maximum power consumption is not equal to the TDP but close.  The GTX 580 can exceed 300W of power consumption.  A PCI-E 2.0 slot is rated for 75W but can deliver more.  20 FPS gain is unlikely except in games that already run at hundreds of FPS with a single GTX 480.

Regarding the other comments talking about size of the card...

GTX 470 = 9.5 inches long, uses its own backplate
GTX 480 = 10.5 inches long
GTX 580 = 10.5 inches long

So if the 580 will possibly generate the same amount of heat and consume around the same amount of power as the standard 480, then do the 'better efficiency' claims stem from the fact that it performs ~10-20% better in the same environment?

As a side note, I would love for EVGA to release the card with the HF bracket and backplate

[HazMatt]

So if the 580 will possibly generate the same amount of heat and consume around the same amount of power as the standard 480, then do the 'better efficiency' claims stem from the fact that it performs ~10-20% better in the same environment?

Yep that's the way it seems.  I didn't expect a < 250W TDP since it has only been a few months since GF100 cards became available.  Same 40nm fabrication process.

Such a shame on the decreased transistor count.  GTX 480 was missing 32 CUDA cores and 4 texture units.  GTX 580 is missing 300 million transistors.  Oh well, the GTX 580 is better across the board in that chart.  Official reviews will be interesting.

VRZone is still spewing the rubbish about 128TMU's.
