My i7-3820 at 4.875 on my X79 Dark (Now 5 GIG!)

So tonight I thought I would give 39x125 a try since 38X worked so well for so long. So I only changed two things:
 
  1. The CPU multi to 39X of course
  2. Enabled the PPL override option located just above the multi  option
Oh I did do a 3rd thing, I hooked up the PCI power connector on the Dark that I had never used since my power supply was in the way. That was probably the biggest difference. Got my 3DMark Vantage score up 1000 points; I finally hit the 44k area. I'll post my bios screen shots.

    Impressive OC there...
     
    The highest I ever pushed mine was 4.808GHz using a 120 Bclk & a 40 multi.  It was stable for 10 passes with the IntelBurnTest.

    Okay, I went for it. It's now 5 GIG! Damn this thing is snappy.

    Well at first I did nothing, but then Vantage stop responding. So then I went up 2 clicks on the vcore and touched nothing else. If you look at the screen shots in the first 2 posts you will see vdroop is still on and Intel spec. Vantage score went up again but not as big a leap as before. System won't boot into win 10 from cold start now, goes into bios screen. If I just escape out and boot it goes right into windows. It's still at 5.0 as I write this.

    Ok, I see now.  Your Vcore VDroop is disabled.  Your VSA VDroop is Intel spec.  That's the same settings I use ever since BIOS rev 2.13 was released.  These 3820's are pretty sturdy chips it seems...

    You are correct. I don't ever remember turning that off. I'm also confused on how the system auto sets my memory speeds exactly where I would set them myself; It's set faster than the XMP1 mode and I did nothing. This Dark is amazing! Thanks EVGA!  
     
    Now I noticed it's not throttling down to 12X since I raised Vcore. The temps are still good though as you can see in the attachment.
     
    Update: Good news, I turned off the fast boot option and it now boots into Windows directly. I don't see a difference in boot time, it was already quick.

    Interesting.  I never tried that fast boot option.  Glad to hear it resolved your boot issue.

    Yes, idle temps. So it would not pass the Intel Burn test with so much voltage, so I went back to 39X to see if it was stable. It did pass but it got hotter than ever before. Will just hold it here for now and see if it survives gaming.

    My highest core temp was 74C running IBT at 4.80GHz.  That's a bit toasty for my taste for general use.  4.625 is fine for me and I only use that in cooler months.  I mainly use 4.50 in the summer.  Pretty hot & humid here in Florida most of the year.

    That's another reason for a good PC case. I run my H100 water cooler externally mounted in the rear so you don't see it. it's an older picture, it's push/pull now. I wish I had a case made for it. I ran 4.75G all summer long with no problems. I am  looking for a big case so I can use slot 6 and also hide my cooler. Just need to convince the wife I need it.

    Yes it is. I never push a system  just to see what it will do, but push it the fastest that I can use it daily. I may back off the voltage a bit since I'm back down to 4.875G.  I need to game with it first, but been too busy on some other computer projects for the wife.

    So yesterday the system hung up when it went to sleep. I remember a warning about the the PPL override option saying it could mess with the C-states reliability, so I disabled it. Then it would not boot at 4.875G settings with it turned off. So I turned it back on and everything is fine. I may just modify the power options in Win 10 so it doesn't  sleep when i'm away temporary and just make sure to power down when not planning to use the system; which I do for the most part anyways.
     
    Just wanted to get the word out that that setting really does help in getting your max OC.

    Yeah, I always have the PLL override option enabled with an OC.  Never used sleep before, so didn't know that could be an issue.  I can wait the 10 - 15 seconds it takes to boot so I always shut down when not in use.

    Thanks guys. With the new build I had to remove the push pull fans on the water cooler. So I'm just holding at 4.875G for the past few weeks. The holidays are here and it's getting difficult to find spare time. But when I do, I will mod the water cooler mount back to push pull and work on the 5G once more.
