For the last month I have been unable to sleep.  Every time I am almost asleep, I feel like there is a booming-electrical shock right to the center of my brain.  This happens right before I fall asleep.  It happens over and over (its happened up to 12 times a night).  After this happens several times, I feel like I get re-energized and can't sleep.  I get so mad, I scream and punch things.  This forces me to have AMS (Altered Mental Status) and has been also affecting me during the day.

During the day, these same sensations happen, and when I am walking, they cause extreme dizziness.  I am dizzy, nauseous and exhausted most days.  To make matters worse, my vision has been weird as of late.  If I am looking at an object, my eyes will go back and forth slightly, which appears objects (especially lines) to look like they are vibrating.  A chaplain that I work with always wears a button up polo shirt that has close proximity vertical lines.  When looking at this, these lines look like air traveling over blinds on a window.  It makes me very nauseous.  I also have been having increased headaches (I never have had bad headaches in my life).

I work in a Emergency Department and I think after work tonight (in 3.5 hours), I am going to demand an MRI.  I can't live my life anymore like this.  I have been having increased anxiety as a result, and I can barely function.  It sucks so bad!! :'(

I'm only 35 and the chances of having something bad neurologically (brain tumor, central nervous system disease, etc.) is slim, but I think I need to get it checked out non-the-less.

Have you recently stopped any medications? Some of those symptoms sound like it. Antidepressants for one will throw for a real loop if you stop taking them. The Dr appointment is a real good Idea just follow through with it. Your health is yours and yours only, you have to take care of yourself.

I was on Lexapro (very small dose - 5 mg.) for 1 month.  I haven't taken that medication in almost 2 months now.  I did have some small side effects from that at first, but those effects have stopped.  This is way worse.

In the past I was on Lexapro for almost 2 years and when I came of the medication then, I had some bad withdrawls, but nothing near to what I am experiencing now.

Maybe you have Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI). No, I kid. It's a genetic disease, you should know ahead of time if you were at risk for having it, and it is extremely rare.
Mad cow disease maybe from bad beef or venison?

    It isn't funny. I shouldn't joke.

Have you taken a hit to the head recently? The reason I ask is because I recently had a fairly bad concussion from an accident at work, and ended up with 7 weeks off work with severe headaches pretty much 24/7, and a lot of problems sleeping even though I was exhausted. I experienced bouts of dizziness particularly if I did any even light physical exercise of any sort, and would also become nauseous, although in hind sight the nausea may have been a result of the dizziness (much like motion sickness). I could not function well even with some mundane tasks - I just couldn't concentrate properly and would lose track of what I was doing and end up kind of just spinning my wheels and would get quite frustrated, somewhat like what you seem to be experiencing. I was also sensitive to light a little - like bright sunny days I'd squint and it just made the headaches a bit worse. Also found evenings were worse than mornings. My wife said I was snapping at her a bit and had little patience with anything (although a 24/7 headache day after day will do that to anyone I'm sure).

Get yourself an appointment with a neurologist asap - I hit the back of my head pretty damn hard and had to have an xray to check for skull fracture and a brain MRI to check for internal issues as a result of the accident, fortunately both came out clear, but that should definitely be your first concern.

The neurologist prescribed a low dose of some sort of drug to help with sleeping (I think it was an antidepressant, don't recall the name now) and said for a small segment of users (less than 10%) it will actually cause insomnia instead of sleep.. and of course after my first time taking it I was awake until 5am lol, so that was the end of those.

All I could do was try to rest as much as possible and took a lot of advil and put as little mental strain on myself as possible, and just wait it out.. unfortunately that's about all he could do for me. Concussions can take anywhere from 3 weeks to several months to come right.

Get to a neurologist asap. If you don't have a concussion, I just read lexapro is often used for anxiety, and some of your symptoms may be the anxiety returning?

It could also be sleep deprivation causing the other problems, in fact extreme sleep deprivation does cause hallucinations eventually. I've had problems with sleep for a long time.

Sitting in front of a very bright high-lux light (something like this) in the morning for 15 minutes while you have breakfast etc may help get your circadian rhythms back in sync if the problems derive from sleep deprivation. From that link, "this light will help regulate your circadian rhythm, which regulates your cortisol/melatonin levels. Cortisol is supposed to peak in the morning; however, many people have high cortisol throughout the day. High cortisol tends to cause stress and anxiety, so regulating your cortisol levels should help with anxiety provided the anxiety isn't caused by some other factor in your life."

    Good luck.

Have you tried to just relax and take some time away from it all? This sounds more like stress than anything and lack of dedicated sleep. No i don't mean just sleep. I mean disconnect and relax and fall asleep naturally instead of knowing you have to wake up at 6A or whatever.

If you can afford it a consultation with a sleep specialist would be in order if an MRI shows no problems.

Im getting ready to go in for a CT -Scan in 1 hour. After this, my ER dr. Is giving me a RX to have an MRI done at the beginning of next week, and finally, he is referring me to a neurologist.

After this, I am also going to have a sleep study done (assuming I have no major issues with my imaging).

Its been a long day here at the ER.... (I work 12 hour days), and I have already been checked in here for 3 hours :/

Good that you are doing something about it - that's no way to live if you don't have to. Hope whatever the issue is can be resolved. Just added the following to my post above, worth keeping in mind:

I know about Lexapro, I was taking it at one point too. My doc said at the time to not quit cold turkey on that stuff. It's worse than quitting cigarettes, though I have never smoked in my life. I can only imagine.

I used to have problems sleeping too. Many times in a month I would go 2 to 3 days with out any hour of sleep. Man sleep deprivation is such torture. Not having enough sleep will cause a BIG host of problems with your health and life in general. I went to get myself checked out and they prescribed me Trazodone. I was REALLY concerned about taking it because that drug is for people who have depression as well as insomnia. I tried it a few times and it hardly worked for me. I had my mind set that I was not going to rely on and stupid drug that the medical industry profits from. I sleep like a baby now since I changed my diet up and even upping my work out routine even more. Also part of my problem I had was just worrying about not getting enough sleep in general which caused me to stay up too LOL.  My friend had sleep issues too but one of his problems was worrying about legal issues he was dealing with and also him feeling as though he was missing out in life(basically FOMO: fear of missing out). I hope you resolve your issue Vegeta. It worries me that you get nauseous just looking at something.

Bad diet can cause your symptoms, PM me everything you eat in a week in case i get preoccupied and forget to check the thread. Btw i had a bad diet that most people would say was a better than average diet that resulted in neurological symptoms. Which no doctor was able to diagnose properly, that was luckily done by myself or i would be dead by now, or at the very least debilitated. Key thing to remember is the principle of toxicology, which is the dose makes the poison. To much of anything including water will kill u and the dose for certain ingredients is much lower than people realize to cause negative effects. Then dose over time can cause these sympoms to become more and more severe over time, or worse symptoms may develop.

Thats vertigo; eliminate garlic, onion, scallions, and any onion type ingredient. Its put in everything from sauces to chips to salad dressing to just about any takeout food in high doses. I bet those headaches r more focused on the front right portion of your brain, like your brain is pressing right up against the back of your eye, and even your inner right ear is feeling strange. Its because its messing with the stones in your ear that controls your balance. Eliminate frying anything and stick with grilling. I have recipes if u need help. No more than 12 hours after switching your diet any increase in symptom severity will stop and sometime in the following 24 hours your symptoms will start to decline. Id say anywhere from a week or two before u start feeling close to normal. It will take a year before you can say you think you are fully back to normal. Next, here is my prior warning to the evga forum community:

Vegeta, maybe you just need a very long vacation? Like 3 weeks long, somewhere far far away in a world that is not USA, Getting away from your PC, your daily life, your job. Bring the wife and relax while having some R&R.  I just know that sometimes after a long period of time our job can kill us and break us down no matter how much we love it, it can still break us down. We all need vacations in our lives. I would try a vac out.

I hear that.. haven't had a holiday in almost 5 years (just before our daughter was born), and average about 3-4 hours sleep a night - just too busy with work, the 20+ hours a week spent commuting to work (NYC sucks like that), and of course being primary caregiver for my daughter, including dropping off and pickups from daycare and rushing to get there after a day of work with no breaks, then have to feed her, bath her, and spend way too much time trying to get her to sleep at night lol, there's just no time left to 'live' life for myself. Got a to-do list a mile long on top. Stressful.

Have you tried to just relax and take some time away from it all? This sounds more like stress than anything and lack of dedicated sleep. No i don't mean just sleep. I mean disconnect and relax and fall asleep naturally instead of knowing you have to wake up at 6A or whatever.

Bingo...   Working as a first responder can be unbelievably stressful... You are going to re-live these life and death situations over and over in your subconscious...  Especially when trying to relax or sleep...   You need to change careers...  Or quit sniffin' glue!!  lol  j/k

Most SSRI's need to be weened off over a few weeks.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was this. Stopping an SSRI cold turkey really messes with serotonin levels which is known to cause "brain zaps" and other symptoms that sound very similar to yours.

Stressful.

    Need some of this:

I work a very stressful job where I deal with traumas coming into the Emergency Department.  We are the only Trauma center in Idaho and we have lots of craziness come (drownings, Motorcycle crashes, Motor Vehicle Crashes, Horse, Bull accidents, GSW (Gun shot wounds - self inflicted, homicidal), hanging, etc...

I work with the families of these patients who come into the unit and serve and take care of their needs.  I provide emotional support and work closely with the hospital chaplains to help them during this difficult processes.

I have had like NO time off lately - 2 people on vacation - Boss out of town (on top of 2 people) - not to mention that there are only 6 people in my department and I work crazy long 12 hour shifts.

Seeing people die all the time and seeing the grief that families go through is so difficult to emotionally deal with.  Sometimes I go home and nothing I can do can seem to help me destress.  Sadly I think this job gives me anxiety and depression.  I'm sure I will find a happy balance and will end up feeling better soon.

I wish I could take time off - but that is a pipe dream... Not going to happen.  Shoot, I can't even call in sick in my department (which sucks because I accrue over 20 paid days of vacation per year + 7 days of sick time).
