So today while playing Battlefield 4 on my completely stock computer my monitor lost connection and I immidedty start hearing a buzz. With half a second I look into my case and see a 2-4 inch jet of flame and sparks coming from my gpu in between my gpu and mobo. All components where purchased in Nov 15. Have you guys ever heard of anything like this?

I have seen maybe 4 threads where this happened, and not specifically the 970, but yes, it does happen. Submit an RMA so EVGA can try to decipher what the cause was. Did anything else get damaged during the event. Pictures can be loaded to sites like imgur if that is possible, and then like them through web url. Be aware, you will need 11 posts to get links to work properly. There is a work around. Just post the link and add a parentheses around the . or space out the link.

Hey, I always use my phone, so I completely understand. Also, get lots of pictures with everything as it sits. EVGA is going to want them.

It looks like the motherboard just got smoke on it, so it might be just fine other than a little cosmetic damage to the SATA ports. I've got no idea what the recourse for this would be, but if there is damage other than to the GPU I really hope EVGA covers it all. http://www.evga.com/about/contactus/ 24/7 tech support - register the card if you haven't and give them a call.

Cosmetic damage aside what I'm worried about is the surge. The GPU obviously had a very serious ark going on to create that kind of damage. If I had not been home my house would have burned down. But I wont know the damage until I RMA the gpu and put the new one in. Customer support already told me to pack sand if anything else is damaged though. Which made me really sad because I love EVGA. Only GPU's I have purchased the last 10 years and to be treated like that by a CSR really left me bitter.

tommybmcnutt I was born in San Diego.
That would be considered spam. We don't want spam and unless it's an introduction post, we don't care where you were born. They told you to pack sand? I guess you better start packing, ha. Seriously though, I would go ahead and RMA the PSU as well. Or test your PSU, make sure it's working within specs. Also, make sure to make it known to a supervisor if the CS rep was rude. That is very unusual for evga.

I have looked over the images that you posted on imgur. You will want to register the card the an reach out to us at Support@EVGA.com or 888-881-3842. Because you purchased the card recently, it should be under warranty, most 970 cards have a three year warranty. As far as damage to any other components we cannot cover that, that has to be covered by the warranty of those products.

How did you supply power to your PSU ? Could have been a spike in your home power from the utility company ? Was there a thunderstorm in your ares ? If the utility supply coming into you home caused the damage; you should talk with your homeowners / renters insurance agent - see if you are covered for any out of pocket expenses.

Oh wow, I thought EVGA was better than that. EVGA's warranty is no where near as good as I thought then. That's really bogus of yall to do. It was your product EVGA that caught up in flames, it should be your responsibility.

I doubt you got a surge from your PSU... Especially if it's from a reputable brand. I'm not exactly sure what kind of components EVGA is using on their PCB's these days, but if I was a betting man, I would probably say a faulty tantalum capacitor.

Yeah just looked at the pictures.... Definitely not a surge. Something on the PCB either failed or overheated... You can see the big polarized caps have some charring on them and it looks like the entire PCB got extremely hot, not just a single component failure. That's a lot of charring.... It probably wouldn't show anything, but you could check the + and - connections on the PCB Molex connections and check the resistance across the +12v rail of the GPU. It should be well protected though and the failure probably happened on a lower voltage regulator or possibly even the FETs
