I'll start my story out on my first card, So I first purchased an ASUS 980 Strix and it had a super loud coil whine on the regular 3dMark. I was pushing over 1200 FPS...ok I'll chock it up to no game is really going to get that high and it's just that powerful.

Here comes Far Cry 4 and Dying light...slight buzzing during gameplay and it's not the fan. I eventually get tired of it and send it back to Newegg and grab the EVGA 04G-P4-2980-KR. First one I received I popped it with 3dMark...same noise, started up the games...same thing so I RMA'd it. Received EVGA 04G-P4-2980-KR #2 and still getting the same noises. I've even used afterburner to push the fans up to 100%, fan noise is different than the slight buzz I was hearing in the two games. I even went as far as switching out my PSU from a Thermaltake Gold plus to a Corsair Platinum plus and I get the same results. Should I RMA card #3 and grab another 980?

Coil whine is a common thing in video cards (seemingly more common nowadays)... While it's not pleasant, it does not always mean that you will be granted an RMA because technically, there's nothing wrong with it's performance.. It's just making noise due to the electric current. It's at the vendor's discretion if they want to grant you an RMA. However, having said that, many users HAVE gotten to RMA their cards strictly on coil whine but just for your information, YMMV.
