Hey there EVGA,
I traded up my 1070 FTW edition (which by the way was a great, quiet and problem free card) to a 1080 ACX 3.0 edition. I also paid for the 10 year warranty, this trade up came through last week.

This new card, though high performance, is unacceptably loud. I got this model because it was known for being quiet, of course as everyone knows that was before it was realized EVGA didn't put heatsinks on the VRMs. Since mine is a step up model it has the heat pads factory installed along with the updated bios. This means that while it certainly runs pretty cool, it's LOUD. Like, louder than many cards I've had and I've had a lot. I'm using a good case too, with 120mm exhaust and intake with an M.2 SSD so the card is really the only thing making heat.

Here's what I'm asking: I don't feel that I got what I paid for. You advertised this model as being quiet, but after the repair it stands as being one of the loudest on the market. This is affecting my enjoyment of the product, and affecting its fan lifespan. I'd like to do a cross trade for a foundation edition 1080. Can this be done?

    Dear boltaction,

I am sorry for any confusion as I can confirm that the card in question should not be abnormally loud.  Can you confirm that you are not running a custom fan profile?

I can also confirm that we have tested this model next to a Founder Edition and the fan is quieter on the EVGA GTX 1080 ACX 3.0 models.

    Hey Chris,
Yeah, I used DDU and removed PrecisionX as well before installing this new card. It's all set to auto. It's loud, man. over 2200rpm measured.

Did you test EVGA GTX 1080 ACX 3.0 model against the Founders Edition before or -after- the bios mod?

    Dear boltaction,

I can confirm that if the fan is running at 2200 RPM then this would be while the card is under load.  The Founders would also ramp up the fan under load and it is also audible.  The cards were tested and the ACX 3.0 is quieter than the reference solution.

The VBIOS update is recommended, but it is not required.  If you do want the original VBIOS then we can help to send this to you?

We want you to be happy with your product and please if you are concerned for any reason contact our support as we are here to help.

I know I can modify the fan speed manually, but the original BIOS would be favored as I could trust it to do it natively without intervention. If you can send it, preferably publicly here, then people like me who

And let me say: I have a lot of trust for EVGA. I also *sincerely* like calling your number and getting an American nerd who isn't afraid to talk technical details. I want to support your company, and I have been suggesting evga to video design clients. We have over 10 of your 1080s in the field for my clients and I'd like to think we will do more.

Seeing a lack of a solid spot on the heatsink underside to properly cool the VRMs hurt. Your fix is the best you can do as a company and it's working. But it's been a negative experience, with the noise profile. I completely understand why you had to do it, but it hurt your reputation. This is coming from someone who loves your company. If you don't mind putting the original BIOS up here with caveats to others, I would love to see it so other techs like me can use it knowing what we are doing.

This is exactly why I was thinking of cancelling my step up if it ever goes through?  I've heard people waiting 6+ months, which would mean the 1080 Ti would be out for a few months by then since I requested it early October lol.  In any case, I want a card as silent as my 1070 FTW, I'm going to install the thermal pads and if I ever do the step up I'd like the opportunity to use an old Bios on the 1080 so I don't have to bother with custom fan profiles other than making sure the fans are on at 20% while idle (like the 1070 FTW 2nd Bios does).  Or how about making a second alternative official bios for the 1080 that has a fan profile that starts with 20% idle fans and only ramps up to the max heard with the original 1080/1070 Bios?  After all, I thought thermal pads was enough of a change to prevent any future VRM heating issues?
