Looking for advice and/or recommendations on what Intel platform I should upgrade to for gaming. I am currently using an Intel Core i7-950 (Bloomfield) CPU based on the EVGA Classified E760 X58 LGA1366 platform.

I'm not necessarily looking for bleeding edge tech, but I am trying to find the point of diminishing returns where throwing more money at a platform is only going to net you incremental performance increases.

you could drop in a 6 core 32nm chip and play around a little bit, if your board is rev 1.1 if not it'll need to be modified (easy solder points)  the X5650 uses a 20x  the W 3680&90 have unlocked multipliers

or anything in the 1151 socket will be fun..

While X58 was a phenomenally good platform, it's getting a bit long in the tooth now.

The Z97 platform is great, although it's a couple of years old now but certainly still more than adequate today and a significant step up from what you have now.

Unless you're doing extensive video editing / photoshop / folding, there's probably no need to go more than 4 cores, so X99 platform is likely pointless for you.

Z170 is the latest platform and even that has been out for a while now, although if you want to wait a little bit, the Kaby Lake processors are due to be released very soon, and I believe that will still use the Z170 platform (although presumably will need a bios update) so you'll be set for quite a few years easily, but you said you're not necessarily looking for bleeding edge, so...

I tried the Z170 and had a few issues with some drivers because I was wanting to stay on Windows 7, and I had no real need to go X99 6-core, so I ended up going from X79 Dark to the Z97 Classified about a year ago, and I am very happy with it and I will very likely stay on this platform until at least Cannonlake in the 2nd half of 2017.

    Depends on your budget really.

Based on my own experience, and if budget is a consideration, I'd recommend going for the EVGA Z97 Classified, and an i7-4790k if you want good out-of-the-box speed (4.4GHz). If money isn't an issue, go straight for the Z170 Classy K new, and a top of the line CPU. Alternatively, once Kaby Lake comes out, you'll probably see a few good deals for a used Z170 board and CPU going in the For Sale section of the site [link], so keep an eye out...  I wouldn't buy through EBay though - notorious for being ripped off with tech there.

Let us know what you end up doing!

Either get a 6 Core Xeon or go 1151

I have an X79 board with an Xeon E5-1620 CPU in it which I got for like 25$. I can probably upgrade to some 6 core V2 Xeon in the future for cheap. I recommend the X79 platform it is still enough for gaming.
