Hi, I would like to upgrade from 8 to 16 Gb. My question is, in terms of gaming, is it necessary, or should I stay with the 8. Please take a look at my specs in the signature to get a pic. - Regards, C. Edit: I wanna by a 1080 too, at the end of the year... in this case, make the 16 Gb sense too?

I say go for the extra 8 GB to get the full use out of everything your CPU can do for you. I've never used anything less than 16 GB though many are of the opinion that 4 GB is still plenty for gaming. Things more than likely have changed since I last saw that opinion but my recommendation has always been that more is better for RAM up to a point.

It all depends on if you multitask or not. If you do a lot of things at the same time I would upgrade. If you just game without running apps in the background you should be fine.

Since yesterday, I read a lot about memory... As far as I know, it all depends on latencys and because of that 8 can be faster than 16. But in my case, it's simply a gaming-rig and I wanna have a smooth frame-performance... @Shockjockey: I wouldn't say that I do much multitasking... but from what I see, with The Witcher 3 - one of my favs -, the memory's ramped up. ^^

Latencies and the timing is important. My GSkill 2133 RAM is better in benchmarks than my Corsair 2400 RAM because the GSkill has 'tighter' timing. GSkill Ripjaws-X is 9-11-10-28 while the Vengeance Pro was something like 10-13-13-34.

16GB compared to 8GB will make a few differences which would benefit you. Having 16GB means far less read/writes to the hard drive. Games should load faster. It also means having more applications open won't slow down your system as much.

Personally I have gone from 8GB to 16GB, but in recent AAA titles, saw zero difference in FPS. 16GB is useful for the rendering stuff I do, but not for gaming.

That's what I read too... But 16Gb "sounds" cool. ^^ Do you think that it will be a difference with a 1080, especially with the 8 Gb of v-ram and having "only" 8 Gb on the mainboard? Edit: I'm not done with this thread, but so far thank you guys for your opinions.

I had 6GB in a X-58 I7-920 then I decided to add another 6GB didnt see any difference. But 4 GB is probably the mininum for any desktop with windows Vista or Above. 8 GB should be Plenty.

16 GB sounds much more manly to me. It lets everyone know you mean business, LOL. I don't think it'll cause any problems. After a fresh boot, like now, I am only using 1,750 MB but when I first boot in the morning my AV/AS scan uses up around 6 GB or more and it just bothers me not having much fresh RAM left to access.

Grab MSI Afterburner which will monitor your total Min/Max RAM usage, MB (System RAM) as well as total Min/Max Memory usage, MB (VRAM/Video RAM) while you're gaming, or otherwise..You can enable the "Log history to file" option if you want to, but not really neccessary..You can use any online converter to convert MB to GB..If you're not using near to all your installed System RAM, then adding more would likely not benefit you, or if it did it would rarely benefit you and then not much at all..With the graphically demanding games these days, chances are that one would run out of VRAM long before running out of System RAM unless you have a card with more than 2GB of VRAM or have less than about 6GB of System RAM..There's also AIDA64 Extreme (trial or pay) for more advanced monitoring..I haven't used much over 6GB of System RAM without intentionally trying hard to by running a lot of things in the background while gaming at the same time, which one wouldn't normally do..I've noticed no difference here between running 8GB vs. 16GB. My wife said we shouldn't be spending money on RAM that we don't need..Then I asked her why she has 17,000 friggin pairs of shoes in her closet then..Touche, right?..Wrong!..That's different..

ram? nowadays? just for Gaming? then... 4GB is not enough... 8GB its quite enough actually... 16Gb is way more then enough... 32 GB is just for show off .. and 64GB is pure insanity... me? i went for 16GB cause that's practically considered "the standard" amount nowadays.... and quite affordable...

4 x 4 GB sticks seems to be the norm right now. When I bought my very first pair of 4 GB sticks I paid $169.99 on sale. A week later I jumped on another sale and got a matching pair for a mere $119.99 plus 99 cents shipping. Now they're dirt cheap. I just bought two more 4 GB sticks for $39.99 and get the urge to kick myself every time I remember buying those first four sticks.

Go with 32GB. RAM is cheap and you might as well give yourself more breathing room if you can. Ark: Survival Evolved can use over 16GB if you play single player and have a highly developed map.
