I recently got a GTX 980TI (and will get at least one more this year I believe), and am considering upgrading my many year old ASUS 21.5" 1080p (TN) monitor. It's currently overclocked to 73Hz, up from the standard 60Hz. I'd ideally like to go 4K at least, I am not really interested in going to a high refresh rate TN panel. I've considered the ultrawide 34" screens, but I'd like a 2160 vertical space.

Autodesk recently got DPI scaling support which was a primary thing holding me back from going 4K, my primary usage is gaming, I find 4K60 to be much more interesting than any of the other options like 1440P144. Am I crazy for even considering the 5K and the LG Cinema?

If you game don't go 4k. It's massively expensive to get good framerates.
 
Get away from 60hz and go higher framerates with gsync and you'll be pondering why you didn't do it earlier and how you'll never be able to go back.

Do you think TRI SLI 980TI's wouldn't be a good solution for 4K60/5K60? I'm not sure the 980 TI's have enough VRAM to drive 5K to be honest.

1440p 144/165Hz G-Sync is where its at for price/performance ratio with a good card. You don't have to go TN. They have them in IPS as well. Is IPS worth the premium price over the cheaper TN versions? Nope. But that is subjective to each person and just my opinion. 

To be honest part of the reason I was looking at 4K60/5K60 was because I didn't find the 144Hz screens to be that massive of a difference, at least not (IMO) a more profound difference than the clarity of the 4K/5K resolution. Regardless of resolution/refresh rate I do intend to go IPS or possibly VA, again IMO they just look better. Part of what makes me want the upgrade is my Surface screen looks awesome and my desktop screen not so much sadly.
