Also to note some members only Crunch Biology or Chemistry and some both but do not Crunch Umbrella project, Mathematics, Physics, Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Earth Sciences.
Some Crunch all, some a mix, and best of all you have a choice on what Project you can run and can change at Will.
But this is what Crunching is all about you can run what fits your style so to say.
This is what I think is the Best thing about BOINC over on FAH you only get what they give you, you have no choice on what Project you run.

No one is being forced to mine. Just as you said "we all have choices to crunch as we see fit", don't have to use a GPU or a cpu eiter if you don't want to, pick one or use both if you want
A mining hoosamajig is just another tool to use if you chose to.
Just as in folding, no one has to buy a 4P or a 29x or a 980GTX. It is a personal choice as to how much one wants to donate in hardware and the electricity to run it.

Any way to who ever makes the choice. GOOD luck!!!!
This is a tough one with several sides to weigh in.

Awesome last few pages folks! This thread has warmed my heart with all the different views and all trying to understand how this fits.

And just a friendly reminder... No option has been removed. Every option is still on the table.

I also want to make clear... I am attracted to the options Crunching provides. And think we all should be able to run what we want. The personal struggle I am having is the way this mining thing basically is like the kid in the neighborhood offering something to good to be true... Only it takes a while to see that it is happening...

I am really having a hard time with Mining being the same as Crunching.

Agree with your thoughts AB and I feel that Mining is not anywhere near Crunching (at least as we have known it).  They are different things that may cross paths, but right now I'm not convinced that current mining such as BU is a trustworthy investment of my time and money.  I'm one of those people that needs to see a longer term track record, especially with mining that can be so volatile and "here today, gone tomorrow-ish".

As to limiting people to running just x-qty of mining boxes, I see problems with trying to solve this in that manner.  It is not really manageable and could result in having to confront people that break the qty rule, lose team members, etc.  The solution in my mind is to allow Mining, allow it to be run to whatever level a member wants invest, but keep those points separated from the pool of traditional Crunching.  Mining by its nature will tend to want to run differently (which is OK), but can be problematic when added into Crunching as if it were just another project.

Just so everyone is on the same page with my thoughts, I'll try to put this plainly.  When I mentioned lone wolfing the mining thing there was not a thought in my mind about forming a mining team.  Rather it was to mine under another monicker/nick so I could play without disturbing the teams points.

I'll state this for the record.  The only way you're going to remove me from this team is if you all come out here and pry the warm, electrified motherboards from my hands.

That said, I'll be selling my 4P off at the end of the TMZ.  I'll still fold and crunch but with the second 980 I'll be ordering in 5 days, well it's just way to much power draw and besides the PPD for my stock 980 is 270K best I could manage with the 4P is 315K PPD.

Now let's not talk about points shall we?  Let's talk about something fun, like fly fishing!

Why not just use Testing@EVGA for all new projects?

Sure... I do not thinking mining as we understand it today is crunching... It is the same as folding vs. crunching, or cryptocurrency vs. folding. Two different types of formats with the same needs of CPU's and or GPU's.

I think I understand from the other thread that some testing is under way and a name was created for this mining. Is that correct?

Re: Mining Discussion... 2014/12/01 17:12:44 (permalink)
Correct albeit there is the problem with user names, and all.  In my world the GUID is a key to logging in securely.  CPUID is what I think BOINC and all the stats sites track.  With the CPUID it's tied across projects, so you would need to create a new user ID as well as join the correct team.  You screw with the stats when you stick with your own name on BOINC even if you join the testing team setup.

So... for now it seems to keep things separate you need to create a unique user name (different from your current BOINC name) and join the correct testing team mining@EVGA.  Then the points should separate.

On a note about the Testing@EVGA Team I do use it between changing of Projects and the Team they are on.
For some reason I have not been able to move some projects over to this Team so maybe I should remove it.
Mining@EVGA Status is now working but if need be I can rename the Team.

CPID (Cross-Project Identifier) - not CPUID - to avoid confusing computer geeks like me that wrote x86 assembly code, or run the CPUID tool.

If the cruching@evga team get's deleted on bitcoin utopia we might not have to worry about that whole issue, at least that's what boincstats said. Otherwise you just need to use a different email address, and mining@evga was the group set up specifically for bitcoin utopia. The username itself doesn't need to be different.

And it looks like my email change took effect and the stats are adjusting.. 1.5 billion just flew off my account

Anyway the Pies should be returning to their normal distribution now

Update for users who Fold on GPUs and Crunch on CPUs on the Same Rig.

I Suspend GPU on the same Rig that I Fold on the GPU, but I have found the ASIC Task will not start without "Run always" AND "Use GPU always? are both set.

So far it has not caused any issues with Folding GPU Projects.

I would keep for users that want to run CPU and GPU Tasks that do not want to run ASIC Tasks.

I would still like to have all the stats under my main account. But not interfering with the group stats. It's fine to remake the team after the stats issue gets resolved. According to boincstats its the only way to clear up the cpid issue. But who knows..

And yes, the gpu setting controls the asics, so always on is a good thing

So all you are doing now with your ASIC Boxes is mining for Coins?
Or one for Crunching and one for Mining for Coin?

the 100GH/s rbox is gonna be a permanent boinc fixture  But the antminer is for money making.

Coin mining is very akin to the stock market, you're going off future estimates and buy low sell high principles. You can still make guranteed money but if you hedge your bets.. And this is the time of year.. holidays.. lot of free time on ones hands

THE EVGA DC Captains is a founder group that the captains/co-captains use to create teams or manage our entries into challenges.  You won't find anyone crunching actively under that banner.

This is my comparison of the most active bitcoin mining pools out there, I did this test with my AntMiner S4 (2 TH/s) SHA256 ASIC Miner running @225 Mhz (+25 Mhz):

BTC Guild
  • Pool Hashrate: 14,000 TH/s
  • My Hashrate: up to 2.1 TH/s
  • My 24 Hour Average: .025 BTC ($9.13* day / $273.90* month)
  • Fees: BTC Guild deducts a 2% fee from total reward of any block reward. The remaining 98% is credited to site users under the Pay Per Last N Shares (PPLNS) method. Information on how this method works is available in the support section. Amounts shown on your dashboard have already had the fee deducted. Orphaned blocks are not credited.
  • My thoughts: Don't waste your time here, it's not very profitable as their fees suck up a 2% and then the payouts seem to be weak by comparison, especially if you do the math yourself. So unless ranking is what you're after that's the only unique feature this pool has, teams and rankings. But no way to find users, so pointless. Payouts are done at a BTC value of your choosing, fees for less than .01 BTC.
  • Security: Standard Login Protocol, SSL Security. Ability to lock bitcoin wallet address so no changes can be made.

Slush's Pool
  • Pool Hashrate: 10,000 TH/s
  • My Hashrate: up to 2.25 TH/s
  • My 24 Hour Average: .035 BTC ($12.76* day / $382.80* month)
  • Fees: Pool fee is 2% (calculated from block reward and transaction fees). Fees from bitcoin transactions are paid to miners that are using Stratum interface. An active hashrate gives you a score based on participation.
  • My thoughts: This was the first and longest running pool on the internet and you can tell why. The scoring hash-rate fluctuates based on your activity, so this feature heavily benefits long term miners, if you come and go you will not score/earn well.  It has a user driver suggestion feature that allows you to vote and depending on your hash rate is how much your vote is worth. New features being added all the time and this is the most stable and user friendly mining experience I had, if the pool hashrate jumps a little more it will be just as profitable as BTC China. Payouts are done at a BTC value of your choosing, fees for less than .01 BTC.
  • Security: Extra Secure 2 Factor Login Protocol, SSL Security.

BTC China
  • Pool Hashrate: 18,000 TH/s
  • My Hashrate: up to 2.5 TH/s
  • My 24 Hour Average: .04 BTC ($14.60* day / $438* month) This seems to be a fluke as they are now plagued with server outages and It has since dropped to .025-.035 BTC/day depending on connection issues.
  • Fees: 0% Pool fees.
  • My thoughts: The pool's site is not in English so an in-browser translator is needed to make use of this pool (like google translator). It does have details statistics and graphs just like slush's pool, but is glitchy and has long page load times so it can be frustrating at times. But it does squeak by with more payouts, so as long as you don't care about monitoring this is the best bet for you. Site has 2 daily payouts to the wallet account of your choosing (if it is above a .01 BTC) or to their own currency exchange and pay system.
  • Security: Standard Login Protocol, SSL Security.

*At the current exchange rate of $365USD/BTC
