"The flaw revolves around Nvidia graphics cards with users taking to Nvidia’s forums to report Windows Update is automatically installing new drivers which break multimonitor setups, SLI (dual card) configurations and can even stop PCs booting entirely which pushes Windows 10 into its emergency recovery mode."

Aaaannnd its starting already. I knew this was coming as soon as I saw that article on mandated updates. Nvidia and Microsoft have really struck out with updates/drivers for the last year. Someone better start hiring some competent software designers and get rid of the script kiddies, lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I believe the PC pro version auto updates can be turned off.

In the home version it can be disabled in Services.msc > disable windows update.

Windows 10 Enterprise does allow users to postpone any update indefinitely but it is only available in bulk licensing.

Nice work MicroSoft. You've probably just pissed off at least 50% of users with this single decision (the other 50% being too clueless to know what's about to happen). You want to force updates to the windows operating system, that's one thing, but forcing updates to 3rd party hardware, you can go frak yourself. I'm cancelling my 'free' update for this reason - I knew there would be a catch somewhere.

Perhaps third party vendors (nvidia for one)  could add something so as to not update automatically from M$ by simply checking a box.  Just a thought.

I am not thrilled with the issue.  I may most likely join you on this one.  I don't like to be forced to update everything.  Over time, I usually do...but I got burned once by Windows 8.1, when the Windows update no longer let me boot into Windows.  A security update that Microsoft later rescinded...but the damage was done.  This is just asking for trouble.

Never cared about updates and ads shoved down my throat with a shovel, MS must be leaning a few bad treats from Google.

If Win10 doesn't give you the option for this auto-updates, I'll be sticking to Win7 till MS dummies give me that option. Last time I checked I live in a free state "for now's" and Google free.....

As many have stated...it's not the Windows security updates that I worry about.  I posted issues that I had with my laptop and switchable graphics over the past two OS releases.  My laptop is still on Windows 7, thanks to HP and their lousy programmers.  They decided that they would never release new video drivers for any OS other than Windows 7.  In addition...all AMD driver releases via Windows update have always black screened my machine and forced a reinstall.  Windows recovery failed me twice...I primarily blame HP for crippling my ability to upgrade my Envy 17 to a new OS.  As for my desktop...I have never seen better drivers for my GTX 980 than released directly by Nvidia.  Most times, the drivers offered by Windows update were either partial or OLD.  I will not upgrade to 10 until I am convinced that I have control back.

+1.  Along with a few other things I dislike about Win10.  But that's another subject...

And this is why they should let us do dual boot, so getting it free atm is absolutely not an option.
Stuff gonna be broken so it's not worth sacrificing win7u to the gods.

Don't care if they're solid drivers or not, not the same driver works for everyone else. Not being able to shut off auto-updats and me not choosing what's installed on my systems is a deal breaker. Ought to ask MS to do a survey on how many are truly happy with Android!

Even just NVIDIA video drivers.  How many on this board are using "How many" different versions of the drivers?  Some have issues with one version vs. another...vs another.  It's not that easy to do a blanket upgrade for everyone without hurting a percentage of the user population.  3rd party drivers need to be at the choice of the user...not Microsoft.   When did they become "big brother?"

I have read enough. The old saying, "If it ain't broke..." I very, very rarely have had any problems with Windows 7 and when I do,it's usually something I fudged up. Auto updates while I'm trying to watch a stream with my limited bandwidth, installing whatever and uninstalling whatever big brother wants, no thanks. I thought I was paranoid but the more I hear, I am starting to understand why this whole thing is "free", it will only cost you your soul.
5 more years, and then I will worry.

I am most likely going to hold off upgrading for a while.  Most likely will cancel the upgrade on my HP Envy laptop.  All my business work is saved on that machine and if Windows update borks the machine...I am in big trouble.  Always back my machine up with Acronis...so should something happen...I can restore to the last backup.

I've had several computers at work I have had to fix, with customers having windows automatic updates enabled (windows 7), and the customers having such HP and dell units that specific updates screw up their GPU drivers and BSOD the unit every 5 minutes, and now MS is forcing this sort of crap on people.
I guess I am going to be getting a lot of over time fixing the same issues.

And I guess I should say it..... even apple allow you to choose when and which updates to do... sad.

I can only imagine when some business machines go down because of Automatic updates.  I can see legal issues against Microsoft's brainiac idea if money gets lost over machines not working.

I just dropped the author of the article a note and asked him to check into the legality of responsibility if a business machine goes down and causes a business to not function properly over a "pushed" 3rd party windows update.  If he gets back to me...I will follow up

They just pushed 353.62 tonight, and it fixed the weird flickering bars I was seeing on the start menu and some Chrome windows. Haven't tested the OC capabilities of them, but they seem to be stable in games, and no major performance drops.

If this is how it is going to stay, I'm just going to update to 10 to claim it then reformat and go back to 7. Need to do a fresh install anyways, been a couple years. Maybe at some point they will change their mind on how they handle updates.

If you have Windows 7 pro, the version you get with the free upgrade is going to be the pro version.

I think Gabe Aul from Microsoft is aware of this but with the Windows Insider version I am using I haven't had Windows Update overwrite my drivers yet. The last set of drivers seem to be complete this time around but the driver previous to this was missing the OpenCL functionality.

My insider version keeps asking me for a key. Im like MS you gave me this key, why give me a blocked key you dunce.

Well not an insider version I guess, I got it through Dreamspark Academic institution.

From what I have been reading, it just delays the inevitable. You are eventually forced.
