Hey all,

Quick question. I am thinking about getting either

Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3333MHz C16 Memory Kit - CMD32GX4M4B3333C16

or
the same thing but
Corsair DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 Memory -CMD32GX4M4B3200C16

Is there any reason i should not get the 3333 stuff and just bring it down to 3200 to be safe? or is there any chance I will make my life harder? This will be going into an EVGA x99-FTW-K

Thanks!

Stick with the 3200 since it will keep the BCLK at 100.  If you move the BCLK, the gates of hell will commence upon you.  I think that's a fair warning. lol

Definitely a fair warning. Anything that messes with the BCLK should be destroyed tbh. It causes nothing but issues for everything else in your system. Stick with the 3200mhz like Jack said.

Yeah, for EVGA X99 boards 2133- 2666 MHz RAM uses the 100 MHz BCLK, and for some weird reason 3200 MHz does as well. Everything else will require a higher BCLK which can often cause issues.

Re: Memory question 2016/11/23 10:20:04 (permalink)
Just a quick question regarding this particular subject:
Just say I want to buy 128GB of RAM such as this model of Corsair Vengeance CMK128GX4M8B3200C16
You guys are saying that you want to stick with memory between  2133- 2666 MHz  OR 3200 MHz  PERIOD
Because of the BCLCK? I didn't know that other speeds actually affected the BCLK so I think you guys just saved me from the gates of hell.
Also, is there any model of Corsair that you guys recommend for super high quality? I'm looking for the best of the best at the highest GB I can get.
I just don't want to run into any overclocking or simply INSTALL issues when I put this new rig together.  Thanks for all your help. Cheers!

You might run into issues regardless depending how strong your IMC is on your CPU.  I've seen people have issues with 64/128 GBs of RAM in all slots with higher Mhz.  You should be ok in all honestly but don't think its a guarantee.  The only guarantee you have is based on intel's standard speed, iirc is 2133 or 2400.

OK! Thanks for the killer info!
Sorry to bug, but one last thing.  Say I'm going an i7 6850k CPU, will that be ok for 64/128GB?
I would at least like to put 64GB in the X99 Classified with the 6850, so I'm just trying to buy the best but also the easiest of memory to OC and run.
In the long run, just to reiterate, you're saying to be safe, just buy 2400mhz to make sure that I have an easy time?
Thanks for your great input.  Love this community here.

Re: Memory question 2016/11/23 16:01:21 (permalink)
What he's saying is that some Intel CPUs don't have strong memory controllers that can't take the overclocked memory.

Overclocked memory? Yep. Anything past 2133MHz for the older generation, and 2400MHz for this latest generation is considered overclocked.

So, being overclocking, it's not guaranteed to work. The IMC (integrated memory controller) works harder with more memory. So getting 128GB of memory working at 3200MHz *might* not work, or it might just need more tweaking (more RAM voltage, looser timings, etc.). Conversely, it doesn't have to work as hard with just 64GB of RAM.

Best advice? Buy from a vendor that accepts returns!

Wonderful info. Thanks a lot for that insight.  I think I may just stick around 64GB and 2400mhz just to be safe on all fronts.  If anyone thinks that this is a little rudimentary please let me know.  I'm on my way to a new X99 build and I just don't want to have too many issues like I've had in the past.  Thanks again.

Just out of curiosity any particular reason you need 64GB ram? In my mind 32GB(which is already overkill for most applications - at least for games and general home usage) at higher clock and tighter timings is better then 64GB at lower settings. Just my opinion and I could be wrong, others may know better.

Lots of reasons for myself:
3D modeling and design work
While gaming
Watching a stream
and playing music and having my wife watch videos off the hard drive.
I'm really just playing it ultra safe.  Memory is the key to smooth running machines in my opinion.  It's like 100 bucks more for a lot of extra memory laying around.  I like to alt+tab, A LOT! ;D
