That is a good thought. I'd still like some input from more forum members to see if this would be a good idea.

I think we should fold once a year using Jeffrey's name. 10 mil. each time. That's about how much his rig would have folded in a year.

That would depend if EVGA is willing to keep his account active and also if his family wishes to keep his account open. I'd like to hear back from some more forum members before I make a request to EVGA and his family.

Why not a Memorial Folding day for all the individuals who are no longer folding with us at this time. It would be nice to do something special for Jeff every year, but adding everyone else who has passed on would be a nice gesture also.

    Memorial Idea.... 2012/03/12 10:05:28 (permalink) ☄ Helpful
    My $.02....

Fantastic idea. But... It should be for all that are no longer with us.

We could name names, but would it be only for EVGA fallen? I wonder if that would sit well in the light as it is intended?... Or...

We clearly have a lot of members who like to help. And IMHO a lot of members that can care less about competitions.

Why not have an event. Instead of a Contest. That sets a two week goal for all of the lives lost for any reason? This way we are not failing to remember our fallen, but many Fold or Crunch for very different reasons than most think.

If I was to propose anything...

    • I would run it every April or September (Cooler months for most and thinking of other events already running in March/May etc)
    • Ask EVGA to sponsor the Idea by having a main page announcement (Like now... 6-8 main announcements, have this be one of them) and marketing banners that sit up top on every forum page we go to, the week or so before and during the event. Notice I said nothing about prizes from EVGA. That would be up to them. But using the banners and main page is huge!
    • Clear goal. We all win.
    • Not a "Contest" but an "Event"
    • This event would be for anyone no longer with us from all walks of life. For any reason.
    • Make a thread that allows folks to place why they are/have participated. Their own little stories so to speak.
    • Have prizes "IF" the goal is met.

I like the memorial event. When we sign up we can post who we are folding for.

I'm tank and I'm folding for jeffreyham
I'm tank and I'm folding for all those who last their battle with cancer this past year.

    Etc...

I like AB's idea but I would like to hold the event in March and not because Jeffreyham lost his life this month in his battle against cancer but also because there aren't a lot of holidays or school vacations during March. If there is a consensus for another month that is fine. We can make it an event and if necessary an 'unofficial' EVGA folding event. We can also split it off and make it a memorial crunching and folding day (or week, whatever) so regardless if you are a cruncher or folder or maybe both everyone can have some fun.

I'm in favor of any month where we can take advantage of cooler outside temps for Folding inside.  If we get into the warmer/hot months, then it can put a damper on Folding, especially for using GPUs.  I'm just about there now!  The "memorial event" idea is fine with me.  Keep it simple, easy to communicate and easy to participate.  I sure hope we won't be adding more names to the memorial list, but I really would like to see that list of names saved/shared somewhere so that we can have it as a reference.

    I agree, no prizes.
I think the event would be best for one day and that we fold for a member name like memorial@evga.com.  Keeping the event to a single day will not affect the ability of people with low monthly points from joining the event and getting their evga bucks if that is a concern to them.

I see nothing wrong with folks making a personal choice to fold for one day on their own.

That said, I would think by only doing it for one day may not allow for SMP's and other production WU's to drop in time. Not to mention a goal to make in one day of production would have to be pretty much our normal production number or less.

My thinking, for EVGA (If they even choose to) to advertise and for it to attract the intended attention... One or two weeks of production would be necessary.

Great example... We thought 10 million could be achievable for jeffreyham on just Friday, maybe Saturday. And we might make that late tonight or tomorrow.

Anyway my point is folks have helped and done what they had hoped.

@ codebluetoo ... That does not take away from your thoughts BTW as I see a tremendous value in them. I am just suggesting a larger target/goal for the event requires folks to make their own decisions as to how much if any participation they will offer, and time to unfold...

I see you point AB.  I hadn't thought about the time to prime and for large WU's to complete.  Personally I have no issue with a week or two.  I think this is a great idea.

Instead of a single day, why not a weekend (2-3 days) or even an entire week of folding at 100%. Someone mentioned 2 weeks I think which is also a consideration.

I think such a concept should be for all teams and yet beneficial to no team.

For instance a independent team where any team can express their condolences for fallen folders or family members. Memorial Day would be a perfect day to set aside for such expressions as well as the incident itself. Perhaps a title such as "Folders Memorial" for lack of a better contribution title.

It wouldn't really matter where on the charts this team is located, only that it exist and everyone remembers its purpose. If anyone sees this team climbing the charts they will instantly know there was a loss.

Memorial Day in 2012 is on Monday, the 28th of May. Only two months away which gives plenty of time to decide, whether to start such a memorial.

I think it's a great idea. We could come up with one folding name to switch to, and watch the event contribution grow from year to year. I agree with the No Prizes idea as a memorial is non-profit IMO.
It would be neat to see what input was available across the folding world. We could set it up as it's own Team and track individual Teams contributions (if wanted) through differing passkeys for each Team participating.

Making a new Team for this would be a good idea, so that it is not just tied with EVGA alone, but instead everyone wishing condolences to those who are no longer with us.

As for a team name, how about "The Fallen". Kind of stealing it from the Transformers yea but I'm changing a little of what AfterBurner already mentioned.

The only prizes (If any) should be badges of honor or something like that. There's no need for material possessions when were all doing this out of love for those who are in a better place now.

This is from forum member mofakkadan:

I talked to Mrs Hamilton this afternoon and she said to tell you "Thank you so much for sending the flowers" She said to convey to all the members who were folding in his honor that she thinks it is absolutely wonderful and thinks an annual day of folding for Jeffrey as well as all the fallen members  is a  great thing. By all means do it. It's for a great cause. I snipped the 10,000,000 point certificate and e mailed it to her. On behalf of the Hamilton family and Jeffrey's friends here in Missouri, thanks to everyone leaving condolences on the obituary site and for all the kind words on the EVGA forum.  And to all the folders participating Friday a special thanks from Mrs. Hamilton.
He is gone but will never be forgotten with all the friends on the EVGA forums.
    Thanks again, Dan
