All settings changed as suggested...

Defaults in NVCP were different for the following: AA Transparency=OFF, Pre-Render Frames=3, Multi-Display=Multi-Display

Things are smoother now... thx
I tried just pre-render and it was also better, so my guess is this one...same issue as BFBC2

Glad its running better

I expect all of this to be temporary until the next Nvidia driver and after the first serious patch.

EA/DICE was doing a "reporting cycle" today, where ORIGIN was sending gameplay data.
Lets hope they do something good with it

thanks for the settings maniac, but for the drivers i stick with the beta because it gives my card more fps and much smoother play.

Yeah.. I did test each set (I liked the BETA's too) but I could not test any difference with my Dual 580's and 285.62 at least for my config gave the best results (about 15fps higher with high FXAA)...

Whatever works best, is what you should use... just trying to give users some ideas to try

The setttings are marvelous, but I experience the game locking/freezing even though I have well over 50fps.
I checked my Event View and there is an application error for bf3.exe closing unexpectedly. Sometimes I have to reboot or alt+ctrl+del to close BF3.
When I play in Windowed Mode the game does not crash...

I actually took off the Adaptive setting and changed it to performance, which has made the game run smoother without crashes. Also, I read from another thread that changing your systems Power Plan to High performance would help? I'll have to do some more testing to see if the game is stable with the settings in this thread + the Power Plan option.

Thanks Maniac....been playing for the last 2 hours with your settings in the NVCP and everything is running much smoother now.
Unchecking Raw Mouse Input seems to help as well.

Tried Hyperthreading both on and off and could not see any difference.

Had some weired green flashing bands across the screen on one map. Other than that....pretty good.

Where can I see my VRAM usage?

use Afterburner or Precision's OSD and check GPU Memory for each card to be displayed.

*if you followed the "exact settings" I posted, VRAM is nominal at appox 1230mb loading/875mb running.

"Auto detect" works quite well for 580 vanilla's in SLI..
-->gives ULTRA/High and 1400mb running VRAM with "Post Processing AA" at x2

I've read that at 1920x1200 or higher, a 3GB GTX-580 will actually use over 2GB of VRAM... any comment on this?

I am looking at possibly updating to the 580 and was thinking since I do play at that resolution, the 3GB card would be worth the few extra bucks...  specifically for BF3 of course.

I would NOT buy any 580 card that does not have 3gigs of Vram -period-
The screen res your using does not matter... get the 3gig model.

Yep, anything over 1920x1080 will push over 1.5g of VRAM easy

Thanks, I've only read a few comments on the 3GB cards for BF3 but the one that really struck me was from another member here on the forum who said during Beta his 3GB card was averaging between 2.2-2.4GB of VRAM playing on Ultra @ 1920x1200.

I was going to just get the Classified model, since it's only $10- more but that would mean new PSU and that brings the total $ way up... I can run a pair of the regular 3GB 580's with my current PSU saving me another few hundred dollars.

Thanks for the info.

Re:MANIAC's BF3 -temporary- Quick Guide for users having issues 2011/10/31 06:03:23 (permalink)
anyone else have any ideas? im so confused..

i used Maniacs suggested settings, used windowed mode, and monitored MSI Afterburner (turned card fan up to 70% to give additional cooling) and it worked the first time after changing it all for 30 minutes before i had to leave.

i come back and bam. cant play longer than 2 - 8 minutes. same "battlefield 3 has stopped working". my rig is the same as my buddy because i built them both. he can play his with NO problems at all except for weird artifacts once in a while AND he can play it on ultra.
so what the hell? what is the difference between mine n his.. and why did mine "get fixed" for 30 minutes after making Maniacs suggested changes and than it revert again..

video card can play crysis 2 still on ultra.
card is about 45 days old and gone thru 40 hrs of gameplay between BFBC2 and crysis 2.

Yes it was multiplayer. I didnt even think to try out SP and see..

We didnt like the quality of the voice in the game so we just use team speak.
i dislike my ht omega sound card so i have just been using onboard REALTEK audio for now.

Have you removed the HT sound card, and reinstalled the MB audio drivers?

In the browser you are using... can you "see" the pings for the servers you are playing on?
Do you use a TS3 server or is one of you hosting the server?

Re:MANIAC's BF3 -temporary- Quick Guide for users having issues 2011/10/31 08:01:35 (permalink)
well i had problems with the ht omega (it wouldnt recognize certain speakers and i think the software was not so great) so i had removed it.
i reinstalled the realtek audio on board audio drivers and have been using the on board audio for some time (sorry if i was confusing).
i use a Logitech head set that plugs into the usb that has ear piece and mic.

On team speak, i dont host. we just find a random channel, ask if they mind if i create a sub-channel, and then me and my buddy go there and talk while gaming.

im thinking when i go home of:
playing single player (see if it crashes)
playing MP but no team speak or anything else. i usualy ALWAYS play with my friend.

any other suggestions?
thanks again everyone and especially Maniac for all the help.

it IS odd since you brought it up.. that i played the 30 minutes after your suggestions withOUT him on TS. and than he got on TS and i tried to play several times and thats when the trouble started again...

Disabling HBAO will really help with the FPS instabilty...
Also running a I7 920 at 2.6 (stock) is crimping your videocard with a bottleneck. I suggest getting your I7 920 up to at least 3.6ghz for improved FPS performance

unisntalled realtek hd drivers, reinstalled fresh download from asus website for my mobo.

double checked all settings.. not on TS.. crashed after a few minutes @ stock 900 mhz
turned down to 820 mhz like some other forums said and same thing.
i just dont understand what allowed me to play for 30 minutes the other day.
and what is letting my buddy with same set up have no problems and i cant play more than 5 min...  ive even brought his rig over and looked at everything side by side.
