I went with a Plextor M6E M.2 just the 128Gb one as it's just a boot drive, I use 4 other SSD for storage etc.

Drive works fine, and seems a little faster that the Sata connected ones.

Thanks, just out of curiosity, are you running windows 7 or 8.1? Would you mind running a couple of benches? Mainly crystalmark and as-ssd to it?

Nice reads, writes are low. What about the 4k? Thanks for that, I am in the market for buying one too :)

I have this drive, the 256GB version, and the x99 Classy board. Seems that something is going on with it that causes system hangs and eventually BSOD.

Did you do anything to prepare the drive for Windows or anything?

No prep, in fact all I did was copy a windows backup onto the drive, not a fresh install, and the backup was from my Asus X79 setup.

Might not be the drive thats causing your problem.

Currently there is limited support for M.2 as a boot drive on the x99 boards, and most will not work. They should work fine as a storage drive though. Unfortunately we don't have a list of m.2 drives that work as a boot drive at the moment, however they are working on that issue and there will be a future BIOS update that addresses it and adds support for booting from m.2.

Plextor M6E M.2  works fine as a Boot drive in PCi mode.
Perhaps other X99 owners can add any Brands models of M.2 that work.
There is little point in running these drives in Sata mode as it defeats the purpose of giving more bandwidth.

The Samsung XP941 512gb works in the ASUS Rampage 5 Extreme as a boot drive.  It does take some fiddling to install windows on it, but if you follow the instructions that are posted in various places in the ASUS forums and online at like Ram City, you should be fine.

I believe that the Plextor will boot as well on a RVE.

    Edit: progress.

I'm trying to set my Samsung XP941 as a boot drive.

Once I set the boot to UEFI, I was able to install Win7 onto the XP941 seemingly smoothly, but when it completes the first round of installation, it reboots to update and goes directly into the BIOS, or tries restart the installation from the DVD.

Is the boot order in the BIOS setup properly?  You'll need to have the OS drive on top of the list.

I double checked and it was at the top. I currently installed Win7 to a different SATA SSD, so maybe a BIOS update will fix it?
