I've been getting an error where performance will suddenly drop off and Windows will ask me to change my settings to Windows 7 Basic to absolve the issue. And it does. After changing from Aero to Basic my performance goes right back up. The card is new and stock, no additional overclocking has been done. I'm up to date on my drivers and have cleaned them out and reinstalled them with no change. I'm also using a dual monitor extended display, if that matters. I had a GTX 660 prior to upgrading and never had this issue. Any ideas?

My current build is,

EVGA GTX 1070 FTW
MSI Z170A Gaming M5 Motherboard
i7 6700K @ 4.0GHz
16.0GB Single-Channel 2400MHz Ram
Windows 7 Professional
EVGA NEX650G Power Supply

Try with just one monitor to see if the issue is with running two monitors.

I haven't read much about it, but there is a fix somewhere - someone else will have to point it out as I do not know where to look.

Is that the error you're talking about? To fix the problem goto (using bf3 as an example) C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 3 and right click on BF3.exe, select properties, select compatibility tab, check mark disable desktop composition, press ok. Error shouldn't pop up anymore. You can also do this with other games/apps that give you the same message.

That is the error that I get, Sajin. But I'm also getting it on my desktop while I'm not running any games. Though it could set after I close the game I suppose?

Do the following to disable it on the desktop...

    • Click on Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System
    • Click on the "Advanced system settings"
    • In the System Properties window, go to the Advanced tab and click on the Settings button (Performance section)
    • Uncheck "Enable desktop composition"

Well after using the second option provided on that forum the option to uncheck the 'enable desktop composition' option showed up in the advanced system options. Either way I've disabled it in both places. I will see how it goes and let you all know. Thanks for the feedback.

16gig memory.. so, followed your instructions '' C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 3 and right click on BF3.exe, select properties, select compatibility tab, check mark disable desktop composition, press ok '' but the check marks are grayed out , can't select them...

Try re-enabling the service you disabled then see if you can check mark the box.

Well all seems to be well. While I haven't turned the settings off in any individual game's files changing it in the system settings seems to have straightened it out.
