I see the classy has 2 different m.2. Slots, an e and a m. What is the difference? Are the m.2 slots pcie gen 2 or gen 3? Are the m.2 slots bootable, ie put an os on one and boot. I've read up on some m.2. ssd drives and the samsung xp941 is x4 pci express. Are the m.2. Slots on these boards 4x pci compatible? I guess an asrock board is the only one i could find that would confirm this; it is bootable and gen 3 pcie x4.

Question 2...I know all 3 of the new cpus will destroy my overclocked 920 (3.6 ghz) but which one is the best for my uses? I primarily game but would love to get into live streaming which is cpu heavy. I currently game at 1080 but will be moving to 4k or possibly the new 21:9 curved 1440p. So 8 core is tempting but i dont think i would take enough advantage, so which of the lower 2 cpus? Leaning toward 5930x because of extra pci lanes.

Let me know what you all think. So anxious to build a new rig. Would like to stay evga (evga x58 matx, evga 780, evga 1300 watt psu) but i hear asus has some great mother boards too. Thoughts?

Update: found this m.2 key layout
Key
ID Notched
pins Provided interfaces
A 8–15 PCIe ×2, USB 2.0, I2C and DP ×4
B 12–19 PCIe ×2, SATA, USB 2.0 and 3.0, Audio, PCM, IUM, SSIC and I2C
C 16–23 Reserved for future use
D 20–27 Reserved for future use
E 24–31 PCIe ×2, USB 2.0, I2C, SDIO, UART and PCM
F 28–35 Future Memory Interface (FMI)
G 39–46 Generic (not used in M.2 specification)
H 43–50 Reserved for future use
J 47–54 Reserved for future use
K 51–58 Reserved for future use
L 55–62 Reserved for future use
M 59–66 PCIe ×4 and SATA

So make sure you are looking to make sure the m.2 slot has slot m to maximize your speed. And try to confirm if its gen 3 and whether or not the slot is bootable. Come on evga hope you got this right...

Before you make the decision, which it seems like you are simply looking for someone to justify you purchasing the 5930k,look at your graphics card. Are you running SLI? Are you planning to run SLI? Are you looking for 2 or 3 cards?

The 5820k will be perfect fine for one card. The 5930k is going to give better performance with 2 or 3 cards. If you plan to use multiple cards, spend the extra money now so that you aren't trying to sell the cheaper processor at a lower price than purchased so you can spend more down the line.

Basically, make up your own mind and stick with it because it is an expensive investment.

I know what processor I want. I was more hoping I could get some answers about the m2 port. is it a bootable port?? Is it a generation 3 x4?

Most of us are still enjoying the X58 as the old 45nm i7's have been replaced with 32nm 6 core Xeons as I have mine running 4.2Ghz without turbo and it can keep up with current stuff in gaming..

The Key M M.2 port shares the signal distribution with PCIE5, which is Gen 2 x4. So the port would run at gen 2 x4 speeds. It is bootable.

Do you want SATA Express support. EVGA competitors all have x99 motherboards with SATA Express support. While evga doesn't support it at all.  If you plan on keeping the next system like you did X58, SATA Express support might come in handle 2-3 years down the road.

I wanted evga to put all other boards to shame... But it feels like Asus has done it again. They have so many more features for the same price... Sigh. And from the few sites I've seen other boards are over clocking just as well

Why worry about sata express` 10x speed when you can get 30x speed using m.2 (Samsung Xp941)

$750!!!! The closest competitior that I see is less than half of that....

*edit* Just found one plextor for $416, so over half, but that is crazy.

    Wheredo you see 750? Newegg had all 3 @ 500 512gb, 289 256 gb, and 140 128gb.

hey, good to see this - i've been doing tons of digging trying to find out exactly how an m.2 ssd will work on my x99 i7-5930

    few things to check into...
    • afaik, all m.2 ssd's are still m.2 generation 2...meaning that 20gb/s is max speed
    • the 32gb/s will only be possible when m.2 generation 3 comes out, e.g. samsung's 3d nand on an m.2 chip
    • all the new mobo's i've seen have been m.2 pcie interfaces, and sata ssd's are not compatible - you need to check with mobo manufacturer for inter-compatibility
    • any m.2 interface (on the board or by using the add-on pcie board) can use up to x4 of your pcie lanes
    • if your m.2 ssd is b+m keyed, your max speed is capped at 10gb/s (sata express speed), but it is compatible
    • your m.2 ssd's max speed will be limited if you aren't using a pcie 3.0 lane or the interface built into the board (performance basically halves as you drop a generation)
    • your m.2 ssd's max speed will be limited by how many pcie lanes you afford it, up to x4 (performance basically halves as lanes halve)

thus, if all that i've discovered above is true... you'll need a pcie-compatible m.2 (gen. 2) with an m key plugged either directly into mobo or through the add-in card...and you'll have to use (or have available for in the former case) a pcie 3.0 x4 for a max speed of 20gb/s -- and it is bootable

any deviance from this course will lower your speed, e.g. b + m key m.2, pcie 2.0, less available lanes, etc..to 10gb/s or less (which essentially means why not go sata express?)

you should also carefully check which m.2 ssd's have been validated, such as the samsung xp941 (m key) and plextor m6e (m key)...for two reasons: 1. form factor (e.g. m.2 2280) to see if it will fit the interface or add-on board, and 2. ssd controller (e.g. marvell 9183, etc) to see if the mobo will allow it as a boot drive

please let me know if you find any conflicting information - i still have my own worries about this...and there's really very little definitive information and lots of conflicting sources

    hope this helps!
