[Background info]
My Moto G is about a year old. Prior to it I had some sort of cheap Samsung Android from a few years ago that was low end even then. My Moto G is up to date, but I find it very frustrating to use often. Often it feels sluggish, the battery doesn't last very well. After 8 hours in Chicago using the GPS intermittently and an auto dimming backlight app, I was down to 13% on the train ride back. The camera is iffy at best. It is capable of taking decent pictures but not what I would call "Good". The screen is also shattered from a fall on a tile floor from about 3 feet.
Even playing around on some of my friend's phones I'm not really a fan of Android anymore. Initially I liked it for the complexity, that I could customize everything and it was so easy to tinker with. More and more as I get older (Now 21, YAY!!), I find I don't really have time to fiddle with it and I spend less time on it, and often it would be great to have a GOOD voice control on it as oftentimes I'm driving while playing music from it, and it would be nice to just say "next" or whatever than have to look at it when I have time at a stoplight.
[end background info]

Right now pretty much the only phone I'm thinking about is the iPhone 6. My girlfriend has a 5C and while staying with her over winter break I used it numerous times, and it is lightning fast. Switching between apps is just sweet. The camera takes very nice pictures on it, and the messaging works really well. Additionally I can still get Google apps for things like maps and email, and if I need Android I have a 7" Kindle Fire HD that is rooted and loaded with Cyanogenmod.

To make it really simple...
Reasons I like the iPhone 6:
Lightning fast, good battery life, awesome camera, fast messaging, iMessenger, the screen, the overall size, various accessories and cases, etc.
I'm unsure because I haven't had an iPhone personally before. First I had a blackberry, then 2 Android phones up to my current Moto G. I'm also concerned about buying a $750 (64GB) phone and having it be outdated in a year or so.

I don't think I would really like a huge phone, 5"+. This is why I'm not looking at a Note 4, LG G3, or iPhone 6Plus. I already have a tablet that I use for school, and have no need for a massive phone. The 6 is pretty much my ideal size, but I don't want to get tunnel vision and do something stupid. I have Tmobile by the way. Any input is appreciated.

My wife went from a Note II to a iPhone 6. It was a downgrade, the camera was not that great, the battery life was worse than her Note II, the screen was hardly better and the phone without a case will slip right out of your hands in no time and the OS had very little to offer. She returned it and waited for the Note 4.

At the very least, i'd check into a Samsung Galaxy S5, they are not as uncomfortable as you would think. I have a Note 4 and couldn't be happier, the camera is by far the best camera I've used on a phone. The screen is so clean at 1440p, the battery last for a VERY long time. It charges so fast, it's ridiculous... They are not kidding about a 50% charge in 30 minutes. It also last a long time, I've had many weekends my phone had not been charged for 3 days straight before I needed to toss it on the charger. Once it gets under 20% battery life, it gets super conservative and lasts a really long time. I've had many co-workers talk about how giant my phone was and how impractical it was for them when I had a Note 3. Now, pretty much all of them are running Note 4's. It's just a far more convenient phone, the features are unmatched by any other. Man... i'm telling you... You won't regret getting a one. I highly suggest it.

I have a Galaxy S4 and LOVE it.  My dad has the S5 and it is great; he has gotten it wet many times and it still works perfectly.  You can't go wrong with one of the Galaxy phones.  I will never buy another Apple phone, hated the OS and Apple is very closed minded, only what they approve.  Android is so open I love it.

iPhone 6...  You won't be disappointed...  I wasn't even aware there were other phones on the market.  I have seen folks lately putting huge tablets up to their heads. I guess those are the other phones?

What does he not like about the S4?  The only thing for me that is lacking is it's speaker.

I would RMA that then, sounds faulty.  Mine has never frozen up or restarted In the 22 months I've had mine.

The speakers of the HTC One M8 is what I'm jealous of.  If you could combine the speakers of HTC and the Super AM-OLED screen (screen is just gorgeous) made by Samsung, you would have my dream phone.

I'm currently on the HTC One Max, It's a good phone, Unfortunately the antenna doesn't seem to be as good as the Samsung Note series.... I always lose signal in my building, always have that problem.. Other than that a great phone.

I'm waiting for the LG G4 to come out so I can upgrade to that one, If you're patient enough, I'd suggest looking into it... But then again, Phablets aren't for everyone.

Re: Looking for suggestions/thoughts on a new phone 2015/01/08 10:19:42 (permalink)
I think this is a decent list that covers most of the good high end phones that I'd look at...

In order from most interesting to least.
Apple iPhone 6 64GB - top choice for suite of features, speed and size, camera is supposed to be excellent and from my testing in the store it was awesome
Galaxy S5 - second place, this is really the biggest I would be okay with having, camera as well is supposed to be good
Galaxy Note 4 - Too big but I like the features/camera
Nexus 6 - Again too big but good features and
LG G3 - Too big and the Note 4 looks better IMO
HTC One M8 - Nice, good construction and quality, speakers are quite good

My biggest conflict is I'm really unsure at this point if I want to stick with Android, I haven't been thrilled with it lately. It's hard to put my finger on exactly but I don't find it that easy to use anymore especially once all of my apps and such are on it. My music is mostly lossless from CD's so I'm not worried about having to put it on iTunes really. Speakers aren't a huge deal to me either as I hardly ever use them, generally I use headphones. (Denon D2000, Sennheiser HD 598, or Klipsch Image S4i's.) If I were to go with the IP6, I would obviously get a Lifeproof case as well.

I really like the size of the iPhone 6, that and really the simplicity if I'm honest. I'm constantly on the go as a full time student with a part time job, and such. Even if the camera isn't amazing that's alright as I plan to get a DSLR at some point soon regardless, but it would be really nice to have a decent camera on the phone.

Re: Looking for suggestions/thoughts on a new phone 2015/01/08 11:10:07 (permalink)
They also upgraded the headphone jack on the Note 4. The signal is very clean. I'll have to say... The interface refresh from the Note 3 to the Note 4 was pretty nice. It definitely improves the experience on Android.

The G3 is actually the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S5, the problem is... It's running a 1440p screen and the GPU is just barely a step up from what supports a 1080p display. Also, the drivers for the display are pretty horrible from what I've seen, nowhere near as clean as the Note 4 display.

The Nexus 6 has a curved back, I messed around with it at the store and it's honestly too large and that curved back would drive me crazy since I like to use my phone on flat surfaces a lot. Motorola made the phone as well. I don't know what it is with Motorola and phone camera's, they just can't seem to get something decent out. Their auto focus is horrible and they add a weird yellow tint to all of their pictures.

HTC M8 is an excellent phone, but at this time... It's so late into their release and with the M9 showing up in CES 2015, i'd definitely wait for that.

Actually... At CES 2015, they also released a few new Asus phones, the Asus ZenFone 2 and Asus ZenFone Zoom with a upgraded camera. You may want to check into those as well and see if they are supported on your carrier.

Not trying to hi jack the thread but I am looking for a new att phone too. I won't touch an I-phone. I hate everything apple and I really don't care for windows based phones. I actually like bigger phones for the larger screen and I don't loose them as easy.  We currently have the HTC one vx and it is really an awesome phone but they are starting to show their age and loosing battery charge quicker. The biggest factor is price. Att site shows all kinds of prices and we usually do a 2 year contract ANyone have suggestions for a good place to shop and a decent cheaper phone?

LG G3. I swore I would never own another LG phone. In December my carrier offered me the phone for free with a 2 year contract and a free case, and on my same cheapo plan. Great phone. I had the S4 as a work phone and that too was excellent.

I wish I could just do like a trial of each phone for a day. :( Tough decisions.. I've never been huge on Apple but the 6 has definitely caught my interest.

LG G3. I swore I would never own another LG phone. In December my carrier offered me the phone for free with a 2 year contract and a free case, and on my same cheapo plan. Great phone. I had the S4 as a work phone and that too was excellent.

Amazon has the LG G3 for 0.01$ with a 2 year contract. It looks like a slightly bigger screen with higher resolution than the Galaxy S5 , same processor and the LG G3 has 3 gigs of ram but the s5 seems to be more popular and it is $79 with a 2 year contract. What gives? I like the idea of a bigger screen because I have fat sausage thumbs.  Looks like a good phone. Thanks for the input.

The G3 runs the snapdragon 801 chipset over the S5's 800 chipset. It also has a 1440p screen over the S5's 1080p. The main difference is the stock enterface. I believe the G3 also has wireless charging on the latest models.

Wireless charging... that's cool! I wonder if trying to push games and apps on that high of a resolution drags things down though... It amazes me that we have 5 inch displays with that high of a resolution but we can't get a reasonably priced 4k projector yet. Oh well. That g3 looks like a very solid phone. Going to read some more reviews and hopefully pull the trigger on it soon.

I don't game much on the G3 but when I do it seems to run butter smooth. I just fear breaking the glass on the new phones.....so big they break easier I hear. I have a good case though.

Yep, bigger phones definitely need a good case.

I have a Moto X and love it. Its the only phone I have left stock since it just works. Battery lasts a day and a half with moderate to heavy usage, about 3 days with light usage. Its always been quick but yes the camera sucks. Id say its a good choice for people who dont want a huge phone.

note 4.  only had it a month or so, but I still feel unworthy just being around it.

I am going with the LG G3. My sister has the S5 and it is pretty darn nice. I really like the 30 minutes underwater part but mostly for my wife but the LG G3 just has a few features and specs that are better. The wireless charging seems almost like more of a pain especially with At&t but maybe I will go that route down the line. I have a buddy with the note 4 and while it's pretty cool, I hate using a stylus and the "touchwiz" interface just wasn't my cup of tea.
