First time I've lapped a processor, but it doesn't seem hard

Using dampened sandpaper taped to a flat surface (mirror).

Starting CPU

Thermal paste removed

I put Styrofoam pad on the back with duct tape on sides to hold it

Few strokes in to the first layer with 400 grit sandpaper. You can already see the high point in the middle. This is what I am trying to remove in this process.

Down to the bare copper

After 600 grit

1500 grit

2000 grit

Didn't manage to bend a single pin.
Haven't tested the change in temps yet. I'm currently waiting for my new 970 to arrive tomorrow, but I hope to get this to 5GHz from 4.8GHz

You did just Void your Warranty.
I Polished some more, until you do not see the scratch lines.

    What were your Temperatures Before?
    And now After?

Warranties were made to be broken... I agree with bcavnaugh. Definitely could use a little more work until the scratches are gone.

Not necessary to have a mirror finish.  Just make sure you lap the heatsink that is going on it.  Having the 2 surfaces flat will be better.

BTW, mirrors aren't the best choice for lapping.  It may flex a bit.  Your best option is a granite surface plate.  Here is the cheapest one I found @ grizzly:

If you don't do it often then I would just stick with glass.  Although you could spend the few bucks and use it for lifetime of CPU/heatsink lapping.  Plus who knows what else over your lifetime you will have to lap.
