I am at wits end and very sad. I'm an experienced builder but have hit a wall here.

I have my CPU (Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor) installed and seated properly. The cooler is mounted and not too tightly screwed on. I'm in pure 'troubleshooting' mode where I have the MoBo out of the case with only the 24 pin power and ATX power connected along with 2 8M DIMMs (G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory).

When I connect to power, the LEDs go on, the fan on the cooler spins, and LED code lights up. It then settles on 55, which maps to "No memory installed".

I've tried each DIMM in each memory slot, each time with the same error. I've hit the 'reset' button on the MoBo between each set. I've disconnected all system fans from the mobo. I've removed the CPU cooler from the CPU and lifted the chip out; it's in perfect condition as is the seat it sits in. Clean, nothing bent, missing or misshapen. I've loosened the screws attaching the cooler to the MoBo to just finger tightened.

Each time I get a start and then a 55 code.

I refuse to believe the board is bad -- that just seems like a crazy corner case.

What else can it be? Please help me.

Hello and Welcome to the Forums!

Do you have any other Memory to try in your PC system or another system to try your memory in?

No. Brand new system and the first I've had that supports DDR4.
I'd be VERY surprised if both brand new sticks were bad. I mean that would be very weird, right?

What is the brand and model of the memory you are using?

Ah I apologize. It looks like that memory is on our memory compatibility list so that more than likely isn't the issue. I would suggest to call our customer support at 888-881-3842 to see if they can help by troubleshooting with you further.

Cheers. Yep. I ensured all my parts were explicitly compatible.

I'm based in the UK. Do you have a local number I can call please?

Welcome to the forums..I'm thinkin' BIOS needs updated..If you look in the Download Center for BIOS updates, there's maybe about 4 or so updates that improve memory compatibility (among other things) for your board..The board may have shipped with an older/original BIOS..If that's the case (guessing yes), EVGA should send you an updated BIOS chip you can replace..Here is the Contact EVGA info.

* Cooler Master NV-334 * ASUS P8Z77-V LE PLUS * Intel i7-2600K @ 5.0GHz * Corsair H80 * Seasonic M12II 750W * 4x4GB 2133MHz Patriot Viper Xtreme * EVGA GTX 760 SC * 2 x WD 500GB Caviar Black RAID 0 * Toshiba DT01ACA 500GB * Dual-boot Win7 Home Premium 64-bit/Win10 Home 64-bit *

Thanks, Bob. That's very good info.

However, I don't know how I can update the BIOS when I can't get past the 55 screen. Will I be able to boot to a BIOS with no memory or with that error?

Sure thing.

You can't update it since it wont POST..The BIOS chip is replaceable in your board..Look in the manual for it's location..It's in a clamshell you need to pop open to carefully pull it out and carefully install another one..If you have access to another Z170, it's possible you can swap out the BIOS chips and flash yours in another machine within Windows using the update.bat file.

But contact support and see what they say first.

Edit: Added a pic of it.

Yeah, that's what I feared. Or find an older DIMM that IS supported / works and boot w/ that.

Any thoughts on a DIMM that 100% works with this board? I mean my DIMMs are listed on the EVGA as compatible but maybe w/ a bios rev. What DIMMs WILL work? Easier than finding a bios.

Hmmm, I can't say other than what's shown in the CPU and Memory Support page and the BIOS versions shown that goes along with them..Like I said, the BIOS may (probably) need updated for memory compatibility..Maybe try a forum search to see what others are using or maybe another member will chime in on this.

Maybe EVGA will offer to mail me a new BIOS chip like these did for another user with the same problem.

Yes we can do that. Please make sure that your motherboard is registered to your EVGA account then email our EU support and request an updated BIOS chip.
