Greetings all, Im happy to say that im upgrading from a gtx 745 to a new gtx 970 (EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 256-Bit, DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI, DP SLI Ready Graphics Card 04G-P4-2978-KR)and am very excited to receive it next week. My plan is to install it on my own, which brings me to question number one. Any tips or tricks, helpful guides on installing it on my own? Also I have experience buying cards before and had had to upgrade my power supply in the past. Will I need to now? This is what I currently have (http://imgur.com/tmEU8cx) Thanks,Philippe[image]file:///C:/Users/Philippe/Downloads/IMAG1276.jpg[/image][image]file:///C:/Users/Philippe/Downloads/IMAG1276.jpg[/image]

You have a 460w power supply, according to the label and the EVGA page for a 970 shows a requirement for a 500w, so you may run into an issue with that. You can find some really good 600w power supply for decent prices if you look around.
The only suggestion I have, before you install the 970, is to uninstall all geforce drivers, shut down, remove the old card, then install the new card. Once you go to load the new driver, select custom install, and remove geforce experience and all the other garbage.
You should have the driver (which you have to install) and PhysX. If you use the audio through the video card, that could be required also.. I highly suggest letting the on board audio device handle audio and let the graphics card handle graphics, as the Nvidia audio drivers have caused issues in the past... Hence why Nvidia isn't an audio equipment company.
Do not install geforce experience. It is bad... You can optimize your own games in less that a few minutes with superior results and less issues later on.

Hi there phil! I second that what Scarlet said your psu may be struggling to cope with the new card. But it all really depends on the rest of the components you have and the power they draw so consider buying a new psu - it will stand you for quite some time in the long run. As regards the installation don't forget to ground yourself by touching sth made of metal like a radiator for instance as you don't want to damage your sensitive computer parts with static electric shock. And yes uninstall all previous drivers first and get rid of all its traces by using some driver cleaner software. And make sure that your case has a good airflow as gtx970 with aftermarket cooling solution generate a great deal of heat which they dump inside the case so either run your pc with a sidepanel off or better install a couple if intake fans at the front and exhsust fans at the back of your pc case to generate proper airflow.

You are going to run into 3 major issues with this card in a dell computer. 1 has already been mentioned and that is the power supply, you will want something that can put more power out on the 12 volt rails. You basically have only 385 watts to play with for all the 12 volt components in your system. With the 970 you will be pushing the power supply to its limit and making it run hot and strain the components and these dell acbel supplies do not like running close to the limits they print on the side. I can not see what model of dell you have but the second issue will be heat. These systems were never deigned to run with a video card with this much heat output venting out into the case. I assume it only has one fan inside the cane pulling air out and that wont be enough. The other issue is people having issues with higher end video cards and the dell motherboards. For some reason I have personally seen frame hiccups and short freezes based on card like the gtx 970 and the gtx 760 and 770 on xps and inspiron systems even when a proper power supply has been added. These systems were never deisgned to run with any high end gpu, mainly low and mid grade gpus.

oh dear god... Be ready for some issues. Dell and upgrades never go hand to hand. You're better off building an entirely new PC From scratch from all the issues you're about to have. Make sure you have all the drivers, bio's etc and definitely swap out that PSU. You're going to have some major heat issues in those cases as the FTW is an ACX Model.. it pushes the hot air around the case, solely relying on the case and case fans to exhaust the hot air. Inside a Dell case is like being inside an oven.. be ready for crashes and crazy high temps. You would honestly would have been better with the 950 or a 960 (pushing it) than a 970 with power demand and heat. 950 with Dell would have been the better one to go with as it would have been more compatible. I've put a 550 GTX Ti inside a stock HP before for a client against my recommendations. It's still working but at some point the PSU is gonna give.

I have been down a similar path. This is exactly how I got into computers. Years ago, I was robbed at Circuit City and bought a Sony Vaio telling the sales person that I wanted it "fast and future proof" and wanted to play games on it. The guy saw me coming and almost a grand later I had a giant black turd that I couldn't upgrade. I tried in vain to add parts to it and making it faster but I was stuck with what ever Satan, I mean Sony, said I could upgrade only. I would go into forums and ask "why can't I make this computer faster?!?!" and the response was "because it is a Sony." Over the years, I learned and when I finally built my own, I understood. Like a universal epiphany that clicked inside me and now, I am obligated to help others to avoid my misfortune. You are definitely better off than I was, which is good but one thing I can say is, if you are going to do it, do it right. I honestly would recommend against going down the road ahead of you. Dells may not be as bad as far as using proprietary parts but from my experience, you are better off going another route.

So if necessary I'll need to upgrade my mother board, maybe add an extra fan and definitely a power supply and I should be good I hope. Here's some info

good luck finding a motherboard that will fit into a Dell. They make their own motherboards and its a screwy size. I got rid of the dell I had and built my own.

Honestly, you are better off starting over. They have some really good deals on barebones kits at Tigerdirect. That way, at least you have some upgrading options and you are not pigeonholed in hell, I mean, with a Dell.

the space in the dell would be Limited.. so in order to make the 970 really work you're gonna wanna try and get the same size'd PSU because generally Dell's are cramped as hell. You cant upgrade the mobo because its made exclusively by dell. To do so, you need a new case, mobo. If your going that way.. just build a whole new rig. 16GB of Ram is nice but bad thing about dxdiag goes it doesn't tell you what speed. Limiting factor is the fact the dell has limited case fan places.. so you're looking at getting one of the Delta $20+ fan that sounds literally like a jet plane to keep up with the demand for exhausting all the heat the 970 is going to generate inside a small frame. Aside from leaving the side panel off there isn't much you can do. Fitting in a after market PSU into a dell is going to be an entirely another story.

Okay so I got some news you guys might find interesting, I did some research and found a video of a guy installing the exact same card into the, more or less, same computer. Card fits and apparently the PSU keeps up with games like tomb raider and resident evil 6 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hximqfwicQo&feature=youtu.be) plus other experiencing the same results with games such as skyrim. I dont really care about over clocking the thing, I just want to run my games at a smooth FPS setting on high. So that being said I could see me possibly getting a new PSU seeing as others are not having any issues. But getting a new case, and by what some other folks said a new motherboard. I dont know... Im willing to get a new PSU and and I think Ill go with the flow and see what temp my card gets at while playing games, then consider buying an extra fan or something. Going with a whole other case is a whole different story im not sure im willing to follow at this point in time. Heres him installing the card in the xps if interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv98ats_3Hc

You will be perfectly fine upgrading to that card with that Dell. Many others have done the same thing. When users hear OEM they freak and go back to the old days. They have improved by a far margin and use decent parts now.

Just be happy the PSU mounts from the top... I fit an EVGA 750ti SC and EVGA 960 SSC FTW! in my old XPS 8700. I used a Corsair CX750M. Worked out pretty well, eventually i grew tired of the i5-4460 and built my own PC. Good Luck, its not that difficult if you have alot of patience.
